WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL PATTY DUKE NEWSLETTER #11!!!

Hi, all it has been a long time since my last newsletter as you all know. Sorry about that but have been very busy with finals and all. Today was finally my last day of high school, other than graduation rehersal and the ceremony on Monday and Tuuesday. Then off to college in the fall. I will still keep up the newsletter from my dorm room though, so not to worry.

I have heard from Mike a few times since my last writing to you all. Vicki of the NL sent me an article that Anna would be starring in the lead of the Tennesee Williams classic "The Glass Menagerie" at a local Idaho theatre for free, but I asked Mike if it were still on and he said it's been delayed because of the reunion schedule. I will tell when I hear anymore about it. It was supossed to be in October.

Mike also has told me that they are taking their tragedy about Raelene day by day and coping as well as anyone could under the circumstances.

I am donating a Patty Duke Horsman 1965 doll to Anna and Mike from the newsletter. I just got a mint in box one (something I thought I'd never get!), so I'm going to give my old one to them. It's in wonderful condition and Anna said she didn't have one in the chat and I'm sure it will cheer them up. I wll be sending it out this coming week.

Jacqueline Susann / Paperback / Published 1997
Our Price: $9.60 ~ You Save: $2.40 (20%)
Synopsis:
Sex and drugs and shlock and more--Jacqueline Susann's addictively
entertaining trash classic about three showbiz girls clawing their way
to the top and hitting bottom in New York City has it all. Though it's
inspired by Susann's experience as a mid-century Broadway starlet who
came heartbreakingly close to making it, but did not, and despite its
reputation as THE roman á clef of the go-go 1960s, the novel turned out
to be weirdly predictive of 1990s post-punk, post-feminist, post "riot
grrrl" culture. Jackie Susann may not be a writer for the ages,
but--alas!--she's still a writer for our times. Note: Anna, Sharon Tate and Barbara Parkins (whom all starred in the film version) are all featured on the cover of this reprinted version of the 1966 novel.

OK, I am really mad b/c I did not even know Mack was doing an AOL chat!! It was on May 29th, and I found the transcript just last night, so here it is....

Q: Was there ever a question of you doing anything other than acting?

Mackenzie Astin: Yeah. Right after facts of life finished I became a little disillusioned with the politicking. I thought then that I didn't want to have any part of show business and I thought I'd go into journalism. I opted to try acting again, but I am still thinking about it. I think I will go to college. My brother and his wife are graduating in a couple of weeks. I can see he's so happy about it.

Please welcome Mackenzie Astin of the new film The Last Days Of Disco!

Question: Are you a big fan of disco?

EA Astin: Yeah. Definitely. My brother always played it... good music. I'm glad it's coming back.

Question: The movie has a lot to do with Studio 54 in that era. Would you have put yourself through as much as the characters do to get in?

EA Astin: It's actually a composite. The club, that is. Did you enjoy making this movie? I enjoyed making this movie very much. A great crew. I probably had too much fun.

Question: Any plans for the future?

EA Astin: My future plans are pretty open ended.

Question: How was it playing someone who wasn't cool in this movie?

EA Astin: It was very different from any character I've played before. He wasn't popular... it shows how yuppie can be a dirty word. We don't want to be identified that way, but we are.

Question: What is your favorite disco song and who is it by?

Ea Astin: Ok. That's tough. A friend of mine, her father is Michael Zaeger. I'm a big fan of Dancing Queen, you know Abba.

Question: Are you the same one who played on facts of life?

Ea Astin: Yes. That is I. I was Andy Moffat. That boarding school, I came on toward the end of the show. I got to work with George Clooney toward the end of the show. I haven't seen him in several years. He keeps himself kind of busy.

Question: What was it like growing up the son of Patty Duke and Mr. Adams?

Ea Astin: Entertaining. It's hard to put a perspective on it. They're my mom and dad. They always enjoyed their work and people always got a kick out of seeing them on the street. Gomez is definitely one of the coolest characters on television... I got lucky.

Question: Mack--are you and your whole family ever going to do a project together?

Ea Astin: That's a great question. I hope so. Back when my parents were still married, we thought we might do something like Oliver Twist.. but we might try to do something with my brothers

Question: What was the most difficult scene in the movie??

Ea Astin: The dancing scenes were hard. The music isn't being played when we're shooting it. They'd have a thump track, which is just the bass. So we'd try to move to what we thought the beat was. It was Strange.

Question: What is it like to be in such a famous family? Is there alot of pressure to be great? Keep up the good work!

Ea Astin: Thank you. That's nice of you to say. there's not a lot of pressure to work...but to be comfortable with what we're doing. My dad wanted me to go to college and I still haven't gone yet. Education and being well rounded was important to them.

Question: You played a golf champion in Harrison Burgeon. Do you play in real life, if so what's your handicap?

Ea Astin: My dad and I were both in that movie. My handicap is not as low as it should be... I do play in real life.

Here is a question from Lani1508 for Mackenzie Astin
Question: Do you have a role in particular that has been your favorite?

Ea Astin: Yes. A guy named Harry Velard in In Love and War about Ernest Hemingway. I played the father of the real life man that produced the film. Chris O'Donnell played Hemingway in that. It took place during World War I.

Question: Hey what do you think is the most important message in your movie The last days of Disco?

