Beautiful Samantha

Samantha was born the same day I left for the
Rainbow Bridge. That was 11 July 1985. My
human family (after having seen how great we
Dachsies are since having me around for thirteen
years) went on a search for an honest, reliable,
and kind breeder of Standard Dachshunds. They
found one in Bloomington, Minnesota. Tasha, the
mother of Samantha, had just had a litter of ten
puppies . . . count 'em . . . TEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell which one is Samantha?

Unbelievable! So much so that when the breeder
took those puppies to the vet for their first visit
he asked, "How many mothers for these litters?"

I watched the whole selection process and, man,
I gotta' tell you, humans can sure be dense, even
the two wonderful humans who loved and cared
for me. They went to see the puppies, looking for
a male (I take that as a compliment!) and this tiny
female, who can hardly walk, strays from the rest
to walk 20 feet to get to them. She was, of course,
Samantha! My human Mom got it fast! She said,
"I know you wanted a male, but she's picked us out
And she's even following us around." That said, the
purchase was made, but it was too soon to take her
away from her Dachsie Mom. Then came the next
silly question, "How will we know which one is ours?"
Hey! I was up here screaming, "SHE'LL KNOW!
SHE'LL KNOW! TRUST! TRUST! TRUST!" Of
course, nobody heard me. The breeder had them
choose a color to paint on Sam's front toenails and
everyone was happy. Fine thing! Not trusting a dog
to know where they want to go! But... it worked out.

Baby Samantha

This isn't the greatest picture quality, but they
didn't get many of Samantha when she was tiny.

When my human Mom and Dad returned to pick up
their puppy they were led to the basement. My "Dad"
squatted down as everyone talked (humans do so much
of that!) and one little puppy came over to them and
began to paw at his outstretched, open palm. He asked
which was theirs and was reminded of the toenail thing.
Now, this puppy was really pawing at him! He looked
at her toenails and it was her! They all happily chuckled
about that. The breeder knew about us Dachshunds,
but she kept a respectful silence and just smiled at them.

Five Wonderful Years!

Samantha

"Lady Samantha..." reeked with Love! She got
more strong reactions from humans than I ever
did. I tell you honestly, I really loved her too. I
kept wishing I was back there. She actually used
to hug people! She would put one paw on either
side of their neck and then nestle her head against
their neck. The truly sensitive people would get
telltale moist eyes and talk about the love energy
they could feel coming from her! It gives me big
catbumps (you know them as goosebumps) just
to think about it. This went on for five blessed years.

Swimming In Lake Calhoun

On All Hallows Eve in 1990 Samantha was hopping
about in excitement with all the odd kids coming to
the humans' door. That year Halloween was on a
Thursday. The next day, Friday, she showed them she
was reluctant to climb on anything, even stairs. Saturday
morning her hind legs were giving out on her. By Saturday
night she was dragging her hind legs. Sunday morning
when "Mom" picked her up ever so gently, Samantha's
bladder emptied from the pressure. "Mom" knew in her
heart, at that moment, she would have to say farewell
to Sammie. Monday morning they went with faint hearts
to the vet, still hoping for a miracle. That evening after
the vet informed them Samantha's spinal cord was
severed, they took her into the car and fed her everything
she loved, gave her lots of water which she hadn't had all
day and said their farewells. Other family members came
to say farewell... everyone loved her so very much!
The deed was done, with deep sadness. It took them
many thoughtful days to realize Samantha herself was
their miracle -- for five years they were blessed with her
total unconditional love! She truly was a most exceptional
dog! Even I knew that! By 5:30 PM on 4 November 1990
the humans were home, standing in their kitchen, crying in
disbelief. Their pain was acute and all-encompassing. My
humans were not impulsive people but suddenly they
reached for the newspaper to see if there were any ads
for miniature Dachshunds (they hoped, since Sam was a
standard, there would be less chance for back problems)
and there was an ad. They raced out and came home with
not one, but two miniature Dachshunds! Here they are!
