Bay Area Lactation Associates (BALA) was founded in 1986. It is a non-profit educational association of Lactation Specialists working in the Bay Area. Formal educational sessions are presented at the meetings. BALA is authorized by the California Board of Registered Nurses to grant CEU credit. Members of BALA are broken up into two groups-Associate and Active Members. Health professionals and others who share an interest in lactation can become Associate Members. Active Membership is reserved for Registered Nurses, health professionals, and Lactation Specialists.
BALA's Goals
- To provide advanced education in lactation to lactation specialists and other health professionals
- To provide a forum for case presentation and discussion
- To enhance communications among lactation specialists
- To educate Physicians, nurses and the community on issues related to breastfeeding
- To provide physicians and other health professionals with a referral resource of qualified Lactation Specialists
Services Provided
- Professional in-service programs for physicians and nurses
- Prenatal breastfeeding classes
- Counseling new parents with breastfeeding problems
- Electric breast pump rentals
- CEU credit available
