68. HELP!
Tuesday, 27-Feb-01 12:40:46

My toddler is has had recurring pneumonia for 2 years now and we have finally found that he has a severe dog allergy which is causing it. We have a black lab who is an indoor dog, we have had to find another home for her and the allergist wants us to replace all the furniture in the house as well as all carpets and rugs and blow out the vents in the house. My question is: would I have to replace the carpet padding, can I have the furniture cleaned instead of replaced and does insurance usually cover any of the costs?

69. allergic to some dogs but not others?
Sunday 25-Feb-2001 08:30:29

I really need some help here. I am not allergic to dogs per se. I was not allergic to any of the dogs I had including my Siberian Husky who I had for 14 years - big hairy shed tremendously. We are now ready to get another dog a rare Swiss breed called an Entlebucher. They have a very flat coat do not shed very much do not smell and I seem to be extremely allergic to them. Addtionally I seem to be allergic to their saliva. Now I am not normally allergic to dog saliva except for 1 Lab I know (but not others). Can a person be allergic to one breed but not others. Is there any remedy since I am not really allergic to the vast majority of dogs? I'd appreciate any insights out there.

Re: allergic to some dogs but not others?
Sunday 25-Feb-2001 10:56:23

Different people are allergic to different dogs. It has nothing to do with how long the hair is. I am allergic to dogs but was not allergic to a long haired shepard/collie mix that I had for 13 years.

70. Does dander change as puppy gets older
Saturday 24-Feb-2001 11:52:01

Hello I am allergic to some dogs. I had a long haired sheppard/collie mix for 13 years. I never had a problem with him. To all those people asking questions about a hypo-allergenic dog - there is none. Different people are allergic to different dogs. I would like to know if there is any danger of becoming allergic to a dog because its dander changes from puppyhood to adulthood. I know that the human can develop allergies over time. But what I would like to know is: assuming that the human's allergy sensitivity doesn't change is it possible for the human to become allergic to a dog because the dog's dander changes

72. Is my toddler allergic to my dog?
Thursday 15-Feb-2001 22:47:58

I have a 16 month old daughter and we have two chocolate labs. They stay outdoors. The other day one of the labs went up to my daughter and licked her in the face. Well-- she broke out on her face but it went away within 30 minutes. Does this mean she is allergic to them? She has been licked in the face before by another little dog my cousin has and that didn't happen???? Tell me what you think!!!! Thanks! Shelia,Shelia, msr@bbnp.com

Re: Is my toddler allergic to my dog?

From what I understand certain people are allergic to certain dogs' saliva. I would look on the bright side that it's just a red mark as opposed to any sniffle/breathing problems.

74. New Coton de Tulear
Wednesday 14-Feb-2001 11:12:16

I did major research on choosing a dog that would supposedly be great for a family who has allergies (one daughter with very mild asthma other son and daughter with dust allergies hayfever etc.) I just brought home a 10-week old Coton de Tulear which supposedly has no dander and is great for allergies. Well my one daughters is getting sniffily and slightly out of breath. I am so upset. I am going to try "Allerpet". Any insight?

78. Toddler & Puppy
Thursday 8-Feb-2001 16:36:46

We have a 2 year old daughter and have just got a puppy. Unfortunately our daughter's face comes out in itchy red patches whenever she comes into contact with his saliva. We have tried keeping them apart but this is almost impossible. Can anyone suggest a cream or similar which we can put on her face to either prevent the red itchy patches or that we can apply when they start to appear. We keep wiping her face but this just does not seem to work. Any help would be very much appreciated as we dont want her to suffer but want to keep our puppy that she loves very much. Please help. Thanks.

