Returning home

Brice was animatedly relating his adventures to Aragorn as they walked hand in hand behind Annie and Kathye on the way back to the Paris vortex.

“And then we played ‘spit’ with Andrew, and then a man got mad at us, and then Nan got mad at him, and then…,”

Annie turned around and glanced at Brice before flashing an amused smile at Aragorn.

“Aragorn’s a very patient man,” Annie said to Kathye.

Kathye glanced at Brice, who was still chatting away. “And Brice is a very talkative child,” she said, rolling her eyes ever so slightly.

“I wonder how Kionach will react when Brice tells her where he’s been,” Annie mused.

“We’ve already talked about that,” said Aragorn, to Annie’s surprise. “Haven’t we Brice?”

Brice nodded dutifully. “Don’t tell Nona about the magic door,” he repeated to Aragorn.

“And?”

“And don’t tell Nona about the buses, and the boat, and the ‘Awful Tower.’”

Aragorn patted Brice on the head. “Good boy.”

“Can I tell her about the spit game?”

“Erm…no.”

“Can I tell her about the big toys in the park?”

Aragorn shook his head. “I’m afraid not,” he said to Brice. “You can’t tell her anything you and Omar did here. All right?”

Brice nodded. “All right. Can I go walk with Omar?”

Aragorn nodded, and let Brice skip ahead to join his friend.

“You don’t really think he’s not going to tell her?” Annie asked Aragorn.

Aragorn snorted. “No, but I’m hoping he’ll keep quiet long enough for me to think of what to tell her first. That is, if she doesn’t know already,” he added.

“Oh. Right. Nearly forgot about that,” said Annie.

“Well, let’s hope she doesn’t know,” said Kathye. “The fewer people that know about the vortex, the better.”

well, I'm glad we found the boys, and Nan, but this place just seems so busy now that I've been to the bakery. I don't think I could live here anymore.

Unknown to Aragorn, a group of Parisians, standing outside a CD-store, whisper excitedly, pointing at the tall man walking in the middle of the modley bunch.

"C'est Viggo!"

"A Paris. Tu est fou!"

"Non! Regarde lá!"

Two girls gather all their courage and walk to the group of Bakery people. One taps cautiously Aragorn’s arm.

"Monsieur, voulez-vous signer mon cahier?"

Not speaking french, Aragorn frowns at her question. Alinora helps him out.

"She asks you to sign that piece of paper."

"But why?"

Alinora shrugs, not knowing herself either.

The two girls giggle excitedly as Aragorn marks the paper and returns it.

"Merci beaucoup!"

The girls run excitedly back to their friends.

"Why do they want me to sign..."

"Awagon!" Omar suddenly calls out, pointing at a large poster with a big picture of Aragorn. Underneath it read:

"THE LORD OF THE RINGS - THE TWO TOWERS
OUT ON DVD - NOW!!!!"

“Awagorn, that’s you!” Brice echoed Omar’s observation.

Annie stared at the poster, then at Aragorn, then at the poster, then back to him again. “He sure does look like you.”

Aragorn raised an eyebrow as he, too, stared curiously at the poster. “Indeed,” he said quietly.

“Ah, now I get it,” Annie said slowly. “Toby and Suz must have figured he was you,” she pointed at the poster. “Or rather you were him. Are him. You know what I mean, right, dude?”

“Right,” Aragorn said absently as he moved in to take a closer look at the poster.

Kathye took hold of his arm. “Erm…let’s go,” she said, attempting to pull him away. “We’ve got to get the boys home, remember?”

Aragorn didn’t budge. “I don’t understand,” he mused out loud. He frowned, then turned to Kathye. “What is the meaning of this?"

oooo...Kathye. I think I twisted my ankle. Aragorn, could you give me a hand to get back to the bakery where I can lie down? I don't think I can walk back on my own.

*Nan bites Aragorn's ear and hisses softly, then glances over at Pam, trying to get the hint across that if he doesn't help her, the cat's going to make things very uncomfortable for the ranger*

Aragorn helped Pam to her feet. Well, "foot".

Kathye started leading them away from the poster (looking around to make sure they weren't going to run into any others).

"The vortex entrance is over here. Everyone through. It's time to go home!"

One by one, everyone stepped into a slightly simmering patch of air and vanished. When it came Aragorn and Pam's turn, he looked at Kathye and said, "I still don't understand."

She sighed. "I'll try to explain when we're home. Or maybe I'll just drug you and see if I can make you forget about it. Either way." She smiled and pushed him into the vortex.

Home at last!

Date Posted: Oct 9, 03 - 11:53 AM

Ariana, Omar, and Brice came in to the kitchen first, followed by the others.

“Thank God!” cried Leandra as she rushed over and tightly embraced Brice. “You had me so worried! Are you all right?”

Before the child could answer, Aragorn came in carrying Pam.

“Oh, dear! What happened?” said Leandra, looking worried.

“Sprained ankle,” Aragorn answered calmly. “Don’t worry. She’ll be fine.”

Still alarmed, Leandra quickly looked Brice over. “Are you all right?”

“Yes,” said Brice. “We had fun!” he told her excitedly. “We spit from the Awful Tower, and we went on a big bus, and we ate pommes frites, and we…!”

Kathye rolled her eyes. “So much for keeping any secrets around here.”

“… played on big toys in the park, and we rided a boat, and….”

“Of course,” said Annie, “Aragorn did only tell him not to tell Kionach. Didn’t you?”

Aragorn merely shook his head, snorted, and grinned as he carried Pam past the talkative Brice.

“…we saw a man with wheels on his feet, and we pulled strings on coloured bottles that went ‘bam!’ and then the men flashed lights and we ran fast and …”

Brice’s voice tapered off as Aragorn carried Pam to her room and sat her down on the bed. “Now, let’s see that ankle,” he said to her.

Aragorn came back to the kitchen with a frown. “Pam’s ankle wasn’t hurt at all,” he said, giving Kathye a suspicious look.

“Erm…must have been the vortex,” she said shrugging.

Aragorn grinned. “That was her explanation, too.”

Leandra tapped him lightly on the shoulder. “My lord,” she interrupted. “Shouldn’t we be going soon? You’re supposed to take Brice and me to Kionach’s today, remember?”

“So I am.”

“You can’t leave just yet,” said Kathye.

“But, Mistress Kathye,” said Leandra. “If we don’t leave now, it will be too dark to travel.” She looked at Aragorn. “Kionach will be worried if we don’t show up.”

“Nasir will be going to Sherwood,” said Kathye. “I’m sure he wouldn’t mind delivering a message to Kionach to say that you were delayed.”

“I think that would be best,” agreed Aragorn. “We’ll go tomorrow,” he said to Leandra.

A Silent Moment
Name: Annie
Date Posted: Oct 12, 03 - 3:14 PM

Happy to leave all of the commotion in the kitchen with the boys’ safe return, Annie went outside with two mugs of new cider. She had watched Nasir discreetly escape through the back door to leave Omar, Ariana and the newly returned Ferran to get reacquainted.

“Here,” she said, handing Nasir a mug. He held up his hand in refusal. “I know you don’t drink beer and the like, but this is all right,” she said. “It hasn’t had time to really ferment yet.”

Nasir took the mug, sniffed it, then nodded his approval.

They sat quietly for a moment, listening to the muffled chatter happening in the kitchen.

Annie finally broke their silence. “So, Omar’s never met his father?”

Nasir shook his head.

“Is Ferran going to stay a while then?”

He shrugged his shoulders.

“So, are you upset about him coming back?” Annie questioned.

He shook his head.

“Something else then?”

He shrugged with indifference.

Annie grinned. “Ah. It’s a woman.”

He looked at her with surprise.

“Oh, come on now,” she said resolutely. “I know I’m right.”

He sighed.

Annie frowned. “Where is she?”

He shrugged.

“You miss her?”

Nasir sighed again.

“I understand if you don’t want to talk about it.”

He nodded in thanks.

“You don’t talk much, do you?” Annie said grinning.

He snorted as he tried to suppress a grin.

“Not that I mind,” she said, averting her eyes coyly. “Sometimes silence says a lot.”

Nasir grinned and nodded in agreement.

“You know, I do now how to be quiet.” She took a sip of her cider and was silent…for about 10 seconds. “Sometimes,” she added with a grin.

Aragorn found Nasir and Annie in the garden. “I’ve been looking for you,” he said.

Annie raised her eyebrows. “Me?”

“No, Nasir.”

It was Nasir’s turn with the eyebrows.

“Kathye said you would be going back to Sherwood,” said Aragorn. “I wonder if you’d mind stopping off at Kionach’s to tell her that I won’t be bringing Brice and Leandra just yet.”

Nasir nodded obligingly.

“Is something wrong?” asked Annie.

