GOLIC - Original Online Investment Club
Genie OnLine Discoverers, or GOLD, is one of the original
online investment clubs. Formed in 1992 on the GEnie telecommunications service,
and now on the Internet itself, the club has pioneered the art of transforming
the traditional investment group experience into an online entity. Other clubs have modeled their virtual clubs after ours. It's flattering, but it's only the beginning. The merits of a cyberclub -- or an online investment club -- are plenty. By having members spanning the country we get a broader sense of various demographic trends and get a more reliable pulse than a locals-only club would produce. The interaction is also more intense since we communicate online. That means that feedback is perpetual and immediate. Beyond getting better information and more effective communication GOLD is also about friendships and education. As a member of NAIC dating back to 1992, GOLD is recognized as one of the more diverse investment clubs. The club has received national recognition in the March 1998 issue of ComputerLife and a May 1998 feature in The Motley Fool. Our investment style is a flexible marriage of Peter Lynch Principles, NAIC's Stock Selection Guide and socially responsible investing. While our stocks were typically purchased through a discount broker we also considered the many dividend reinvestment plans available. All members are free to nominate stocks for club consideration. Ultimately all matters are put to a vote in a process that has, in the past at least, proven to be both mentally and financially rewarding. Our portfolio spanned various sectors and market caps. We invite you to find out more in our eGroups forum, where we discuss the market, buy and sell candidates and life in general. Unfortunately the club voted in June of 2004, after nearly a dozen years of Internet pioneering, in favor of disbanding the club. Yet the club still offers its forum and bears proof that an online investment club can work. Thanks for stopping by to hear our story. These are some of the best investment club books out there to get you started.
