Order My Book

Holiday Lifestyles of the Culinarily Inept makes a great gift - give yourself a break too :) - see info below to order by mail.

On the Cool Mail from Famous People page you will find letters from Cathy (of cartoon fame), Phyllis Diller and Helen Gurley Brown all referring to my first book Up Against the Kitchen Wall and/or some old columns that appeared under the same title.

The following quotes are favorites lifted from letters from "real" people.

"As a chief dietician, I have a love of cooking, but also a sense of humor. I find your recipes fast and creative. As a young career woman, those are the types of recipes I use. (The time consuming, gourmet cooking is reserved for infrequent, special occasions!)"

"The hints and recipes have worked like charms. The dinner table comment from our son was "real mashed potatoes at last," and he's something of a gourmet cook. I did not enlighten him though later he discovered the secret when he read your book."

"Your book more than lived up to my expectations. You performed a great public service!" (Note attached to order: "This is the first cookbook I've ever ordered for myself. I've been given many which I never look at - yours I think I could stomach, no pun intended. Signed Married 23 years - two degrees, but hate to cook."

"I really enjoyed your cookbook. I was thrown into the kitchen six years ago when my wife became ill."

"I love it!! I have gotten rid of guilt feelings galore - especially about frozen food. Hope you can read this - my hand sometimes suffers from the 82-year jerks."

Holiday Lifestyles of the Culinarily Inept is my "Reader's Digest condensed version" of Up Against the Kitchen Wall which is not currently in print (see notice below, a redo is in the works).

Lifestyles is not just about the holidays - chapters include The Generic Party, Casual Indoor/Outdoor, Turkey to Tacos and miscellaneous tips and lots more stuff you won't find at this site. And it's the only place in the whole world to find my killer baked beans recipe.

To explain Turkey to Tacos, the first time Christmas duty fell into my lap the only thing I knew I could handle was a taco buffet - somewhat of a culture shock 20 years ago in Kansas City, but no real surprise to my guests. The color scheme was traditional anyway ...

You must have noticed I don't list recipes in the usual way. I'm glad everybody else does - makes it easier to fly by the mile long lists of ingredients. My style is meant to be non-intimidating and encourage any free-form creativity that may sneak up on you.

"Way cool! Tres cool! What a handsome and zoomy little treatise - not exactly a cookbook, because you zoom ahead too fast to actually compose recipes - but that's unique. If it was nicely sorted little recipes, I wouldn't read but one or two of 'em."

"I like the way you've written it, very funny and I can relate very well to it. I like the fact that measurements aren't a big deal, that's the way I always cook."

"Your book arrived this week. And I thought as I read the turkey advice, I can do that, I should invite the family over! We'll see, I have 6 months to wimp out ;-)."

"I loved the cookbook! Haven't had time to try anything out but I will. When I bought my house I learned fairly fast that the oven didn't work, because we were painting and I needed to keep some pizza warm for the work crew. Two years later, I needed an oven. I called someone out to fix it, and found out it wasn't broken after all, I just wasn't hitting the right buttons. I bought a new oven, about 3 years ago, when I remodeled the kitchen, because the old one didn't fit in. So far, I haven't had to use it, but it's nice to have one, anyway."