My 9 year old daughter recently developed the same allergy to saliva. We have been treating with liquid Benadryl. Creams do not seem to help. Our dog recently passed away and we are looking for a new breed that perhaps she is not allergic to. So far Shitzu's are the only one. What type of puppy do you have? Any other information you may have on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

79. Meed dog that doesn't shed.
Thursday 1-Feb-2001 01:33:23

I have chronic asthma and had a Maltese for 7yrs that just recently died. :( As long as I washed my dog "Angie" at least once a week I never had any problems. I am wanting to get another dog but someone was telling me the other day that chihuahuas and papillons are good for people with asthma or bad allergies however I have not found any truth in literature about this. Is there anyone that could shed some light on this. Also for those that are interested in Malteses I will tell you this. They are a wonderfull creature. You don't have to keep their hair long if you have bad bad allergies because that just holds the dander in the dogs hair and can cause your allergies to get irritated. Believe me I have quit breathing because a cat got in my car... I have bad allergies. The Maltese rarely bothered me but it did take me some time to get used to her. I would have to wash my hands as soon as I touched her or I would break out in hives but after 2wks my body got used to her. Like anything that effects your body you want to talk to your physician but there are things out there to help you if you really want a dog. Let me know if you learn of anything else. Sorry so long. I only wish that you have good luck. O I can't believe that I forgot to include this. Malteses have excellent health and rarely shed. You have to really take care of their teeth though and some do have problems with diabetes but other than that are wonderful friends.

82. Boston Terrier Asthma Rash and Allergy Shots
Tuesday 30-Jan-2001 22:15:06

I just bought a 15 week old Boston Terrier. I got it because I was told by the store that it didn't shed much (WRONG) - I moved into a condo which housed a few cats and a chocolate lab. I don't know if its the puppy or the cats or the lab but I am hived astmatic and the whole nine. I think the hives are from the puppy - but never had more than a runny nose from other dogs. What can I do - I bought a hepa filter that I move around vacuum about every 3 days wash the pup every week and use a dander control dry shampoo on the pup. Do allergy shots really work and if so how long does it take. Thank you for any help.

Re:Bichon or poodle
Monday 29-Jan-2001 13:51:52

I am extremely allergic to animals dander etc. I have been around most dogs and what I have found in my case that I am more prone to break outs on neck face and eyes if I let the dog lick me or I touch them and then rub my eyes Benedryl helps(of course check with your dr.) I did break out with the bichon we were bringing home from the breeder he had been around other coated animals and had been washed. Some people have reactions to what the animal brings in from outside grass pollin(sp)or playing with other animals. Even my mothers american hairless terrier causes some breakout more because of the saliva than the little dander he produces. I think Trial and Error is the best and make sure your breeder will take back the animal if you show signs of allergies. This is tramatic for you and family but alleregies shouldn't be taken lightly. Sorry so long of message.

83. Is my husband allergic?
Monday 29-Jan-2001 10:19:11

I've recently married about about 10 months ago. At the 6 month timeframe...my husband stated he was allergic to my dog (yellow lab). He complained of horrible headaches. Even though he shows no signs of sneezing weezing coughing or teary and watery eyes...he claims to be having an allergic reaction. The problem...I am faced with finding my pet of six years a new home however I want to be absolutely sure that terrible headaches could be the one and only sympton of an allergic reaction. ,

Re: please help
Sunday 21-Jan-2001 16:00:12

My partner is also allergic and we have found that Yorkshire Terriers (from experience) Maltese American Hairless Terriers Poodles & Bichon Frise are considered hypo-allergenic and hardly ever shed (from literature).Hi am in the process of looking a new puppy we recently lost our 8yo Yorkie to congestive heart failure and do not think that we can handle another Yorkie for fear of trying to "replace" her. My partner is allergic to dogs/cats but never had a prob w/the Yorkie. I have read that the Maltese Brussels Long coated Chihuahua's & Cavalier King Charles Span do not shed excessively and I am curious about your experience with shedding/dander and these dogs. Could you also give me information regarding your prices for females and what types of pups you will have available currently or early to mid February. THanks

Re: Bull Dogs
Sunday 14-Jan-2001 19:40:22

Hi---I am allergic and an asthmatic. My Mother-In-Law has always owned bulldogs and I happen to react badly to her. Don't let the short hair fool you. Every one is different though. It might work out well for yourself. You should go spend time at a breeders house who only has Bulldogs. I went with an Airedale puppy. We have had him for 2 months with decent results. Not to say that I don't have any allergic reactions though. Good luck and do the research.,,

89. Child's Severly Allergic
Tuesday 9-Jan-2001 18:36:47

Does anyone know from experience a particular breed that has coexisted with a severely allergic child? My daughter wants a dog so badly but reacted seriously to the dog test at the allergist. She tolerates Guinea pigs but they don't fetch well! Thanks for your help.