“Nothing’s wrong. I just think it would be best if Brice weren’t so…excitable when he sees Kionach.”

“Ah,” said Annie. “Good idea.” She paused a moment, then turned to Nasir. “Say, could you take me with you?” Nasir frowned. “I’d like to talk to her my father. Well, about our father,” she added.

“You may find that a difficult task,” said Aragorn.

“Oh?”

“She’s not very forthcoming when it comes to strangers.”

“Strangers? I’m not a stranger. I’m her sister. Well, half-sister, anyway.”

“Yes,” said Aragorn. “And she may see you as a threat because of that.”

“A threat? I don’t understand,” said Annie shaking her head.

“Just be careful,” Aragorn warned.

“Annie will be safe with me,” said Nasir.

Annie looked at the Saracen with pleasant surprise. “You spoke!” she said grinning.

Nasir grinned back at her.

“Well, then, let’s go,” she said to Nasir.

And with that, Annie and Nasir headed off in the direction of Sherwood.

Aragorn came back into the kitchen and found Kathye pouring herself a cup of coffee. She saw Aragorn and froze.

"You seem to have been avoiding me," he said.

"No, not at all, there's just been a lot to take care of." She waved her hand in a vague gesture.

"Well, you seem to have some time now. You said that you'd explain about those paintings."

Kathye sighed.

"Take a seat. Can I get you something to drink?"

He gave her a slightly suspicious look.

"Oh, honestly! I'm not going to drug you!"

She plopped herself down in the chair next to him.

Just then, Daniel wandered in and filled his cup with coffee.

"Hey, Aragorn! You know, we saw posters for LoTR and you look an awful lot like an actor...."

"Daniel!" Kathye said. "You're not helping!"

Daniel took his coffee and backed out of the room.

Kathye turned to Aragorn. "The thing is, there is reality, and then there is reality. Reality is somewhat...fluid... around the time vortex. The vortex twists what we think of as the laws of physics in order to operate. Honestly, around here, they're just the suggestions of physics."

"And what does this have to do with those paintings of me?"

Kathye took a deep breath. "You're not from the same reality as the rest of us. This is not just some place far from middle earth. For me, you are a..."

She muttered something.

"I can't possibly have heard that right. Say that again."

"You are a fictional character."

"I can't possibly have heard that right. Say that again."

"You are a fictional character."

"I wouldn't worry too much about that, though," came a voice from behind them. "Strictly speaking, she did marry one, after all."

Kathye looked up to see Sar sporting a classic evil grin.

Tell me a story...
Name: Sar
Date Posted: Oct 16, 03 - 6:33 PM

Sar fixed herself a mug of tea, then sat down across the table from Aragorn. "Kathye means well, but her bailiwick is physics, and I don't think physics is what's actually at work here."

Aragorn still looked a little wild-eyed. "What is it that you think is at work here?"

"Storytelling," Sar said firmly. "Which just so happens to be my bailiwick, thank you very much."

She took a swallow of tea and cleared her throat. "There are two basic theories of where storytelling comes from. The inspiration to tell a particular story, I mean. One is that the storyteller creates a world. Some people even argue that a powerful storyteller can call their created world into being simply through the force of the tale."

"You're saying that someone just made me up?" Aragorn said, looking slightly amused.

"It's a theory," Sar said, grinning. "The other theory is that when a storyteller is inspired, they're actually tapping into something that exists somewhere, and channelling what they see into a tale. In that place you were just in, a university professor was marking papers one day when, out of nowhere, he wrote down 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit'. Who's to say he wasn't inspired by the Valar to write that down?"

"And why would the Valar want to do something like that?" Aragorn asked, looking more intrigued than affronted.

Sar leaned forward, resting her hands in the middle of the table. "Do you think what you're doing is important? Important enough that maybe people who have never had to live through it ought to know about it so that they can recognize the warning signs and understand what might need to be done?"

Aragorn was silent for a long moment. "Storytelling," he finally sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"It's what people do," Sar shrugged. "It's what we've always done. Doesn't make any of us any less real."

"And your story?" Aragorn asked.

"My story went on without me a long time ago. Now I just meddle in everyone else's," Sar grinned.

Re: Tell me a story...

Aragorn frowned. "Wait, if I'm part of a story that you've read, then you know what happens to me." He leaned closer and whispered, "You know what happens to Frodo and the Ring."

Kathye bit her lip and looked over and Sar. "Well, that's where the paradox surrounding the vortex comes in. In the story I read, Aragorn never visted a Bakery filled with strange women."

From somewhere else in the Bakery came a faint "Hey!"

Kathye continued. "We don't know if you, when you go back, will continue the story as we've read it, or if you will take the story in a new direction."

Aragorn leaned back, considering.

"The longer I stay here, the more different my story will become."

Kathye nodded.

"Then I should return. How do I do that?"

Kathye looked down at the table. "Um... I'm not exactly sure. The vortex was malfunctioning when it brought you here. I have been thinking about it, and I think we need to combine the mystical and the scientific. I need to work up the calculations, but I think a week from Friday will be our best chance."

Aragorn raised an eyebrow. "What's a week from Friday?"

"Samhain."

Re: Re: Tell me a story...

Sar perked up. "Oh, that's a good idea!"

"What's Samhain?" Aragorn asked.

"It marks the end of the old year, and the beginning of the new one," Sar said, then paused, "at least, in some calendars it does. In mine, anyway. Other people use the end of December. But even those people admit that Samhain's a night when doors open, and walls between worlds grow thin."

"Even if some of them admit it by cowering under their covers until it's all over," Kathye added pleasantly.

"Where were you when the vortex got you, Aragorn?" Sar asked.

"We had been resting in Lothlorien, why?"

Sar and Kathye looked at each other, with identical frowns. "Galadriel's going to know he didn't just wander off," Kathye said.

"You have the setting recorded that brought him here, right?"

"It should be in the computer's memory somewhere."

"So, couldn't you put the vortex to that setting, but in reverse? That might get him back to when he left," Sar said.

Kathye rubbed her eyes. "I suppose it's worth a shot. I have till Samhain to figure out the calculations, at any rate."

Sar nodded, then looked up at Aragorn. "One more thing," she said. "When you go back, I'm going with you."

"What?" said Aragorn, caught off-guard.

"You can't interfere!" Kathye practically hissed.

"I know that," Sar said calmly. "But I can get back here from there. And once I go there, I can get back there from here. Which means that if Aragorn should want to come visit again after things settle down at home..." Sar waved her hands vaguely.

"Ah," said Kathye, as understanding dawned.

Visiting
Name: Two Visitors
Date Posted: Oct 21, 03 - 6:04 PM

The door of the time-vortex opened and two people got out.

"Jed, I promise we'll only be staying for a while." the woman said, trying to put the man at ease.

"That's what you said last time." the man countered in a unmistakable American accent. "On top of that - Heyes'll probably be worried sick... Where are we anyway?"

"The Nottingham Bakery."

"Nottingham, USA?"

"Er... no... Nottingham, England."

"ENGLAND?!"

"Er... yes. Remember that book Heyes read a couple of weeks ago?"

"Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry and the black riders of death?"

"Nooo... the other one. On Robin Hood."

Slowly it started to dawn on the man.

"We're in Nottingham, England?"

The woman nodded.

"In a time... what's it called - vortex?"

The woman nodded again, getting slightly nervous as the man regarded her suspiciously and demanded,

"What year?"

"Late ..."

The man bend forward, unable to understand what the woman said in a muffled voice.

"Late thirteenth century."

Jeds reply was like a gunshot:

"WHAT?!"

"Well there's no need to get all up worked up..."

"Waddaya mean?! An hour ago I was in Wyoming, the year was 1890 and..."

"You'll think much clearer on a full stomach." the woman interrupted cheerfully. "Let's see if Kathye has some pie."

"Now don't just walk away... Did you say pie?"

Rina smiles. Jed could always be caught with pie. A good thing the sherriffs and posses never found out. She nodded and without waiting for a reply, she headed for the stairs.

"Better make it blueberry!" Jed grumbled as he came after her.

“I hope that no one noticed how long we were gone,” Annie was saying to Nasir as they strolled hand in hand up to the Bakery’s back door. “Think Aragorn, Brice, and Leandra have left already?”

Nasir shook his head.

“You know, it’s a good thing you never heard from Rina since that day,” Annie said to him with a sly grin.

Nasir frowned.

“Well, you’ll never have to explain to her about me, now, will you?”

Nasir smiled.

Not paying attention to where she was going, Annie walked into the kitchen…and straight into a stranger holding a plate of apple pie.

As the remains of the pie slithered down the front of his shirt and trousers, Annie began to apologise profusely.

“I am so sorry! I didn’t see you!” she said, trying her best to not make the mess any worse. “Here let me help!”

“It’s not your fault, ma’am,” the stranger said politely.

