Using God as an Excuse for War

or

War Hawks Cashing In On Bush

Submitted to the Star Banner, April 18, 2004

Editor,

In David Aikman's book, A MAN OF FAITH, he says everything President Bush does he does so when he stands before God, God will say "Well done". Bush said, "I hope that's why we're all here." That kind of faith made Bush a natural "front man" for the war hawks, including brother Jeb, who recruited Bush as a presidential candidate in 2000. Now on his staff, the hawks have used Bush's idealism and religious beliefs to get him to believe he had a duty to God to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

In a press conference 4/13/04 Bush said, "I have a strong belief freedom is not this country's gift to the world. Freedom is the Almighty's gift to every man and woman in this world. And, as the greatest power on the face of this earth, we have an obligation to help the spread of freedom...what God called us to do." Noble mission; but, he's dead wrong is making his personal religious mission our national military mission.

Bush said God sent him into Iraq. Pope John Paul II responded, "If you go into Iraq, you go without God." Bush said the "real reason" he invaded Iraq was to give God's gift of freedom to the Iraqis. Feeling Americans wouldn't approve the Iraq war for Bush's God, Bush and the hawks provided Bob Woodward data for his book, PLAN OF ATTACK, to emphasize Bush did not go to war for his God. However, Bush's religious beliefs about the war are too hard to muffle.

James Mann, author of RISE OF THE VULCANS, THE HISTORY OF BUSH'S WAR CABINET, reports the hawks "attacked Iraq to change the dynamics of an undefined way Iraq helped Palestinians and was a distraction in peace efforts." The hawks wanted this since at least 1990.
