From a "Questioning User" (QU16) followup to "(3) Global Flood"--

>>RC> It seems obvious from the account that the year back then was 360 days, and that since then, the year has lengthened by about 5 days or so...

>QU16> Where in the account of the flood do you find this "obvious" fact?

Fact? I said it SEEMS obvious. What part of the statement do you have doubts about? Let me just touch on a few things.

Genesis 8:3,4 says, "And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat."

That is exactly FIVE months to the day from the date given in Genesis 7:11p--"...second month, the seventeenth day of the month..." The same 5 month interval was said to be 150 days, which would be 5 months of 30 days each, making a 12-month year of 360 days then.

>QU16> There's nothing explicit about the waters abating and the ark resting simultaneously. It's quite possible that these were two different incidents.

Not likely. The two words in contrast are "prevailed" and "abated", when speaking of the waters. When the waters began to increase, the ark was lifted up because the waters prevailed. The waters prevailed 150 days according to Gen.7:24.

The waters ceased to prevail when the ark rested on the 17th day of the 7th month, exactly 5 months to the day after the 17th of 2nd month. The waters were obviously no longer prevailing where the ark was sitting, but were abated from under the ark.

There was continual decrease of waters after that, and it was not until the 1st day of the 10th month that the tops of the mountains were seen, then another 40 days, and a raven and a dove were sent out, and then after 7 days the dove was again sent out and returned (in the EVENING) with an "olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth." (Gen.8:11p) The earth was still soggy though, so they still had to wait until the 27th day of the 2nd month of the next year, before they left the ark.

Now, going back to the original statement above, I had asked you: "What part of the statement do you have doubts about?" Well?

Remember that Jesus is the LORD and be not of a doubtful mind concerning the words of truth given by inspiration of God. Grace be unto you in charity for Jesus' sake. Amen. --Richard