“But your clothes…”

“Nevermind the clothes, ma’am,” he said with a grin. “I’ve had worse things than apple pie thrown on them.” Annie frowned. “Erm…what I meant was…”

“What he means is that he’s more worried about the pie than his clothes,” said a female voice from behind him.

The stranger stepped aside to reveal a tall, blond woman. “Hi, Nas,” she said.

Annie frowned, and looked at Nasir.

The smile was gone from his face.

Re: Visiting

Nasir appeared as calm as ever, but Rina saw he was upset and inwardly she wished she had handled this differently. Especially when she saw Jeds face. Being a gunslinger, he had faced down many men and his face showed nothing. But she knew better. Eventhough she had explained to him about Nasir, she left out some details. The two swords on his back and two knives on his chest to name but one.

Instinctively Jed moved between Rina and Nasir, earning him a "For crying out loud!"-glare from Rina.
She pushed a wet cloth in his hands.

"Here, why don't you go clean yourself."
"But..." he glared at Nasir as he would at an opponent in a gunfight.
"Jed... please."

"Nasir, what's happening? Who are they?"

For a moment, everyone had forgotten about Annie, who stared confused at the scene before her. Rina noticed how Annie approached Nasir and felt that they were more than just friends. This pleased her, as it would make things a little easier.

"Forgive me, I didn't mean to be rude. Jed, may I introduce to you: Nasir and ... I'm sorry, I don't think we have met before."

"I'm Annie and you are..."

The blonde woman smiled and introduced herself. To Nasir’s surprise, Annie greeted her friendly and there was no animosity between them. Then Rina turned to him and he didn't know what to say. She had a healthy tan and looked as beautiful as he remembered. Rina turned to Annie.

"Would you mind if I borrowed him for a moment?"

"Would you mind if I borrowed him for a moment?"

Annie began to blush, something she hardly ever did. "Erm...you don't need to ask my permission," she replied to Rina. "I'm just ..." Annie gave Nasir a look of uncertainty. "...just a friend." Nasir raised an eyebrow. "Besides, I have to ... erm...see a man about a dog," she said quickly. "Very nice to meet you," she said politely to Jed and Rina. She turned to Nasir. "See you later?"

Nasir nodded, and Annie quickly left the kitchen.

P'mission
Name: Aragorn
Date Posted: Oct 23, 03 - 4:02 PM

Aragorn found Leandra upstairs, listening to Brice and Omar retell the stories about their adventure in Paris.

He grinned. “More storytelling?” he said quietly as he watched Brice’s animated tale of the ‘Awful Tower.’

“Honestly, my lord,” Leandra whispered to Aragorn. “I don’t know whether to believe them or not. It all sounds too incredible to be true.”

“Nanny!” Brice put his hands on his hips in imitation of her when she was upset. “Lookit what I’m saying!”

Leandra grinned. “I’m listening, dear,” she said. “But it’s near time for us to go. Lord Aragorn is here to take us to our new house.”

Brice scowled. “I’m not going. I’m staying here,” he said, firmly crossing his arms. “With my brother.”

Leandra raised her eyebrows. “Your brother?”

Brice nodded. “Omar and me are brothers now,” he said, putting an arm around Omar. “His dad said.”

“Yeah. My dad said,” Omar repeated.

Aragorn grinned. “He did, did he? Well,…” He knelt down to Brice’s level. “I wouldn’t want to be responsible for separating two brothers.” He winked at Leandra. “I suppose you’ll just have to stay here for a while until …”

Brice brightened. “I can stay! Yea!” He clapped his hands in joy.

“Yea!” Omar said in simultaneous agreement.

Aragorn raised a finger. “Until…,” he said firmly enough to recapture their attention. “Until I ask Kionach for her permission.”

“P’mission?”

“Permission.”

Brice frowned with confusion. “But you’re big. You don’t need p’mission.”

Aragorn stood to leave. “Brice, even big people need permission sometimes.”

"No..I don't think it would stay down".

Ferran caught Lynns last words and said with a wink,

"Ariana had the same when she expected Omar."
Lynn looks at him in horror and he quickly adds,

"Of course, it could be an ordinary flu."

Re: Re: Stop the world

"It couldn't be that...could it? It must be the flu". Lynne turned to Patti. "Right?"

Patti felt her forehead, "Well you don't seem to have a fever. How long have you felt like this?"

"It started a couple of days ago. What am I going to tell Daniel? What's he going to say?"

Daniel walked into the kitchen, "Tell me what? Lynne, are you feeling all right? You look a little....pale. Maybe you should lie down, travelling though the time vortex can be tiring."

"I don't need to lie down..I'm ok. Daniel, we need to talk."

"Ok," he said slowly. "Are you sure you're feeling all right?"

"My stomach is just a little upset at the moment."

"Maybe it's something you ate?"

"No, I don't think so" she said looking down at her hands.

"You're not...I mean, you can't be...well, you know...." He waved his hand above his own stomach.

Lynne shrugged her shoulders but didn't look up.

"Are you sure it's not something you ate? I mean, really sure?"

Lynne couldn't stop the tear that escaped. "I'm sorry..."

"Sorry?" Daniel pulled her close and hugged her. "If you are...well, you know, then that's wonderful news! Isn't it?"

He tilted her head and looked in her eyes. "Isn't it?"

Not trusting her voice, she nodded.

"Let's find out for sure first before we both go jumping to conclusions, ok? And if we are, well, we'll just take things as they come." He kissed her lightly. "Everything will be ok. I promise."

Alinora stretched her arms, basked in the sunlight, and looked around the Bakery garden.  With winter just around the corner, it was already frosty and chilly outside, and she was thankful she was wearing one of her warmer cloaks this morning.

Just as she was reaching for her cup of tea, she noticed a man coming out of the baker she didn’t remember seeing before, and wondered what was going on now.

Woof!

Thankful to be out of the uncomfortable situation with Rina and Nasir in the kitchen, Annie went to find Jack. She looked everywhere, but instead of finding him, she found Daniel with his head buried in a book in the back room.

"Erm...excuse me," she said quietly, not meaning to disturb him. "You haven't seen Jack, have you?"

Daniel looked up from his book. "Not recently. Why?" he frowned.

"Well...," Annie started. "I thought he might know where I could get a dog."

"A dog?"

"A puppy, actually."

Daniel shook his head with confusion. "Why do you want a puppy?"

"Oh, it's not for me," Annie said quickly. "Kionach asked me if I knew where I could get one."

"Kionach?" Daniel snorted. "I never figured her to be much of a 'dog' person."

Annie giggled at the thought. "Me neither. But I don't think she wants it for herself."

"Ah. For Brice?"

Annie nodded. "That's why I was looking for Jack. He's a dog person. I figured that he might know where I could get one." Annie turned to go. "If you see him, will you ask him?"

"Why couldn't I go with him?" Lynne paced back and forth.

Mac stood up and put his hands on her shoulders, "You know why."

"But..I might not be..."

"Are you still sick in the morning? Better safe than sorry."

"Listen...did you hear that? It's the vortex.." Lynne bolted to the back room.

A few minutes later they came into the kitchen. "Thank god, she's been driving us crazy" Patti laughed.

"What? Why?" Daniel looked at her.

"I still think I should have come with you."

"Lynne..we discussed it. Anyway, I'm back and we can find out for sure." he said handing her the bag.

Lynne looked inside and started to laugh. "Daniel, we only need one...not 6."

"Well, I wasn't sure which one was the best. So I got two of each." He reached into the bag. "This one only takes five minutes. This one has a pink line. This one has a blue cross. And this one...." He studied the packet. "I'm not sure what this one does."

Lynne hugged him. "You are wonderful. You know that?"

Daniel says, "Well? Which one do you want to try first? Blue cross, pink line, or Must-read-book-of-instructions-inside?"

"The blue and pink. Daniel...why is your backpack moving?

"Moving?" He hurriedly closed the pack. "Just something I picked up."

"Daniel..is that a..."

"It is, and no, it's not for us," he said. "But he is really cute." He opened the pack for Lynne to peek inside.

"Daniel...that looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog"

"Erm...well the man at the shop said he was a spaniel. Said he wouldn't get much bigger than this. Then again, I'm not a expert on dogs. Daniel held up the pup and examined him. "He does have rather large feet though."

Lynne laughed, "Daniel...they grow from 25 to 27½ inches in height and can weigh about 150pounds. So, if the puppy isn't for us, who's *she* for?"

"Annie. Well, Kionach. Brice, actually."

"Oh. Well I guess I can still play with her."

"Erm...you know, I never asked Kathye if it was all right to have a dog in the Bakery," said Daniel. "Do you think she'll notice?"

"Oh I think she'll notice this one." Lynne said heading upstairs.

Lynne was sitting on the bed playing with the puppy.

