1. Julius Caesar; d. 44 B.C.; AR Denarius.  Spain 46-45 B.C. Obv: Diademed head of Venus, r., Cupid behind. Rev: Gallic trophy with two bound captives below; the captive on the right looking up and to the left, with a distinctive Gaulish hair treatment, which obviously led Sear to remark, at  RSC 13,  "The Gaul may be Vercingetorix." The coin may also be found at SM 1404. VF+................(Image) SOLD

2. Brutus and Casca Longus; 43-42 B.C.; AR denarius. Obv: CASCA LONGVS; Laureate hd. of Neptune, r., trident below. Casca was the first of the assassins to stab Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, 44 B.C. Rev: BRVTVS IMP; Victory walking r. on broken scepter and holding a broken diadem. Brutus was one of the principle organizers of Caesar' assassination. Per H.A. Seaby: "This coin commemorates one of the victories of Brutus and Cassius, by which they hoped to restore freedom to Rome and break down all semblance of regal power." And yet, Brutus assumed the title of "Imperator" in 43 B.C. He committed suicide in 42 B.C. at Philippi, rather than be captured by Augustus and Mark Antony at that battle. RSC 3.  5. Tiberius; 14 - 37 A.D.; AR denarius (3.3 gm); the "Tribute Penny" of the Bible. The Temple priests,  testing Jesus, asked Him: 
"Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar , or not? But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a penny (denarius) that I may see it. And they brought it. And He said unto them, Whose is this image and inscription? And they said unto Him, Caesar's. And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's." (Mark 12:14-17). Obv: Laureate head of Tiberius, r. 18. Vespasian; 69-79 A.D.; AR denarius; Rev: "AVG" in wreath, with "EPHE" in monogram in the field. This is a scarce issue of the famous city of Ephesos. Very few provincial mints were authorized  to issue imperial Roman silver coins, and Ephesos was among the rarest. The coin has a banker's mark on the obverse and slight scratches on the reverse, which are barely visible to the naked eye; otherwise, it is in EF condition. 23. Titus, as Caesar; 69-79 A.D.; AR denarius. Obv: His laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust r. Rev: No legend. Titus Standing r. and captive Judaea seated on the ground, r., at the base of a palm tree. The coin was struck by some round, peen-shaped object, probably metal, at the base of the palm tree, in ancient times, which flattened the palm trunk and Titus' left leg. The impact carried through to flatten slightly Titus' head above the ear. Also, the coin is struck a bit off center. The coin is otherwise in a sharp, extremely fine condition. Note, for example, Titus' beard, and on the reverse, the palm branches, fruit, Titus and Judaea, etc. Virtually no wear. Rev: IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GE(R) (D)AC PP REST. Cornucopia upon thunderbolt, all within wreath. Restoring RSC Fabia 6. All coins of this series are exceedingly rare, and rarely listed for auction. When they are, they command very high prices. This coin is apparently UNIQUE, as verified by the British Museum on 17 August 2004. 45. Elagabalus; 218-222 A.D.; AR denarius (3.0 gm); Antioch mint. Obv: His laur., draped and cuirassed bust, r. Rev: SANCT DEO SOLI around, ELAGABAL in ex; slow quadriga r., bearing conical stone of Elagabalus of Emesa, on the front of which, an eagle, above it four parasols. RIC 195, RSC III, 268. 46. Julia Soaemias, mother of the Roman emperor Elagabalus, who reigned 218-222 A.D. AR denarius. Obv: her bust, r. Rev: Venus Caelestis stg. l., holding apple and scepter, star in field, r.  According to H.A. Seaby, she became a senator of ROME (!) and "she was to a great extent responsible for the excesses and cruelties of her son's reign." She was put to death at the same time as her son by soldiers of Rome in 222 A.D. aEF, with minor deposits. RIC 241..........(Image) SOLD

Rev: Felicitas stg. l., holding long caduceus and cornucopia. P. M. TR. P. III COS. P.P., S.C. in field. Like RIC 149, but no "II" after COS. RIC is incorrect in showing COS II, which only appears with TRP IIII. Spectacular EF. Magnificent patina. Dirt from the original find site has not been removed..................................... 50. Constantius I, as caesar; period of 294-May 305 A.D; AR argenteus (3.3 gm). Obv: CONSTANT-IVS CAESAR; his laureate head, right. Rev: VIRTVS MILITVM. The four princes sacrificing over tripod before archway in eight-turreted enclosure. Not listed in RIC but a close variant of RIC VI, p.460, #44a, Siscia mint. A spectacular coin in a true FDC condition, with mint luster in the fields. Further, this coin is free of the usual flan cracks found in many other examples...(Image) $1950