Ea Astin: There are a few messages, but then...I don't know if it's meant to be a message movie. If there is one, I guess it's that disco was an important time and shouldn't be forgotten. Enjoyed. Maybe that people should've taken more responsibility.

Question: I loved you in I Dream Of Jeannie the reunion show. I heard a rumor that Alicia Silverstone is starring in the feature. Will you be Major Heally?

Ea Astin: Is this for real they're going to do a movie? I'd love that. Thanks for the tip!

Question: Have you ever considered doing another sitcom?

Ea Astin: Yes. There are a couple that are on now when they were pilots...at the time I was working on a feature and I did that instead. If something's well written and intelligent and clever enough, sure. They're so much more like theater. You get an audience. And that's fun.

Question: Did you like working with Kate beckinsale and robert sean leonard?

Ea Astin: Oh Kate's terrific. A very funny girl She's going to be hugely successful. Robert Sean Leonard and I would do the crossword together. He'd worked with my brother Sean and we knew each other from before. He wasn't on the set quite as much. But yeah.

Question: you were GREAT in The Long Island Incident!!! What kind of research did you do for that role.

Ea Astin: Thank you. That was a bout a real life occurrence when someone shot and killed all these people on the Long Island Railroad. I played the son of someone who was killed. There was so much coverage, there were video tapes of my character, Kevin McCarthy. The research was pretty easy because there was so much material. Kevin McCarthy is a very courageous person. A survivor.

Question: How do you handle the status of "celebrity/stud" and still stay grounded?

Ea Astin: I don't think that status exists for me, really. Hey, Matt Damon, Leo DiCaprio. Okay. They're celebrity studs. Ben Affleck... No. Not me. I'm a utility guy. My parents between them have a huge wealth of showbiz experience that I've been able to draw upon. That's helped to ground me and see things in perspective. Celebrity Status doesn't make you more important, it doesn't mean anything. I grew up inside of it, and that helped.

Question: You are the sexiest guy alive! All I want I want for my birthday, which is in a week, is for you to say: I love you Chelsea!

Ea Astin: I love you Chelsea, Happy Birthday. You must be a Gemini. I think my girlfriend might get jealous...

Question: You named Affleck and Damon, have you ever written a script? Do you want to direct?

Ea Astin: No. I haven't written a script. I did write for the school newspaper. My friends and family have been on me to do it. like to but I haven't done it yet.

Question: If you could be in a movie with any actor or actress, who would it be and why?

EA Astin: Paul Newman. Because he's the coolest man alive. that's it.

Question: I understand you are a cat lover, what's his name?

Ea Astin: His name is Monroe. We'd like another one. And we'll take suggestions for names.

Question: If you could play a movie role from the past, what would you pick?

Ea Astin: There are so many terrific roles. But I'd love to play one of the guys on the team of SLAPSHOT. I'm a huge fan of that movie.

Question: Were you in Wyatt Earp, or am I nuts? I'm nuts anyway... for you.

Ea Astin: Yes. I was in the last minute or two of Wyatt Earp. They worked in a really hot and dusty desert for months. Then I was working in Port Angelus Washington. The crew was so relieved and joyous and I got to be around for that.

Question: Have you ever gone up for a part against your brother?

Ea Astin: We go up against each other more often than you would think. But as actors, we're actually different types. I'd love to play his brother in a movie.

Question: Are you and your brother close?

Ea Astin: Yeah. Very much so. He and his wife have a beautiful daughter, Alexandra. It's terrific being an Uncle. It's a very convenient position. You can play with the baby as much as you want and then if things get dicey, hand 'em back over.

Question: What's your favorite type of music?

Ea Astin: I have so many female singer songwriters in my collection. Sarah McGlaughlin, Natalie Merchant and the Dave Matthews Band. They're great.

Question: Tell your agent to get you into Kevin Costner's new movie "Message In A Bottle" Hint Hint. Paul Newman is in it

Ea Astin: Thank you. Another good tip.

Question: Do you like regular, honey nut, or frosted cheerios?

Ea Astin: Well, it depends on what the rest of your day is going to be like. Frosted flakes cut up the roof of your mouth so I stay away from them.

Question: What are your hobbies/enjoyments?

Ea Astin: I play softball. I like to go to the movies and go out to eat. I just moved near Melrose and I never spent time in that neighborhood even though I grew up in LA. Fabulous people watching.

Question: Was it weird working with Jennifer Beals in this movie. She was in Flashdance. And that was SO 80s.

Ea Astin: Yeah, but it was good 80's. I didn't get to work with her that much. I only got to meet her when I was wearing OUTLANDISH wardrobe. I have trouble getting into the club, so I wearthis costume that hides my face. That's the day Jennifer Beals comes to the set. I had to act like nothing was weird. Shook her hand...

Question: Have you ever acted on stage or considered acting on stage?

Ea Astin: Yes. I've done two plays. That's an embarrassingly small amount. Both my parents being theatre trained. I was 17, and I did, in a small theater. I was also Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate factory in fifth grade.

Question: Was there ever a question of you doing anything other than acting?

Ea Astin: Yeah.

Question: Are you aware that you have an AOL fan club?

Ea Astin: I know my mom has a page. If I do, then now I am aware and I'll go check it out. Thank you.
