Capitalization

Capitalization will not have any effect on searching. Also, for data entry, ARGUS sees "chair" and "Chair" as the same term and will automatically enter new data with the same capitalization the term had when it was originally entered into the Lexicon. Users with Lexicon capabilities can subsequently change the intended capitalization in the Lexicon, but it is easier to enter the correct capitalization as new terms are created

Even given batch update utilities, it is safer and easier to select and enforce a capitalization standard than it is to go back in time to fix terms with non-standard capitalization.

Different kinds of terms may need different capitalization, and that's ok. .ANSI/NISO Z39.19 recommends not using any capital letters except where necessary in proper names, e.g. George Washington, Paris, dBASE IV, DNA, Information Systems Corp., NewsBank. When you're deciding whether to go with this, or to use some other convention, consider how your data will look in your reports, and on the internet. Different institutions will have different reasons for why they capitalize the way they do. If you're using a standard authority such as AAT, it's best to retain the conventions they use. The main thing, as usual, is to be consistent.