Re: Child's Severly Allergic
Saturday 20-Jan-2001 17:55:18

My grandmother had allergies for years so bad she could not even go outside. She was on several differend medications. She got a chihuahua and was cured. She was never bothered again with allergies and did not have to take her medication any more.

Re: Child's Severly Allergic
Tuesday 13-Feb-2001 10:00:04

Be careful with chihuahuas - I've heard various things about them. I can tell you that I am extremely allergic (went through shots for years react to fish just being cooked etc.). As a kid I loved animals and lived for the day we could have a dog. In fact when they said I had to go through shots and could have whatever I wanted I said "I want a dog!" The allergist suggested poodles and bichon frises. We got a bichon frise and later a poodle/schnauzer mix. I had no allergy problems with either (though the bichon had some behavioral issues). One thing you should definitely do is take your child to a breeder of the type of dog you want or dogsit (if you know someone who has one of these breeds) ahead of time to make sure he/she is allergic to the dander and not the saliva - if it's the latter it makes it much more difficult to have any breed. Good luck!

90. No allergies with American Hairless Terriers
Tuesday 9-Jan-2001 09:36:34

I would mention that I have severe allergies and tried all the suggested breeds. Basenjis cotons poodles even chinese crested or mexican hairless and I could not even come close enough to touch one. The one breed that no one suggested to me and would have saved me months of visiting breeders and allergy attacks is the American Hairless Terrier. I still can't be in the same room as a coated dog yet I happily have three AHTs with no problems. I hope this info helps.

Tuesday 12-Dec-2000 14:45:39

Help please thank you. My brother got a yellow lab about 3 months ago. My nephew 14 years old has been sick with a hacking cough for about a month. The doctor gave him general cold and flu medicine the first 2 visits and last monday december 11th finally gave him an antibiotic. It has been a week and he is still gagging and vommiting mucous and phlegm and has now missed another two days of school. He NEVER misses otherwise. His face appears swollen. Since the antibiotics should be kicking in and he's getting much worse can I assume he's allergic to the dog? And that he CANNOT get better with antibiotics? I have very bad allergies to cats and some dogs. I just purchased a 15wk old boxer pup and I have been getting hives from his saliva and and from his dander when we play around and if have alot of contact with him. I havnt had any other problems except for that. The hives usually subside within 45 minutes or so. Ive put a solution on his coat that is suposed to reduce the dander and it seems to help a little ...but I dont think there is anything you can do for the saliva. No problems with airborn allergies with him around though. Hope this helps...,Roger,cyber_canvas@thevortex.com

Re: Dogs for those with allergies

Labs are a high shedding dog. In my experience they aren't suitable for people with allergies. If you are looking for the lab temperment do some research on Labradoodles. They are a lab / poodle cross that was originally bred to be service dogs that would cause less allergic reactions. Also the soft-coated wheaton terrier has a reputation for being friendly and good with kids without causing allergy problems. There are some available for rescue at www.petfinder.com ,Lori,

My child has had asthma since he was 2yrs old. The also would not dx him until he was 5 or so. He is now 7 yrs old and we have had two dogs (Chow chow's) and a DLH cat in the house since he was born. One of my chow's has recently passed and i wanted another one. I have talked to several people about it and i have had them testify to me about the chihuahua. They have all been on medication for allergies and not even able to go outside in the summer. After they got their chihuahua's they were all fine and dont even have to take medicine any more!! We are currently looking for a chihuahua for my child. You might try it too.

