Beard coloring

Keeping your beard looking its best

You've grown a great beard. Naturally, you want your beard to look its best. Yes, a gray beard can look terrific. And the look of a beard in transition to gray may be very flattering. Or it may not. If the gray appears in uneven splotches, you may not care for how it looks. Or maybe you feel it makes you look much older than your age, especially if your beard is turning gray ahead of your scalp hair. If you don't like the looks of the gray creeping into your beard, you may decide to color it. You may think of it as just another dimension of beard grooming. The decision to color is yours. Only you can decide which look is best for you.

Coloring your beard

When it comes to coloring your beard, you basically have two options:

  • color it yourself
  • have it colored professionally
If you feel like experimenting, you might want to try coloring your beard yourself. If you are less adventurous, or just prefer to have someone else handle the task, have a professional do the coloring. For assistance in selecting a professional, ask for a recommendation from a friend or relative.

If you choose to do the job yourself, you will be faced with selecting an appropriate coloring product. Several commercial beard and mustache coloring products are available, but they offer very limited color choices. Women's hair-coloring products offer a much wider variety of choices, but may not be suitable for use on facial hair. In any case, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Beard coloring survey

I welcome assistance from readers in developing this page. I have received numerous requests for a page on coloring beards, but have delayed because I do not know enough to render sufficient expert advice. Given that those who color their beards do not typically talk about it much, little information on the subject is shared. If you have any knowledge that you could share, I welcome it and will use it to further develop the information on this page. Therefore, I have put together a short survey on beard coloring below. If you have any experience in beard coloring, please take a few moments to participate in this beard coloring survey. Or send me an email message.
