Failures!
THE COIL FROM
HELL!!
The failures include installing an Accell Supercoil that AutoZone deemed
fit to put back on the shelf after someone had fried it. It fried my ignition,
distributor, and most of the wires to the ECM. I was lucky though,
Ford installed fuses on the wires so it didn't cook my EEC-IV computer.
Part Number: M-7101-F
THE
GUTTER!!
I also installed a B&M Shift Kit in my AOD transmission. At that time,
Ford Motorsport sold B&M kits as Motorsport items. It shifted like a
dream with a loud chirp at each gear until the next morning. I took
out my buddy for a drive and punched it hard. The transmission shifted from
first to second so hard it broke one of my drivers seat rails. I then
found that it would'nt shift into 3RD gear at all. I took it to the Ford
house so my buddy Drifty (R.I.P) could look at it. He removed the tranny
and converter to find that the convertor had been gutted by the first 3 or
4 inches of the transmission input shaft shattered into large chunks. All
the transmission clutches were burnt badly and the planetary gears were tore
to hell. After it was all fixed it cost me $1600 dollars. I WON'T
DO THAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
WHAT LIFT CAM DO YOU
HAVE?
Well, I rebuilt my engine at 114,000 miles and decided this was a good time
to install another camshaft. At the time I didn't have the automotive knowledge
I have now, so I asked around about cams. I called Competition Cams,
Lunati, and Crane for advice on which would suit my needs. Crane seemed
to have the right answers to my questions, so I purchased the Crane Compucam
20/20 for $228.00. I installed it and then broke the engine in like
the Ford Manual said to. The man at Crane tech said there would be
a vast improvement in low end and a very noticeable gain in power throughout
the RPM band. I ran the engine for about 1000 miles before really getting
on the accelerator. I stomped it and I couldn't tell any difference
whatsoever. Actually, it felt like I was going slower and I was. I
raced my buds LX 5.0 and I got waxed big time. Normally I would stay
a half a car link behind him till after the quarter mile was up then
pass him like he was standing still. You might say that the rebuild
was bad or something was not put together correctly, but that was not the
case. I yanked the Crane cam out and put the original back in. We
raced again and I beat him in the quarter and on top end. I called
Crane and explained what was happening and asked for a refund. The
tech rep continued to say that the Crane was superior to the Ford one, so
I invited him to install the cam himself and see what he thought. I
sent it back to Crane and about a month later I got my refund with an apology
letter.
