However, I would like to thank everyone who sent their condolenses to for Mike, Anna and family. They are really apreciated. I am happy to say that almost all of you sent them. If you didn't, let's just say your not exactly my favorite person right now, ok? Anyway, I apoligize for not doing a newsletter in a while, but with Raelene's passing, plus personal stuff I have been unable to...until now...

Jacqueline Susann / Paperback / Published 1997
Our Price: $9.60 ~ You Save: $2.40 (20%)
Synopsis:
Sex and drugs and shlock and more--Jacqueline Susann's addictively
entertaining trash classic about three showbiz girls clawing their way
to the top and hitting bottom in New York City has it all. Though it's
inspired by Susann's experience as a mid-century Broadway starlet who
came heartbreakingly close to making it, but did not, and despite its
reputation as THE roman á clef of the go-go 1960s, the novel turned out
to be weirdly predictive of 1990s post-punk, post-feminist, post "riot
grrrl" culture. Jackie Susann may not be a writer for the ages,
but--alas!--she's still a writer for our times. Note: Anna, Sharon Tate and Barbara Parkins (whom all starred in the film version) are all featured on the cover of this reprinted version of the 1966 novel.

Patty Duke portrays Amish woman in `Harvest of Fire' ( Gannett News
Service )
For decades, Patty Duke's life was stuffed with semi-glorious chaos.
She had a quick mind, a tiny body and a knack for self-destruction. Her
highs and lows were epic.
And now? ``Harvest of Fire,'' at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday (April 21) on CBS,
lets Duke visit an alternate way of life.
There she was, driving the backroads near Iowa City.
``I was traveling along, having just bought some apple juice at one of
those roadside stands,'' Duke says. ``And it was sensational apple
juice, I should add.
``Anyway, I was driving along and I thought: `Oh my God, this is the
Heartland! This is the place I've heard so much about!'''
Words like ``Heartland'' could be cliches, but this rang true.
``There was a wonderful feeling,'' Duke says. ``People were just open-
armed. At any little marketplace, they were very reassuring.''
The film is about a confrontation between cultures.
Two Amish barns are set on fire, suggesting a hate crime. A modern-
style FBI agent (Lolita Davidovich) investigates, forming a hesitant
friendship with a quiet Amish woman (Duke).
The filming meant another culture shock. Hollywood was coming to the
edge of Amish country.
``I went into the country, just to observe and absorb,'' Duke says.
``Then there were a number of seamstresses working on the production,
who had been members of the church.''
Duke says she arrived with only ``the usual superficial notions.''
Some of them turned out to be true. (Yes, the Amish people were quiet,
diligent, polite.) Still, she found some surprises:
-- Unlike the film's plot, there was no hint of hatred. ``The
townspeople, who are not Amish, were reverential toward them. They
couldn't say enough good things about the Amish.''
-- There is a light side. Amish teens are allowed to experiment with
cars and other modern ways, before settling into the faith.
-- There's also a dark side: For seemingly minor transgressions, people
are shunned; other Amish -- including their kin -- are told not to talk
to them.
``I was never able to meet anyone who could explain shunning,'' Duke
says. ``On an intellectual level, I get it. On an emotional level, it
still seems cruel.''
Still, Duke followed the basics of the Amish beliefs.
Her own childhood was filled with the rich imagery of the Catholic
Church. She understood the reason for strong spirituality.
``Most of them came from Germany,'' Duke says. ``They were running away
-- sadly, from my viewpoint -- from Catholic oppression. Their
perspective was that this could never happen again, if they pulled
back.''
So the Amish live quietly. Their lives provide a contrast with the chaos
of Duke's childhood.
``I remember my mother telling me that from the time I was a toddler, I
was very busy,'' she says. ``I was always drawn to stimulus.''
Fame and ``The Miracle Worker'' complicated things. Duke was starring on
Broadway at 14, won an Academy Award at 16, had her own TV show at 17.
Playing identical cousins, she threw herself into the TV work. As
William Schallert, who played her dad, put it: ``She was the most
disciplined and professional actor I've ever known.''
That took fierce energy and Duke's personal life crumbled.
She married once at 19 and again (unconsummated, she says) in her early
20s. She had tough bouts with drugs and sex.
Later, Duke was diagnosed as manic depressive, which is being treated.
Outside of that, however, she's groped for a non-chaotic life.
Duke was once a whirlwind, racing between roles and the presidency of
the Screen Actors Guild. Now she prefers short-term work.
``I could be happy with three projects a year,'' Duke says. ``I could
get my creative jollies and still be very comfortable.''
That comfort is in Idaho, with her husband (a former Army sergeant) and
their 7-year-old son. They have a 40-acre spread in the country, but
spend more time at a six-acre spread alongside a village.
``I dearly love the serenity of the country,'' Duke says, ``but I also
love being able to walk to the little town. I can't give up the luxury
of forgetting milk and walking into town to get it.''
Life slides into the slow gear -- especially when winter lingers.
``We had four glorious days of spring,'' Duke says. ``The next week,
there was a foot of snow.''
That made it a perfect time to relax and do some cooking. Just ask the
people she met in Iowa.