"Lynne, it's been 5 minutes."

She sat for a few more minutes.

"Lynne? Do you want me to check?"

"No, we'll look together."

They each took a strip and looked.

"Mine has a pink line." Daniel said.

Lynne looked at him, her eyes filling with tears. "Mine has a blue cross...Daniel, we're..."

Daniel grabbed her "having a baby". He said, spinning around.

Trick or Treat?
Name: Kionach
Date Posted: Oct 28, 03 - 5:54 PM

Kionach looked out the window and watched Aragorn dismount from his horse and speak to Ronan outside by the woodpile. She gazed at his dagger laying on the table, then took a deep breath before going out to meet him.

"Come to say 'good bye?'" she asked him slowly.

"Actually, I came to ask you a favour," Aragorn said.

She sighed. "If this is about Brice wanting to stay ...,"

"He's happy there. And perfectly safe," Aragorn added.

"I know, but...." She glanced at Ronan and bit her lip. "Can we talk inside?" she asked Aragorn.

Aragorn shrugged at Ronan, then followed Kionach inside the mill house.

Once inside, Kionach said, "I don't mind Brice staying at the Bakery. But ...."

Aragorn frowned. "But what?"

Kionach paused. "Kathye's going to want some kind of compensation to keep him. And I...I can't afford it." She looked around the room. "I took a loan from the Sheriff for most of this."

"But I thought ..."

"He gave it to me?" She snorted. "Not hardly."

"I think Kathye would understand," said Aragorn. "I haven't paid her money for staying there."

"You've compensated her in other ways. Besides, I don't want charity." She paused. "I'll think about it. Fair enough?"

"Fair enough."

"So, when are you leaving?" she asked solemnly.

"Friday."

"Oh. Of course. Samhain," she said. "All manner of strange things happen on that night."

"Sar and Kathye said as much."

"It's true," she said. "I happened that night."

Aragorn nodded as he remembered. "Last day of October. Your birthday. I remember."

"Well, guess I should say good bye to you now," she said sadly. "It's not likely you'll be back this way."

"Will you not come to the Bakery to see me off?"

"I don't know," she said hesitantly, looking down at her belly. "I can't hide this anymore."

"You know, Kathye did mention that people sometimes dress in disguises on Samhain."

"Are you any good at making up disguises?"

Aragorn grinned. "We shall soon find out."

*she sat on her bed, she couldn't wait for halloween, Samhain. Hopefully she would see Will again. Maybe... no, that was just too much to ask for. She hadn't seen him in a while, even though Nasir seemed to be at the bakery all the time lately. She sighed*

Oh well, I guess I knew all along that this would happen. I suppose he's found somebody a little closer to Sherwood, hmm?

*she talks to her pillow, and smiles slightly as she picks something up through Nan*

Oh, that's wonderful news.. I'm happy for them both. I'm sure they'll be very happy.

*she continues talking to the pillow, then flops over and rests her head on it*

Calculations
Name: Kathye
Date Posted: Oct 28, 03 - 7:49 PM

Kathye shuffled out of the back room, carrying an empty coffee cup and a pile of papers. She mumbled to herself as she read the papers.

"Ah, yes, I forgot to multiply by Hertzolt's constant. That will account for the drift in the readings. But, should I go with an integral transform for the wavefront calculations, or feed the empirical data into an interpolation program? Hmmm...."

She glanced up, noticing some new people in the Bakery, who she waved at vaguely. A puppy jumped up on her. She put the papers down on the table and scratched his head.

"Now, when did we get a puppy? Not necessarily a bad idea to have a watchdog, given how often people break in. I'm sure that Nan will have him trained in no time."

Kathye continued on toward the coffee pot. Lynne and Daniel stepped in her way.

"Kathye, we have terrific news! We're going to have a baby!"

Kathye stared at them briefly, processing the information. "Congratulations!"

Then she edged around them, heading back towards the coffee pot. "Is there something in the water around here?" she muttered (because she's a bit more observant than some people would think).

Finally she made it to the coffee pot. She poured herself a cup, then looked at the cup, put it down on the counter, and walked away with the rest of the pot of coffee instead.

After picking up her papers, she turned back to everyone. "You'll probably have to tell me all this again after I finish figuring out how to get Aragorn home. I promise, I'll be much more enthusiastic later."

Then she shuffled out of the room again.

Boo!

"She's in there!" Brice whispered to Omar. The two boys were poised just outside of the music room door with Brice peering through the keyhole. "I see her!"

"Lemme see!" said Omar, pushing Brice away. "I see her, too!"

"What's she doing?"

"I fink she's prackassing."

"Prackassing?" Brice frowned as he thought about why Sar would be practicing, then his face lit up. "Maybe... there's gonna be a party!"

"Yea!" said Omar.

"Hey! Let's see if we can scare her!" Brice said bossily, as he started to put on one of the masks Leandra had helped the boys make earlier that day.

Omar hesitated. "My mum says it's not nice to scare people."

"But how do we know if these are scary masks?" came Brice's muffled voice from behind the mask.

Omar giggled. "You're funny!"

"I'm not funny," said Brice. "I'm a scary goblin! Here, put yours on."

Omar put his mask on and it was Brice's turn to laugh.

"Rrraaargh!" said Omar, in the scariest voice he could muster. "I'm a scary wolf!"

"I'm not scared," said Brice. "I don't think these masks are scary enough."

The music stopped.

"Shhh!" Brice commanded. "I think she's coming!"

The two boys knelt down on either side of the door. "Ready?" said Brice. "One,...two,...."

AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!

Sar let out the most blood-curdling scream the boys had ever heard.

Brice quickly pulled up his mask. "It's just us!" he cried.

Omar took his time removing his mask, an impressed expression on his face. "Now that was scary," he said, then giggled.

"Never mind!" Sar called cheerfully down the hallway to anyone who might be coming to investigate. She looked down at the pair of boys. "Having a rehearsal, are we?"

The boys followed her into the music room. "What's a rehearsal?" Brice asked.

"It's another word for practicing," Sar explained.

"Yeah!" said Omar. "Prackassing, like you!"

"How would you like to practice being the audience for the new song I'm working on?" Sar asked, sitting down picking up her harp. She checked the strings as the boys scrambled to sit on the floor in front of her.

Farmer John wandered back
And when he reached the pumpkin patch
began to speak
Said 'the weather's getting colder
Summer's over and it's almost Hallowe'en
That's the day
The reason you were raised
Everything about your life will change'

'You will have eyes to see
And for that night you'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
Remember, that candle shines
For only the briefest time
In a Jack-o-Lantern's,
A Jack-o-Lantern's heart'

The pumpkins held a meeting then
Some were very apprehensive and afraid
'Could this really happen to us
What could be the meaning?'
Is what they were saying
'This is home
It's all we've ever known'
Then one bold, outspoken pumpkin spoke:

Said 'I don't need eyes to see
Sounds like a lie to me
I like it just fine here in John's garden
Remember, that candle shines
For only the briefest time
In a Jack-o-Lantern's
A Jack-o-Lantern's heart'

There is much to ask
And ponder in the pumpkin patch
When imposing old October
Shows up at last

Then a pumpkin from the farther end
Who had been silent up till then
Over the commotion said
'What would you rather have, my friend?
A chance to shine, or die here on the vine
The better way seems very plain to me'

'You will have eyes to see
And for that night you 'll be
A bright lamp burning in the darkness
Maybe that candle shines
For only the briefest time
In a Jack-o-Lantern's heart
Oh, but one goblin's smile
Should make it all worthwhile
You know, you might even see the starlight
Knowing that time is brief
Makes it that much more sweet
You have a Jack-o-Lantern's
A Jack-o-Lantern's heart'

Name: Jed Curry and Mac

Jed walked into the garden and found himself a nice, quiet spot out of the wind. He tried to comprehend what was happening as he took in his surroundings.
That Nasir-fella… Rina sure had left out some details when she described him – the man carried enough weapons to start his own hardware-store. He thought about it some more, and came to the conclusion that this place sure hosted some strange people.

“Hi, want some coffee?” Jed was startled, people rarely took him by surprise. The man before him looked at him questioningly as he handed over the coffee.

“Thanks.” Jed replied, wondering why the man was staring at him.

“Hey – you’re American.” the man said delighted, offering his hand. “I’m MacGyver. From the late 20th century”

Late 20th century?! Oh yeah… vortex. MacGyver looked decent enough, so Jed shook his hand and introduced himself.

“Jed Curry. Late 19th century.”

Mac took a better look at the man sitting in front of him. He wore a red shirt and Henleys, grey trousers and boots. On his hip was a belt that helt a gun, strapped to his leg. From his great collection of old Western movies, Mac knew gunslingers did this so they could draw faster. Hang on a minute…

“You said your name was Jed Curry?”