I recently acquired a staff cross bull terrier pup. The pup lives in a insulated dog house outdoors. Everything was all good for the first few days. I then sprayed my dogs house with flea killer and as soon as i came in my house and removed the gloves the top side of my hands were all red. And now i have got an infection on the top of my hands that is spreading i am uncertain if it is the dog or the flea spray- my condition is geeting worser. I have NO other symtoms such as red eyes or runny nose or headaches. I FEEL PERFECTLY NORMAL. I am 16 and i have been begging my parents to get me a dog since i was 11 and i dont want to get rid of it. Am i alergic to the dof or the flea spray?

Maybe you are allergic to those latex gloves. Allergies to laxtex in gloves can be so severe that most doctors offices are going "laytex-free". The flea spray could do it too. If you brake out in hives when the dog licks you though you are probably allergic. See an Allergist. You may have to go to your regular doctor for a referral to an allergist though depending on your parents insurance coverage. Good luck and dont forget to ask God to help you through this situation.,Suzanne,

Re: STAFF x BULL T,Thursday 21-Dec-2000 09:51:42,,I have allergies to latex and it sounds like if the gloves were latex that may be the problem. Red spots/welts on the backs of hands is a fairly common allergic reaction to latex gloves. Hope it isn't your dog. Good luck.

107. Are there dogs whose saliva is less allergenic?
Tuesday 7-Nov-2000 11:58:15

My wife got an allergic reaction after being licked on her neck by a poodle puppy. Any suggestions on how to deal with this other than a)not getting the puppy; b) not being licked? Are there other breeds whose saliva is less likely to cause a reaction?

I am allergic to certain types of dog hair/breeds and saliva. I have found that as far as the saliva goes puppies give me more of a reaction than adult dogs so maybe an adult dog would be better for you than a pup. I don't know if there are certain breeds with low allergen saliva. Individual dogs vary greatly in how much they lick people. I have three dogs and two do not lick at all the third one I have to keep after not to lick me and she has learned what "no lick" means. Bathing the dogs often (once or twice a week) keeps the salavia on the skin/coat of the dog from building up and causing you a reaction. If I don't have time for a full bath I just wipe them off with baby wipes.

I have the exact same problem. If my dog gets a bath every week I'm fine. Plus I visitied a breed of dog a couple of months ago he liked me several times and had no effect. I hope to get one one day but the breed is called a Basenji if you want to research it. It's a really beautiful breed. and small 20-30 lbs.

I am about to get a guide dog. I have the choice of Labrador Retriever Golden Retriever and German Shepard. I would like to know which breed would be better to have in a home with individuals with allergies. Also what form of treatment would you recomend? Please send your replys or advice to me at: countrygirlsrule@hotmail.com I appreciate it. Thank you.

I have heard that Bischons or Poodles work well for people with pet allergies. Does anyone have any information on either of these two breeds?

I have heard that with poodles. They don't produce a dandruff in their fur that most dogs do.

My mother suffers from allergies and asthma...we heard the same thing about poodles but she cannot be around them and has a pretty bad reaction to them...We did borrow a bichon and she didn't have a reaction to her..so we are in the market for one of those...I cannot say they don't cause allergies and from what I was told each person is different but I would think perhaps Bichons are your best bet to try,

111. Dog versus cat allergy
Tuesday 24-Oct-2000 22:52:20

I am on a waiting list to get a cavalier king charles spaniel puppy. It[s the only type of dog I can see myself with;small but not yappy. My problem; I am deathly allergic to cats (asthma & hay fever) but as yet have had no such reaction to dogs. But I[m paranoid that I might invest all this time money and energy in a pup just to have to get rid of it! On the other hand I don[t want to forsake the pleasure of owning a pet for myself and my two daughters for what might just be an insecurity; anyone have comments or advice^

HI- I've also got asthma and allergies severly to cats and to most dogs.. I had the opportunity to be in a car with a cavalier breeder and I did have a terrible reaction in just a couple of minutes.. what i'd suggest is finding a cavalier breeder and spending some time with the dogs to see your reaction maybe even a couple of times. Good luck,,

Just bought 15wk old boxer and I have been getting hives if there is alot of contact with his coat and saliva. I havent had the normal red itchy eyes or stuffy nose like I get around cats or some other dogs though. I have used a solution on his coat to reduce the dander and seems to help ... only a little though. Good luck...
