The Belize River Valley area is one of the most historic and beautiful areas of Belize - boasting serene river sceneries with gently sloping banks - pristine tropical rain forest areas. It is centrally positioned in the country and is approximately 30 miles from Belize City with a long tradition of subsistence farming and forestry work especially in mahogany. Its 3500 residents are comprised mainly of the Creole ethnic group who are the descendants of a mixture between the African slaves and Europeans, and who share a proud tradition and history of work in the earlier periods of forestry and mahogany extraction.
Belize, like many other developing countries is facing increased pressures on the environment. While the environment movement is vibrant and growing, environmental consciousness varies from community to community and poor communities generally play very limited roles in this movement. At the same time the absence of skills causes many communities to miss many opportunities that arise in such environmental relates fields such as eco-tourism and agro-forestry.
New visions, values, models and resources are required to promote people-centered development with sustainable production, land, and food security and to provide opportunities for participation of communities in the march toward progress.
Belize River Valley Programs
Since 1994 BELRIV has organized self-financed, holistic, decentralized, planning, training, production and research programs and prepared a development agenda for the area.
BELRIV has implemented projects in health, sustainable production, provided information, environmental education and has made micro credit available for sustainable activity from pooled savings, and promoted cultural retrieval and capacity building of local leadership and organization.
