1. Aspendos, Pamphylia; 4th Cent. B.C.; AR Stater (10.9 gm.). Obv: Two wrestlers of the early, and very rare, "Belt Wrestlers" variety,  three letters in field: (?) to l., H below and between wrestlers,  and X to r. (the only clear depiction of this letter on examples I have seen, and undocumented in the major references), all within a dotted circular border.  Rev: Slinger advancing r., about to discharge his sling; triskeles to l. and ΕΣΤ to r., all within a dotted circular border. Vente Publique 32, 20 Oct 1966, no. 134 (realized 1550 SF, plus 10% buyer's fee); Giessener Münzhandlung 102, 24 May 2000, no. 291 (realized 6200 DM plus 15% buyer's fee = approx. $3300). This coin is better. Condition is VF+ with superb surfaces and toning.................................................. (Image) $3800

Thasos, island of the Thracian Sea; 520-510 B.C.; AR Stater of archaic style Obv: Naked ithyphallic satyr in kneeling-running attitude r., carrying in his arms a struggling nymph who raises her r. hand in protest. Tarsos, Cilicia (struck in the name of the satrap Pharnabazos); 279-274 B.C.; AR stater (10.8 gm); Obv: Baal of Tarsos enthroned l. holding scepter, monogram to left (ankh symbol?); behind, Aramaic legend (= Baal tarz). Rev: Bearded male head l. (Ares?), wearing crested helmet; before and behind, Aramaic legend  (= Pharanabazu khilik). Von Aulock 5931. 19. Lysimachos; 323-281 B.C.; AR Tetradrachm. Obv: Diademed head of Alexander the Great, wearing the horn of Ammon. Rev: Athena enthroned left, holding Nike and resting left arm on shield, on which is a lion's face; transverse spear resting on her right side; ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ to right and ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ to the left. A ram's head is in the field to left and a star is on the throne. This is a magnificent, life-like portrait of Alexander of fine style! Samothrace mint; rare, thus. 20. Lysimachos; 323-281 B.C.; AR Tetradrachm (17.2 gm). Obv: Diademed head of Alexander the Great, wearing the horn of Ammon. Rev: Athena enthroned left,  holding Nike and resting left arm on shield, on which is a lion's face; transverse spear resting on her right side; ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ to right and ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ to the left. A "F" monogram and head of Tyche in the fields to left. This is a magnificent, life-like portrait of Alexander the Great of the finest style! Smyrna mint. Muller 408. 25. Macedon under the Romans; AR tetradrachm (17.1 gm); 158-149 B.C. Obv: Head of Artemis Tauropolos r., with bow and quiver over her shoulder, in the center of a Macedonian shield. 26. An excellent tetradrachm of Antiochos VII, who reigned 138-129 B.C. Obv: His diademed head right. Note the very sight wear on the high points. Rev: Athena standing left, holding a small figure of Nike in her right hand. Her left hand holds a scepter and rests on a shield, upon which can be seen a human face. Again, very little wear. David Sear wrote that Antiochos VII, "almost alone amongst the later Seleukid monarchs,... ruled with competency and integrity." He was killed in battle against the Parthians.  BMC 30 (var). aEF.... Obv: Two wrestlers; between wrestlers, FN(retrograde): in ex., magistrates names ΕΛΥΦΑ ΜΕΝΕΤΥΣ  Rev: Slinger advancing r., about to discharge his sling; triskeles before, (ΕΣ)ΤFΕΔΙΙY(Σ) behind, in dotted square. Much scarcer than varieties without magistrates names spelled out in the exergue). BMC pl. XLIV, 16, "Coins not in the British Museum"; Von Aulock 4568, except names reversed.
