The Excitement Level
I cooked up an index known as the “Excitement Level” to judge just how exciting the bowling telecasts are that I watch. Partially because this would be an easier way to catalog the shows, and a better way to select telecasts worthy of watching.
The Excitement Level index takes into account three things:
-The total pins of the games shot on the show (usually a higher-scoring telecast is more exciting than a lower-scoring one)
-The total of the differences of the scores shot in each match. For example, if the scores were 290-280, 265-250, 196-186, and 145-144, the total difference would be (10+15+10+1=)36.
-The winner’s purse. Usually the higher the purse, the more intense the competition is.
The Formula
The Excitement Level is found by taking the quotient of the square root of the total pins and the total match differences, and multiplying that quotient by the square root of the winner’s purse divided by 10000, and then taking THAT answer and multiplying it by 100.
The highest Excitement Level index I have on my shows is 250.00 in the case of the 1997 ABC Senior Masters, where a rolloff was held, every match was within 10 pins, and a huge winner's purse of $60 grand. It is easily the most exciting telecast I have on tape.