Jed froze. Usually when people addressed him in that tone, it meant that trouble was on the way.

“You wouldn’t happen to be born in Kansas now, would you?”

“Might.” Jed wondered where this was leading to.

“You happen to know a guy called Hannibal Heyes?”

"Maybe. You know him?"

"Not personally - but I read all the dime novels!" Mac declared enthusiastically.

Brice and Omar had been peering through the window at the strangers outside and were just heading down to investigate them when they were distracted by the sound of ripping paper from underneath a table in the front room.

Omar squatted down. "Look!" said Omar. "A doggy!"

The puppy looked up from chewing on one of Kathye's papers and wagged her tail.

From inside the kitchen, the boys heard Leandra discovering the wake from Nan's encounter with the puppy. "Oh! What a mess!" the boys heard her cry. "All of Kathye's important papers!"

"Hey! That's one of Kathye's impotent papers!" said Brice. He grabbed the paper and tried to pull it away from the pup, which the puppy took as an invitation to play tug-o-war. "Give me that!" Brice grunted as he pulled harder. Suddenly, the paper ripped in two, causing Brice to tumble into Omar and knock over a chair.

"Brice!" Leandra shouted, hearing them fall. "Come here!"

Brice sheepishly peeked through the door. "Yes?"

"Look at this mess!" Leandra said, stacking up Kathye's math papers. "Didn't I tell you not to play rough in the house?"

"Yes, but...."

"And what's that in your hand?"

Brice handed her the crinkled bit of paper.

"This is one of Kathye's papers." She sighed. "If you keep this up, young man, there will be no party for you tomorrow, understand?"

Brice drew in a shocked breath. "But...I didn't do it! The dog did!"

"What dog?"

"In there," he said, pointing to the front room.

Leandra peeked through the doorway to look, but Omar and the puppy were gone. "Honestly, Brice, I don't know what's gotten into you these days...running off and getting lost, scaring people in the hall, telling stories about imaginary dogs...."

"But..."

"You misbehave one more time and there will be no party, no treats, just straight to your room and to bed!" She handed him Kathye's papers. "Now you take these to Miss Kathye and say you're sorry."

"But..."

"Now!"

Brice sighed and reluctantly went to find Kathye. "There was too a dog," he grumbled.

Oh deer, oh dear
Name: Ronan
Date Posted: Oct 29, 03 - 2:35 AM

Will, Robin, Tuck, Much and Little John approached the Dirk & Dram distillery carrying a fresh carcass of venison strapped across two poles.

Ronan looked up from chopping wood. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?"

"Poachers," Robin said smiling.

"Poachers?" Ronan shook his head and frowned mockingly. "Tsk, tsk! And not a forester in sight! The Sheriff and Gisburne really should be more vigilant." He smiled and heartily shook Robin's hand. "It's good to see you, my friends."

"Should I just hang it in the usual shed?" John asked Ronan about the deer.

"There's kegs of cider in there now," said Ronan. "But I expect there's room for it."

Tuck pointed to a horse tied near the corner of the mill. "Whose horse?"

"Aragorn's," said Ronan. "He's inside with Kionach. He's been in there a long time. Doing what, I don't know," he added dryly.

Robin patted Ronan on the back. "Well, let's find out, shall we?"

As they approached, they heard voices drifting through the slightly opened window.

"Aragorn, this isn't going to work," Kionach said.

"Yes, it will," Aragorn soothed. "Just stay still."

Ronan's hand paused on the door handle.

"Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

Aragorn laughed. "I have done this before, you know."

"On a pregnant woman?"

"Well, no," he chuckled. "But the principal's the same. Lean forward."

"Why?"

"Lean forward," Aragorn said more urgently.

Ronan raised his eyebrows and exchanged a "what-are-they-doing" look with Robin.

"Oh dear," Tuck voiced quietly.

"Lean forward," Aragorn said more urgently.

Kionach looked at him, then at the 'costume' he was fitting on her, then at the sewing needle in his right hand. He had gone to a lot of trouble trying to disguise her as a plump old peasant. Of course, her costuming prospects were limited being six and a half months pregnant. She sighed. "I'm going to lose my balance and fall."

"No, you won't. I've got you." He tightened his left hand grip on the belt that was holding the heavily padded cushions around her waist and hips. "Now, lean forward. A little more... a little more. That's it."

She twitched uncomfortably. "Ow!" she said, as she felt the needle pierce her skin.

"Sorry. I told you to stay still."

"You told me to lean forward."

"And stay still."

"This isn't a very comfortable position, you know."

"I'll be finished soon," he said, concentrating on stitching the cushions together. "Just stay still."

"Are you sure about this?"

"Trust me." He pulled her back up to a standing position, put down the needle, and smoothed the rough woolen 'skirt' (which an hour before had been a blanket) over the cushions. "Now turn around." He rubbed his chin and looked at her. "Hmm. Not bad. Wait...lift up your skirt a bit in the front."

"Like this?"

"Perfect," he said. "Now, let me just tuck this up under here and.... There, how does that feel?"

"A bit strange, but comfortable enough."

Suddenly, Ronan burst through the door. "Leave her alone!" he yelled as he launched himself at Aragorn, felling them both to the floor.

"Ronan!" Kionach moved to pull him away. "What are you doing?!"

Ronan released his hold on Aragorn as he suddenly realised that things were not as he had imagined. "I thought he was...that you were...that you and he were...." Ronan stood up and offered a hand to Aragorn to pull him up from the floor. "Forgive me. From outside it sounded like you and she were...were...." He began to blush.

"Were what?" Kionach asked him.

"What happened to you?" Ronan asked instead. He pointed to her ragged looking clothing. "Why are you dressed like...like..."

"Like a fat peasant? It's my disguise," she said. "So I can go to Nottingham on Friday without anyone knowing that it's me. Just because you lot know I'm with child, doesn't mean everyone does."

"Ah," said Tuck. "Like the Sheriff?"

"For one," she said flatly. "So, what did you think we were doing?" she asked Ronan.

Ronan uncomfortably cleared his throat. "I thought you were..., well...it sounded like...like he was, well...t-taking advantage of you," he stammered.

Kionach frowned in thought for a moment, then said, "Oh, honestly!" before pushing past him and going outside.

"Great," said Ronan, plopping himself dejectedly in the nearest chair. "Now she's mad at me."

"No, she's not," said Aragorn, brushing himself off. "I'll talk to her."

"Aragorn, I am really sorry about..."

Aragorn smiled. "Don't worry about it. Could have happened to anyone."

Will cleared his throat. "Especially Kionach," he said. "Same sort of thing happened with Pam."

"And Meg," John added. "And..."

"I get the picture," Aragorn said dismissively. "Since you're here, I should tell you that I'm leaving on Friday. I would imagine there might be a party at the..."

"We'll be there!" said Tuck, rubbing his belly.

Aragorn left, finding Kionach out by his horse.

"Ronan thinks you're mad at him."

"I'll fix it with him," she said. "Thank you. For everything."

He kissed her forehead. "See you on Friday?"

She nodded. "Friday."

And Aragorn rode back to the Bakery.

"If we're going to Nottingham, shouldn't we wear disguises as well?" Tuck asked Robin as they sat with Ronan 'sampling' his latest batch of whisky.

"I suppose it couldn't hurt," said Robin. "What would you go as?"

"Hmm...I don't know," Tuck replied.

"We've got costumes left over from the Lammas fair," suggested Much.

"Yeah, but Gisburne would remember those," said Will.

"Hey, don't we have some of those masks left?" suggested John. "You know, the ones the 'Hounds of Lucifer' were wearing?"

"Yes, I believe we do," said Tuck.

Ronan frowned. "Hounds of Lucifer?"

"Long story," said Will.

"And before my time," said Robin. "Loxley would be able to tell you the whole story. But the masks sound like good disguises. They are scary, anyway."

"Sorted then," said Tuck. He raised his cup in a toast. "Here's to the second riding of the 'Hounds'!"

"Ow-ow-ooooowwww!" They all howled like dogs and laughed.

meanwhile, out in the yard...
Name: Sar
Date Posted: Oct 29, 03 - 5:03 PM

Kathye rubbed at her eyes, and decided she needed fresh air to clear her head after all that math. She wandered out onto the back deck, and watched Sar and Aragorn sparring in the yard.

"What are you going to do now that I know all your dirty tricks?" Aragorn was asking, as he nimbly dodged Sar's attempts.

Sar stopped, and stood up straight. "Oh no. Whatever shall I do?" she deadpanned. Leaning forward and setting her shoulders, she motioned with her hands, "Bring it on, Ranger Boy!"

Aragorn glared. "Ranger Boy?  Ranger Boy??"

As the pair grappled, Kathye saw two figures walk silently around the corner of the Bakery and into the yard. Grinning, she nodded her head when one of them motioned her to be silent.

