This paper has touched upon a small part of the programming
world, namely COBOL programming with particular emphasis on the
programs written by programmers at a single computer installation.
However, there are additional implications which could be the
focus of further research.
First, are there other COBOL coding rules which can also have
an impact like these twenty rules?
Next, are there similar programming rules in other languages
which can have a similar impact. Can programs written in FOCUS,
ADSO, etc., be likewise shorter, more easily understood, etc.,
if consistent programming guidelines are followed?
Finally, are these same rules applicable to other computer
installations, or have different historical developments influenced
the coding style of programs written there?
