"We have watched the demise of U.S. flag deepsea shipping with remorse. There are some wonderful folks (see R. Boggs for labor information and an American sailor's view on American flag deepsea shipping and current status, Dan Nugent for extensive maritime schools, companies, and ports - great industry information!!) out there doing what they can to inform you about an industry - the maritime industry. The good news is there are exciting career opportunities available in maritime related industries and even more so in transportation management, the foundation of logistics. These opportunities in commercial transportation of goods by any mode: air, rail, road and water and their related services, are growing.
- if you have an interest in pursuing a career in the marine transportation industry, you do have some very interesting choices. The federal academy (USMMA) and five state academies (California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Texas) as well as the Great Lakes are available for you to choose from if you desire to pursue ocean shipping as a vocations: as a professional officer with a formal maritime education. Graduate schools in maritime studies (at the Masters degree level) are available at New York and Maine. There are many international institutions in addition (see Dan Nugent's site above).

Having pursued graduate studies in transportation management with a focus on the maritime side at the Maritime College of the State University of New York in New York City, I can highly recommend it for the full-time employed person working in or residing in the immediate vicinity of the city. Other graduate schools in the United States are available in transportation. Overseas opportunities may be of interest to some, especially if interested in working internationally.
The fascinating thing about transportation, specifically marine transportation, is that it has such a rich history and such a promising future. The research emphasis graduate schools in the field of international transportation and maritime studies (at the Doctorate degree level) is available at two international universities (the University of Wales at Cardiff and the University at Bergen... there may be more but I am not currently aware of them... if you are, please help me out by e-mail).
In the United States there are two well-known research marine transportation institutes supported by universities and the sponsors or clients of the research facilities. The National Ports and Waterways Institute in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, supported by Louisiana State University, and the Texas Transportation Institute (over 50 years old) with its Center for Ports and Waterways at Galveston, Texas, supported by a coalition of most of the public universities in Texas and headquartered at Texas A&M University.
The Texas Transportation Institute is the largest of its kind in the United States with a strong base of diversified disciplines available for many research tasks in transportation infrastructure.