With a muffled slap Aragorn's back hit the ground, and Sar quickly scrambled to sit on top of him. "Didn't know about that one, did you?"

"You know, I always wondered about you two."

Hearing the voice, Sar sprang to her feet and turned around. "You're back!" she shrieked, launching herself at Quimoe.

"I'm home," he said, wrapping his arms around her.

"I'm Kathye!" Kathye said brightly, approaching the Quimoe's companion, a dark-haired girl who was tactfully ignoring the reunion.

"My name is Jessop," the girl said shyly. "Quimoe said you might have a room where I could stay for a while? I can work for my keep," she quickly added. Glancing around, she leaned forward and said quietly, "Quimoe thought you could maybe use someone with a knack for electronic equipment?"

"Quimoe is a wise man," Kathye said, putting an arm around the girl, "and one with impeccable timing. Come on inside, I've got a room right across the hall from his. We'll have you settled in in no time."

Sar relinquished her hold on Quimoe long enough for Aragorn to get a welcoming hug in. "It's good to see you well, my friend," he said.

"Thank you for looking out for her," Quimoe said, pulling Sar close to his side again. "And for everything else, as well."

Aragorn reached out and grasped Quimoe's shoulder. "You'd have done the same for me."

"Oh!" Sar sniffled. "That's just..." her voice caught in her throat, and she gestured vaguely by way of completing the sentence.

"Why don't we all go inside?" Aragorn suggested.

"After you," Quimoe said, and the three of them went into the bakery.

Re: meanwhile, out in the yard... Name: Brice Date Posted: Oct 30, 03 - 7:46 AM Message: Brice didn't have to look far for Kathye as she, Sar, Aragorn and the 'strangers' were walking toward him.

He marched out, deliberately stopping in front of Kathye, blocking her path.

"Hello, Brice," said Kathye. "This is our new guest, Jessop. She's going to be staying here for a while."

"Hello, Brice," Jessop said, kneeling down to his level. "Nice to meet you."

Brice didn't reply, but rather gave both of the 'strangers' a suspicious look. Then he let out an overdramatic sigh and held up the loose pile of crinkled, wrinkled, and ripped papers to Kathye. "I'm supposed to give you these and say I'm sorry," he recited.

Kathye took the papers and sighed at their damaged condition. "Erm... thank you."

"But I'm not sorry, 'cause I didn't do it," he added resolutely. He turned abruptly to go.

"Brice, come here," said Aragorn.

Brice did as he was asked.

"It's not polite to ignore someone who was greeting you," said Aragorn, giving a glance to Jessop. "Now say 'hello' to Jessop."

"But she's a stranger," Brice whispered to Aragorn. "And I'm not supposed to talk to strangers. Nanny Leandra said if I misbehave one more time, then no party and no treats and I hafta go to bed."

"You can talk to her," said Arargorn, grinning. "You can tell Leandra I said. Now say 'hello'."

Brice turned back to Jessop. "Hello," he said quietly.

"And do you remember Quimoe?" Aragorn asked him.

Brice frowned as he eyed Quimoe over, then slowly shook his head. "He doesn't look very scary," he said.

Aragorn frowned. "Why should he look scary?"

Brice shrugged. "I dunno. Just because." He fidgeted uncomfortably. "Can I go now?"

"Yes, you can go now," said Aragorn.

Brice ran off to find Omar and the trouble-causing puppy.

Another wolfshead
Name: Annie
Date Posted: Oct 30, 03 - 3:23 AM

Annie had looked everywhere for Jack to ask him about finding a puppy for Kionach, but he was no where to be found. Giving up, she had decided to go to the market to stock up the kitchen for the party.

"Let's see...carrots, turnips, leeks, eggs, butter, honey, milk,..." she went through her mental list out loud as she checked her basket. "We've got apples and cabbages in the garden. That just leaves some kind of meat."

She went over to the butcher's stand, made her purchases, and was just on her way back to the Bakery when she felt something tug on her basket from behind.

"Hey!" She turned around to see a point-eared black puppy, hanging from the edge of her basket, his mouth firmly closed around a link of sausage that had been hanging out over the rim. "Where did you come from?" she asked, picking up the squirming pup. The puppy licked her face. "Well, aren't you friendly," she chuckled.

"'Ere! 'E's mine!" said a gruff voice. She turned to see a haggard, bearded man with a wolf-skin cloak who quickly ripped the pup from her grasp. The pup yelped in pain.

"Hey!" Annie frowned. "You can't treat him like that! He's just a puppy!"

"Yeah?" the man growled through rotted teeth. "I'll do what I likes wif 'em! 'E's mine!" he said, as he harshly tied a rope around the puppy's neck. "On yer way, wench!" He waved a dismissive hand and began to drag the animal away.

"Wait!" Annie emptied out the last few coins from her purse. "I'll buy him from you!"

The man halted in mid step.

Annie quickly counted the coins in her hand. "A schilling and tuppance."

The man raised his bushy eyebrows. "A schilling and tuppance for a ....?" He laughed cruelly. "Done!" He grabbed the money from her hand and shoved the end of the rope lead in its place.

As she watched the man walk away, the puppy licked her face in gratitude.

"Yeah, yeah, you're welcome" she said, trying to avoid his tongue. "I just hope you're worth it."

She tucked the pup under her arm, picked up her basket and headed back to the Bakery.

Leandra blanched as she saw what Annie was carrying under her arm. "Where did you get that?"

Annie set down the basket of food on the table and held up her pup. "At the market. Isn't he adorable?"

"It's a wolf!" said Leandra.

Annie frowned. "Nonsense! He's just a black puppy with pointed ears." The pup licked her face. "And a very active tongue," she added, trying to wipe her cheek with her sleeve.

"Annie, dear, that's a wolf pup," said Leandra. "I'm sure of it."

"He's not a wolf," said Annie defensively. "And besides, he's not for me. He's for Kionach. Well, Brice really."

"For Brice?!" Leandra blanched again. "And here I thought he was making up that story about seeing a dog in the Bakery!"

Annie frowned. "But I haven't seen Brice yet. I only just got back from the market. He couldn't have seen him yet."

"Either way," said Leandra, "I can guarantee Kionach will not take a wolf pup in as a pet for Brice."

"I'm telling you he's not a wolf," said Annie.

"He is," said Leandra.

"He is not!" Annie replied back.

"He is."

"He is not!"

"Well, if you don't believe me, ask someone else," said Leandra. "But if that's a dog, then I'm the Queen of Sheba."

Alinora had just come into the kitchen to hear the last bit of discussion between Annie and Leandra.
"Um, I don't mean to be rude Annie," she began reaching out to stroke the fur of the puppy,
"but it sure looks like a wolf pup to me. Not that there is anything wrong with that," she added as the little one licked her hand roughly, " I will be the last one to comment on keeping unusual pets."

Annie looked at Alinora, then at the pup, then back at Alinora. "You think he's a wolf, too?" She sighed. "But he's so friendly, and soft, and...."

"And wild!" said Leandra. "You'd best take him back where you found him."

Annie bit her lip. "That might be easier said than done," she said, remembering the cruel man she had bought the pup from. "Are you sure he's a wolf? I mean, couldn't he be just a 'wolf-like' breed of dog?"

Alinora and Leandra exchanged glances. "He's a wolf," they said together.

"No offence, but I think I'll need another opinion," said Annie hopefully. "He's too cute to be a wolf. Aren't you, boy?" She scratched the pup behind his ears.

"well, if they're getting dogs, I'm leaving. No need for a watch cat when they have two watch dogs."

*unsettled and feeling unloved, she hadn't seen ME! in forever, the small tabby prowls through town then decides to go and live in Wickham*

Alinora called out to Nan as best as she could. "Don't you dare leave Nan," she said, "we need you around here you know. Besides, one cat, in my opinion, is worth more than ten dogs!" "Besides," she added, " ME! will be looking for you when she comes back...." Alinora didn't know if Nan had heard her not, but she really hoped that she had.

Annie slumped down in the chair. "Apparently Nan thinks he's a wolf, too. I didn't mean to make her run away," she said sadly.

"She'll be back," said Leandra. "Cats are smart, you know. Besides, I found Kathye's recipe for fish cookies. I'm making a batch for Nan for the party."

Annie sighed as she held up the pup to her face. "What am I going to do with you if Kionach doesn't take you in?" she said to him. The pup licked her cheek. "Wolf or no, you can't stay here with Nan. That's for sure."

"What do you mean, 'wolf or no?'" said Leandra. "I'm telling you, Annie, that's a wolf!"

"Well, I still say he's a dog," said Annie, unconvinced. She went into the pantry and put the pup inside an empty crate. "Now you be a good dog and stay there," she said to him. "We've got cooking to do."

