N3-1 THE ALGONQUIN. Flint Arrowhead. These implements were made by the Northeast Woodland tribes. They were excavated on New York's Staten Island, and date from 1500 B.C. to 1000 A.D. Length about 2". Choice

N3-2 THE SENECA. Iron Trade Bead. From the site of a Seneca camp located in Victor, New York. Perforated thick disks with central hole. Diameter 17mm (3/4"), thickness 10mm. Heavy! They date to about 1680. Choice

N3-3 Shoe and Knee Buckle. From an old New England collection. Found at sites in Connecticut and Massachusetts. All dated, ranging from 1660 to 1720's. Choice $25.00
N3-4 Decorated Buckle. Round buckle made of twisted strands of metal. Found in Savannah. $75.00
N3-5 Metal Button with Incised Decoration. Excavated around Richmond, Virginia. Diameters range from 1-1½". Date from the 1750s to the 1770s. Choice $30.00
N3-6 Fork. Two-pronged pewter fork with intact wooden handle. From the Virginia-Maryland border. Belonged to A.B. Hutchins. Total length 6½", handle length 2½". Date about 1750-1780. Still usable! Superb $75.00
N3-7 Rumbler Bell. A type of bell used on horses' harnesses, still seen on holiday decorations! These come from upstate New York and date from about 1780. The ball inside still clatters nicely! Superb $25.00


FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR: FORT FRÉDÉRIC/CROWN POINT. Crown Point is about ten miles north of Fort Ticonderoga on the western shore of Lake Champlain. The area was a trade center between the Indian tribes and the French, Dutch and English settlers. In 1731, the French built Fort Frédéric to guard the area. Despite English and colonial expeditions against it, the fort remained in French hands until 1759. Crown Point was then occupied by Lord Jefrey Amherst, who began construction of a large fort near the old Fort Frédéric. These flints, used to provide the spark for flintlock muskets, date from the French occupation.

AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY ARTIFACTS

FORT TICONDEROGA BATTLE SITE. Fort Ticonderoga, in New York, was captured from the British by Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys in May of 1775. The fort was recaptured by the British in July of 1777 during Burgoyne's march from Canada.

BRANDYWINE CREEK BATTLE SITE. In September 1777, General Howe dislodged George Washington's forces from their position along Brandywine Creek and captured Philadelphia.

SARATOGA BATTLE SITE. The British army under General Burgoyne, which had marched south from Canada, met a strong American force at Saratoga, New York. After prolonged fighting, in which Benedict Arnold took a prominent part on the American side, the British were forced to surrender in October 1777.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA. The city of Charleston withstood attacks by the British in 1776 and 1779, but in 1780 was captured and became the base of military operations in the Carolinas, and remained in British hands until December 1782. In 1781 the British transport ship Wadboo Barony, making for Charleston, was sunk in the river entrance by the Americans; the following items were excavated from the wreck.

THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN. In October 1781, seven thousand British troops under General Lord Cornwallis were besieged by the American forces at Yorktown, Virginia. When hoped-for supplies and reinforcements did not arrive, Cornwallis was forced to surrender, effectively ending the Revolutionary War.

THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH

THE DAILY PICAYUNE, NEW ORLEANS, LA. First published in 1837 and still in operation today, the Picayune was published in English in a predominantly French-speaking city. The masthead pictures a classical theme of the personification of a river: a reclining Greek god holding a jug from which water flows. In the background are two ships, one under sail, the other a steamer.

THE MEXICAN WAR

BUCKLES FROM THE BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA. Fought at Buena Vista, Mexico, between the American army led by Zachary Taylor and the Mexican army of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This war was the testing ground of many young officers who would later be the generals on both sides of the Civil War.

THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

CONFEDERATE BULLETS MANUFACTURED IN ENGLAND. The British Enfield arms works supplied the Southern forces with rifles and ammunition, which had to pass through the Northern blockade to reach the Confederacy. These .58 caliber lead bullets, dating from 1862 to 1865, were unearthed at a number of South Carolina sites.

THE BATTLE OF VICKSBURG. After a long siege and bloody fighting, the Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant's captured the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in July 1863. Thirty thousand prisoners were taken, and the entire Mississippi River was now in Federal hands. The news, coming within days of Gettysburg, proved a great boost to Northern morale.

THE 35-STAR UNITED STATES FLAG. The 35-star flag was flown from July 4, 1863 to July 1865, when Nevada was admitted to the Union.

N3-37 Mounted Fragments from a 35-Star Civil War Flag. The flag from which these fragments were taken was in tatters, but probably originally measured 10 by 16 feet. The stars were handsewn on the blue field. The fragments, with descriptive information and a tinted copy photograph of a Civil War soldier posed with a similar flag, are handsomely mounted in an 8½ by 6½" lucite frame with stand. Choice

About the Collections:

J. Kravic was a collector and scholar who, with George C. Homan, co-authored Collector's Illustrated Guide of the Revolutionary War.He collected in the 1950's at Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga.

Debra Sprouse was a scholar who collected in the 1970s and '80s. She wrote the Guide to Excavated Colonial and Revolutionary War Artifacts, and collected primarily at Brandywine and Yorktown.
