I consider Thomas Canty to be one of the best fantasy artist around today and after a long fruitless search across the 'net I've decided he doesn't get near the credit he deserves. For instance, I'd like to see him win the Hugo Award. He's done tons of book covers, including the Keltiad series, several of the Redwall books, and all of the The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror collections. For the Keltiad, the author herself let me know that she has all of his covers on her site, those are in the Gallery at: http://www.lizardqueen.com/html/gallery.html. All the Keltia information for her characters and their world is a step back at: http://www.lizardqueen.com/html/keltcomp.html. At one point there was a poster done for the first book, The Hawks Gray Feather, but I didn't buy it right then and now all I can find is a lithograph that not in my budget. At the official Redwall site, Brian Jacques mentions Chris Baker who did the covers for the British editions, but seems to ignore Canty's work completely (although it does get a blurb at the SF book list site).
The images below were all taken from trading cards (there are 90 total). The cards themselves were available at most comic book stores and other such shops for $15, but I haven't seen any in a while.

#25 Alamut. One of the things I (and most roleplayers) do is see images and instantly think of game characters. This one made me think of my first Amber character (and online name sake) Egwenna. On the back of one of his cards Canty says that horses are a problem to draw for him. I think he does okay, and given everything else he does, having only one weakness is pretty admirable.
#74 Mattimeo. From the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. Proving that Canty can draw any hero, regardless of species. |
