GREEK COINS
1. Aspendos, Pamphylia; 4th
Cent. B.C.; AR Stater (10.9 gm.). Obv: Two wrestlers of the early, and very
rare, "Belt Wrestlers" variety, three letters in field: (?) to
l., H below and between wrestlers, and X to r. (the only clear depiction
of this letter on examples I have seen, and undocumented in the major
references), all within a dotted circular border. Rev: Slinger advancing
r., about to discharge his sling; triskeles to l. and ΕΣΤ to r.,
all within a dotted circular border. Vente Publique 32, 20 Oct 1966, no. 134
(realized 1550 SF, plus 10% buyer's fee); Giessener Münzhandlung 102, 24 May
2000, no. 291 (realized 6200 DM plus 15% buyer's fee = approx. $3300). This coin
is better. Condition is VF+ with superb surfaces and

kneeling-running attitude r., carrying in his arms a struggling nymph who raises

Ammon. Rev: Athena enthroned left, holding Nike and resting left arm on shield,
on which is a lion's face; transverse spear resting on her right side;
ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ to right and
ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ to the left. A ram's head
is in the field to left and a star is on the throne. This is a
magnificent, life-like portrait of Alexander of fine style! Samothrace mint;

ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ to the left. A "F"
monogram and head of Tyche in the fields to left. This is a magnificent, life-like portrait of Alexander
the Great of

26. An excellent tetradrachm of
Antiochos VII, who reigned 138-129 B.C. Obv: His diademed head right. Note the very sight wear on the high
points. Rev: Athena standing left, holding a small figure of Nike
in her right hand. Her left hand holds a scepter and rests on a shield, upon
which can be seen a human face. Again, very little wear. David Sear wrote that Antiochos
VII, "almost alone amongst the later Seleukid monarchs,... ruled with
competency and integrity." He was killed in battle against the Parthians.
