REFORESTATION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST
DRUGS AND POVERTY
This is a Universal Issue!
BELRIV - Nominates
For UNEP SASAKAWA 2000 PRIZE.
Henry C. Fairweather
Henry Fairweather's work highlights the need for a new policy framework and support, to encourage widespread community reforestation - and to provide genuine economic alternatives in the fight against poverty and drugs. Belriv will continue to advocate at home and abroad to achieve this goal - in order that poor communities can grow themselves out of poverty.
Henry C. Fairweather expresses his gratitude for the widespread recognition of his efforts and for the announcements of the government of Belize and its intention to vigorously pursue reforestation. He implores all Belizeans to join in the movement for reforestation of mahogany and other hardwoods. He believes that if Belizeans take action now that our economic future will be bright and poverty will be removed.
We are dedicated to helping all interested Belizean communities to undertake reforestation projects. It is the best way that we can honor Henry C. Fairweather - towards a national movement for reforestation.
By his actions in replanting Belize's mahogany, Henry Fairweather has now planted himself firmly into the 21st century and has improved dramatically the prospects for our communities to move forward. It is our hope that those who share a similar vision can create the enabling policies that will build on Henry Fairweather's efforts, and facilitate the reforestation of mahogany and other hardwoods to benefit all the people of Belize and especially our poor.

Henry C. Fairweather for UNEP SASAKAWA 2000 PRIZE.
Since June 1999, BELRIV has conducted a two pronged publicity campaign at home and abroad to create awareness on the sterling achievements of Henry C. Fairweather in the planting of more than 94,000 Mahogany plants, and on our joint efforts to transfer this knowledge to communities.
This has stirred great interest and many statements have been received from eminent persons at home and abroad calling for recognition of the work of Henry C. Fairweather.
Since January BELRIV has polled international contacts and many of our international colleagues are convinced that Mr. Fairweather is an ideal candidate for the UNEP SASAKAWA PRIZE 2000 and have written in support. As a result, BELRIV nominated Mr. Fairweather for the prestigious Sasakawa Prize 2000 of UN Environmental Program in late March. This formal nomination must be followed up by an appropriate campaign for lobbying and enhanced publicity.
A steering committee has been formalized to campaign actively for recognition for Henry C. Fairweather. The steering committee includes representatives of the Fairweather family, concerned citizens from various disciplines and representation from abroad.
It is our sincere hope - that as people become more aware, many others will join and the campaign will be broadened to present a truly unified, national (and international effort) to give Henry C. Fairweather the recognition that he so justly deserves both at home and abroad.
