Comments: I'm looking for information on my Barbe kin. The original Barbee was Juana and her brother Francisco. Juana married Jose Alvarez prior to moving to Amelia Island in FL which is now San Fernandina, FL. The family moved inland in 1819 after troops destroyed all their holdings and belongings. They settled in Starke/Bradford County, FL. We have extensive information on the Alvarez side, but are interested in finding out more about Francisco and Juana and where they were from originally. One theory is they were from Asturias, Spain, another theory is that they were Italian and the name was "Spanished" and ended up being Barbe. Any information would be helpful. We have Juana Barbe's birthyear as 1794/5. First listed in FL as of 1790. A possible relative Joseph Barbee helped Jose & Juana's children with a probate document that wa signed by three of their children in November 1847. After that, no further mention of the name anywhere. Any information would be helpful.

Comments: My grandfather was Charles Gilson Barb'e amd stowed away on a ship from England when he was fifteen. He came to find his father in America. He had a family in South Louisiana and in Oklahoma, we believe. This was before he came to East Texas and had a family here. Some of our family in Okla. spell their name with two es. He died around l922 and is buried here in Shelby County. I could find out more if needed from family members.
