Barry Atherton Barry
Atherton studied at the Manchester College of Art &
Design from 1961-65 and then at the Royal Academy Schools
from 1966-69. In 1965 he was awarded the Leverhulme
travelling scholarship, studying ancient Egyptian, Greek
and Roman art in Europe, North Africa and the Middle
East. In 1976 he toured the museums and archeological
sites of Central America gathering information for a
series of History Paintings based on the
Pre-Columbian period. He most recently returned from a
visit sponsored by the Scottish Arts Council to northern
Greece and Turkey investigating the ways the ancient
Greeks used colour and light to enhance their sculpture.
The human figure and aspects of art history are recurring
themes in his work. He has been a lecturer at the Glasgow
School of Art since 1973.