Sar wandered into the kitchen carrying an empty rucksack. "What's with the wolf in the crate?" she asked.

"I give up!" Annie said, throwing her hands in the air while Leandra chuckled.

"Running away from home?" Leandra asked, as Sar stuffed bread and cheese into her pack.

"Quimoe and I are going on a picnic in the woods," Sar explained, grabbing the last of a batch of gingerbread cookies. "See you later!" she waved, heading out the door.

Searching for Jed
Name: Rina
Date Posted: Oct 30, 03 - 12:58 PM

Rina walked into the garden - glad that things worked out so well with Nasir. Of course, he had been shocked at her news that she was not staying, but would be travelling with Jed back to Wyoming.
She smiled as she remembered trying to explain Nasir that there was a whole continent in the west called America.
She was nearly run over by a little dog, followed by two little boys. The smallest boy, with definite Saracen features, was addressed by...
"Ah-choo!"
The man looked at her, not recognizing her straight away. Then his face broke into a wide grin.
"Rina!"
They embraced and talked for a moment, before Rina excused herself. She had to find Jed - she knew he was dying to get back to Heyes or get sick worrying.
Or perhaps... they could spend Halloween here... if they got back to Wyoming on the same day they left...

Re: Searching for Jed and the puppy
Name: Omar and Brice

Brice had finally found Omar and they both had chased then captured the troublesome puppy. They were carrying it back to the Bakery, when they ran into another 'stranger'.

"Hi! Whatchya got there?" Jed said, bending down to their level.

Brice didn't say anything, but Omar said, "A doggy!"

"A doggy, huh?" Jed picked up the puppy and pet it. "Does your doggy have a name?" Jed asked.

The boys shook their heads.

"What? No name?" Jed scratched his head. "What about you? Do you have a name?"

Omar nodded. "Omar."

"Well, pleasure to meet you Omar. I'm Jed," Jed said, shaking Omar's tiny hand. He looked at Brice. "And what about you? Do you have a name?"

Brice nodded, but didn't speak. "He's Brice," Omar said in his stead.

"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?"

Brice shook his head. "I'm not allowed to talk to strangers," he said, then quickly covered his mouth with his hand.

"Ah," nodded Jed. "Good rule, that. You never can be too careful about strangers."

"What's that?" Omar pointed to Jed's gun.

"This? Erm...well, this is a gun."

"It's shiny," said Omar.

"And it's something that little boys should never touch," said Jed. "Never, ever. It's very dangerous."

"What's it do?" asked Omar in awe.

"Erm...it's a.... "

"It is a weapon to defend yourself," Rina said, as came up behind Jed. "Just like your uncle has."

Omar frowned. "It's not very big," he commented.

"But it's a magic weapon," Rina continued, ignoring Jed's surprised and confused face.

"Magic? How?" Brice said, totally intrigued, then quickly covered his mouth again, realising he had talked again to a stranger.

She took a bullet out of Jed’s gunbelt and showed it to Omar. "You have to put these in, see? And then it does the same like arrows. Just like Robin Hood."

Omar looked at the small object in awe.

"Magic?!" Jed whispered to Rina.

"Well, do you want to explain to a medieval toddler how a Colt works?" she challenged.

"Ah...ehh..." Jed mumbled, as if to say "point taken".

"You know - they always said Kid Curry and Hannibal Heyes were modern day Robin Hoods," Mac said, still sitting across from Jed. "You only stole from the rich..."

"And kept the money!" Rina added dryly.

"Hey now - that ain't fair! We spent enough of it!" Jed protested.

"You shoot bad men?" Omar asked curiously.

A bit uncomfortable, Jed replied honestly, "Sometimes."

"Not as good as uncle hossie!" Omar stated boldly, loyal as ever to his uncle.

The puppy began to squirm so Jed handed it back to Brice. "You'd best think up a name for that pup, mind. A dog's no good without a name."

Heading to the Bakery
Name: Kionach
Date Posted: Oct 30, 03 - 4:58 PM

"Ready?" Kionach asked Ronan.

"Just about," he said, pulling the cover over the cart and tying it down over the load.

"How many jugs of cider did you pack?"

"Two kegs worth."

"And whisky?"

"Three and a half. Too much for a party, if you ask me."

"Well, I didn't ask you," she said, struggling to climb into the cart in her cumbersome 'plump peasant' disguise. "Kathye can have the excess as part of Brice's keep."

Ronan raised his eyebrows. "You've decided to let him stay?"

"If Kathye will keep him," she said. "Besides, Aragorn said he'd be perfectly safe there."

Ronan rolled his eyes. "Oh, well, if Aragorn said....," he muttered.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing." Ronan climbed into the cart and they started off.

"You don't like Aragorn?"

"I like him fine," replied Ronan. "I just don't like how you let him tell you what to do, that's all."

"He doesn't tell me what to do!"

"Aye, he does," said Ronan. "If he asked you to jump, you'd ask how high. Oh, you'd ask why first, but, in the end, you'd jump."

"I would not!"

Ronan snorted. "If you say so."

"I do."

"Well, if you ask me, which you won't," he added quickly, "I'd say that you regard him as kin. Like an uncle or older brother. Don't think he regards you that way, but that's how I see it."

Kionach frowned. For a while, they rode in silence.

"Ronan? How do you think he regards me?"

Ronan thought a moment. "As a charge."

"A burden?"

"More like... a responsibility."

"Oh." She clutched Aragorn's dagger in its sheath which she had laying in her lap. "So, you think he'll be glad to be rid of me," she said slowly.

"I didn't say that," said Ronan. "Look, Aragorn's not abandoning you. He's just doing what he has to do. Besides," he grinned, "you'll still have me after he's gone."

Kionach smiled weakly. "If it wasn't for Leandra, would you still stay?"

"Of course."

"Why?"

"Why do you think?"

"I don't know. That's why I'm asking."

Ronan chuckled. "If you can't figure it out, why don't you ask Aragorn? He knows."

Kathye put her knife down and examined her pumpkin again. She looked over at the cat who sat posing for her.

"I think we're done, Nan. Come on over and look!"
This was the pumpkin I carved this year

"Oooh!" Brice said in awe as he gazed at the pumpkin. "What's that?!" he asked Kathye.

"Oooh! What's that?" repeated Omar.

"It's a Jack-o-Lantern," Kathye said proudly.

Brice gave it a thoughtful stare. "It doesn' t look like Jack," he said finally.

"It's not supposed to," said Kathye. "It's just what we call a pumpkin after we carve faces in them."

"Can I make one?"

"Me, too! Me, too!" chimed Omar.

Re: Re: Jack O Lantern!

"Sure, we have a couple more pumpkins."

Kathye put a pumpkin each in front of the boys and handed them markers.

"Draw the faces that you want on these, then one of the adults will help you cut them out."

Samhain
Name: Kathye
Date Posted: Oct 31, 03 - 4:03 PM

Kathye and Jessop came out of the back room and found Aragorn in the backyard.

"Everything is set. The optimal time will be midnight." Kathye said.

Aragorn looked down at his hands. "What would happen if I don't go tonight?"

Kathye's eyes grew large. "Well, first I think it would be another half-year before we could even think about trying again. I'm also a bit worried about you losing touch with reality."

He frowned a bit at that.

Kathye sighed with exasperation. "I mean, losing touch with your own reality. People like Jack or Jed come from a reality very close to this one. The vortex can handle the slight changes needed to get them home. But, middle earth is very different from my earth. The longer you stay here, the more attached you become to this reality. We need to get you back before the connection you have to your own story is lost."

He nodded. He looked up to see the Wolfsheads on the opposite side of the yard.

"I have to go talk to someone," he said, then left the two women.

Robin was listening with the others to Daniel telling everyone the good news about Lynne when Aragorn tapped him on the shoulder.

"Robin, can I ask a favour of you?"

"Of course," Robin said, with a slight frown.

Aragorn led him away just out of earshot of the others.

"I'd like you to look after Kionach while I'm gone," he said.

Robin raised his eyebrows. "Look after her? She seems quite capable of looking after herself."

"'Seems' is the appropriate word," Aragorn said. "She needs someone to... advise her, now and again."

"Advise?" Robin snorted. "And what makes you think she will listen to me?"

"If I tell her I put her in your charge, she'll listen to you."

"Why not put her in Ronan's charge?" asked Robin. "He stays with her."

"At her employ," Aragorn said. "She will not take advice from him. But she will take it from a superior."

Robin nodded as he understood. "And you're worried that after you're gone, she might turn to the Sheriff for advice."

"She's already headed in that direction," Aragorn said, frowning.

"And you fear for her and the boy?"

"And for Kathye and the others. Kionach's knowledge of the Bakery could be quite disastrous if she were persuaded to ..."

