whom Jesus Christ was crucified. Matthew 27:2. Æ prutah, 15 mm.
Obv: TIB(EPIOY) (K)AICAPOC. The letters in parenthesis are not visible. This
legend means "Of Tiberius Caesar." Between the inscriptions is a
"lituus," a staff of office, but "a pagan symbol
abhorrent to the Jews," per Hendin.
Rev:
date "LIZ" (Year 17) in wreath = 30 A.D. Hendin 649. The lighter areas on the coin are soil from the original find site. It has not been

2. Alexander Jannaeus;
103-76 B.C.; Æ lepton, 14 mm. The "Widow's Mite" of the
bible. Mark 12:41- 44. Obv: Upside-down anchor within a circle with
Alexander's name, in Greek, around the outside. Rev: Star surrounded by
a border of dots; Aramaic inscription around. It
is called the Widows Mite because Jesus is quoted as calling attention
to the poor widow at the temple tithing two "mites," (they are
small copper coins) and noting that the two mites represented all that
she had, so that her giving exceeded that of more wealthy people, who
gave only a tiny fraction of their wealth. Hendin

SOLD 3. Herod I, the
Great; 40-4 B.C.; Æ lepton, 15 mm. Matthew
writes of this infamous king ordering the "Massacre of the
Innocents," all children under the age of two, because he feared
"A King had been born to the Jews." Matthew 2:1-13 and
16-18. The obverse shows an anchor with "King Herod" around,
in Greek. The reverse shows double cornucopia, caduceus

Philip II; 4 B.C.- 34 A.D.; first husband of the notorious Salome. The
denomination is not recorded in history, so numismatists refer
to it by its size: Æ 18 mm. Matthew
14:3; Mark 6:17 - 6:29; Luke 3:19. The obverse shows the head of the
Roman emperor Tiberius, at whose pleasure Herod Philip served
as a satrap, with Tiberius' name and title around. The reverse
shows a temple, with the letters LΛΓ between the columns,
which is the date of "Year 33" (29/30 A.D.), with Philip's