"I understand," said Robin. "Don't worry. I'll look after her."

Re: Re: Samhain

Leandra heard voices outside the front window and opened the door to see Ronan and an unfamiliar woman approaching.

"I'm sorry!" Ronan said, laughing.

"No, you're not!"

"Well? What did you want me to say?"

"I don't know," the woman said with exasperation. "But you didn't have to tell the guard that I was your 'auld wifey!'"

"Kionach?" Leandra squinted her eyes. "What on earth are you wearing?"

"It's her 'auld wifey' disguise that Aragorn made for her," Ronan said with a huge grin.

Kionach turned on him. "Ronan MacInnes, if you say that again I'll...."

"You'll what?"

"Stop it, the both of you!" Leandra scolded. "I swear, you weren't this bad as bairns!"

"All right, all right," Ronan laughed, holding his hands up in surrender. "I give."

"A wise move," Kionach retorted.

"Oh?"

"Honestly!" Leandra crossed her arms and shook her head and walked inside.

Inside the door, Kionach removed her cumbersome peasant garb that covered her own dress and tossed it at Ronan. "'Auld wifey,' indeed!"

Ronan gave her a grin that said more than words could say.

She stuck her tongue out at him in reply as she followed Leandra into the kitchen.

"Where's Kathye?" Kionach asked her.

"Outside," said Leandra, pulling a pan of gingerbread from the oven.

Kionach started toward the door and stopped in the open doorway. "And who's that with her?"

Leandra looked up and out the window. "A new guest," said Leandra. "I don't remember her name."

"Neither do I," said Kionach quietly. She noticed Aragorn talking with Robin and decided to go see him first.

Gather 'round the fire
Name: Kathye
Date Posted: Oct 31, 03 - 5:12 PM

"Can I have everyone's attention?"

Everyone turned to look at Kathye, who was holding a torch and standing in front of the pile of wood that would soon become the bonfire.

"Tonight is Aragorn's last night with us. At least, until he returns." Kathye yelped as Sar kicked her ankle.

"So, I'd like to sing a song for him."

Kathye nodded to Sar, who struck a chord for her.

"Gather around as the sun’s going down,
Ending this wilderness day.
Search for the kindling and firewood,
Before the last light slips away.
We will sing as the ancient ones sang long ago,
As out with our voices our spirits will flow.
Though darkness and silence surround us our faces will glow.
Gather ‘round the fire"

"Look into the flames as they flicker and die,
And it feels like you travel through time.
To ancestral meetings of primitive minds,
A union of all humankind.
Are we dancing for stars up above you so bright?
Are we speaking a language known only by light?
Are we fighting the battle eternal with darkness tonight?
Gather ‘round the fire
Gather ‘round the fire "

"No matter how distant your travels may be,
A fire will welcome you home.
And there will always be a place for you here,
No matter how far you may roam."

Kathye smiled toward Aragorn, her eyes tearing up slightly.

"History and mystery, and hope and despair.
Bringer of peace as into you we stare.
Smoldering ashes and smoke curling into the air.
Gather ‘round the fire
Gather ‘round, Gather ‘round, Gather ‘round the fire"

Then she turned and thrust the torch into the bonfire.

"Let the party begin!"

"That has got to be one of the biggest bonfires I've ever seen," Annie said as she sat down beside Lynne. "I can feel the heat even way over here."

"Uh huh," said Lynne. "Me, too."

Annie looked closer at her. "Are you feeling all right?"

"No, not really," said Lynne, swallowing hard. "It'll pass."

"Stay put," said Annie. "I'll be right back."

In a few moments, Annie returned with a steaming cup of tea, a small bottle, and a bit of cloth.

"Here," she said, handing Lynne the cup. "Drink that. It will settle your stomach."

Lynne took a sip. "Mint?"

"That's the main ingredient, yes."

"What's in the bottle?"

Annie put the cloth over the open bottle and let it absorb some of the liquid inside. "When you feel queasy, put this near your nose and sniff it."

Lynne sniffed it. "Lavender?"

"And some other things."

The two of them sat there watching the fire, while Lynne drank the tea and periodically held the cloth close to her face. After a while, Annie asked, "Feeling any better?"

Re: Gather 'round the fire

Ronan was sipping his second cup of whisky as he watched Kionach talk with Aragorn from afar.

"Good batch, Ronan," said Tuck, patting him on the shoulders.

"Hmm? Oh, aye," he said absently, not taking his eyes off her. "One of my better ones."

"Why don't you tell her?" said Tuck.

"Hmm?"

"I said, 'why don't you tell her?'"

"Tell her what?"

"That you love her," said Tuck.

Ronan frowned as he watched Kionach hug Aragorn. He snorted in contempt. "Would it change anything if I did?"

"It certainly won't change anything if you don't."

Ronan's eyebrows raised when he saw Kionach give Aragorn back his dagger, then he frowned again when it appeared that Aragorn was refusing it.

"He's giving her a token?" Ronan said out loud.

"No," said Tuck. "She's convinced him to take it back."

Ronan took another sip from his cup. "She still has fits, you know," he said to Tuck. "He shouldn't have given it to her in the first place."

"I'm sure he felt he was doing the right thing," said Tuck.

"The right thing would have been to leave her in Scotland," said Ronan. "Where she belongs."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I'm sorry," said Ronan. "I didn't mean to offend. It's just...." He paused, then turned to Tuck. "She has no kin here, no ties, and he had no business bringing her here. Now, she depends too much on him. Who is she going to turn to when he's gone? Me? No! It'll be the Sheriff, I reckon. And that will be her ruin!" He swallowed what was left in his cup and walked away in a huff.

Robin, seeing Ronan leave in anger, came over to ask Tuck what had happened. Robin sighed, then told Tuck about Aragorn's favour. "I'll go and talk to Ronan," said Robin.

"Leave him be for now," said Tuck. "He's angry. And he might take it out on you."

"You're right, Tuck," said Robin. "I'll talk to him when he's sober."

Time to go
Name: Kathye
Date Posted: Oct 31, 03 - 7:11 PM

Near to midnight, Aragorn, Kathye, Sar, Quimoe and Jessop slipped away from the party.

Kathye and Jessop turned the vortex on, Kathye double checking the numbers displayed, and Jessop checking the feel of the vortex in the Force. They nodded to each other.

Everyone stood quietly for a moment.

Then it was time for goodbyes. When Aragorn came to Kathye, she wrapped her arms around him and said, "I think I'll miss you most of all, Tinman."

Kathye laughed at his confused look. "Sorry, cultural reference for a culture you don't know. Just... keep yourself safe, OK?"

He raised an eyebrow at her. "Indeed, Mr. Underhill."

Kathye glared at Sar, who just shrugged and grinned.

"And Aragorn, you should know..." Sar shook her head, but Kathye continued. "Just remember there's always hope. Come back to us soon."

Then Aragorn and Sar disappeared through the Vortex.

Re: Time to go

When the world righted itself, Sar and Aragorn found themselves among the mallorn trees of Lothlorien.

"Well, this certainly looks familiar," Aragorn said, looking around.

A figure appeared from behind a tree, and Sar mutely tugged Aragorn's sleeve. Seeing Galadriel, Aragorn stood straighter and bowed his head. Sar was too stunned to do anything but stare.

"You have returned," Galadriel said, her expression inscrutable.

"I do not know by what power I was taken, but it was by the aid of this woman and her friends that I am again within these borders," Aragorn explained. "This is Sar."

Galadriel shifted her gazed to Sar, and her eyes narrowed. "You are not of Middle Earth."

"No, my lady," Sar said, trying very hard not to stammer. "My land was lost long ago. I mostly... wander... now," she finished lamely. She thought she saw Galadriel soften a little at this, so she took a deep breath and plowed ahead. "My lady? I'm sorry that Aragorn went missing and I know that he's needed here and I can't stay because this isn't my story but I was hoping that maybe I might come visit and I mean that in a strictly platonic way of course and only once things here aren't quite so crazy-"

Her stream of words was interrupted by a good-natured nudge in the ribs from Aragorn. "Right. Sorry," she said to Aragorn before facing Galadriel again. "Might I have permission to return?"

Galadriel said something in elvish to Aragorn. His reply was unintelligible to Sar, but it sounded pretty, whatever it was.

"You may return," Galadriel said at last, "but all in good time."

"Yes, my lady. Thank you," Sar said. She turned to Aragorn. "I guess this is it."

"I suppose it is," Aragorn said, before he was tackled in a farewell hug.

"Thank you for everything," Sar said.

"Keep working on those left side blocks," Aragorn advised, smiling.

Sar laughed, and quickly wiped her eye. She thought for a moment, then put her hand on his chest. "You're a good man, Aragorn, son of Arathorn. Trust in that." She took a step back, nodded politely to Galadriel, and vanished.
