Discussion of the BMG Engineering, Inc. Home Page
The BMG Engineering, Inc Web pages were designed with the
following goals. Many overlap with others. They are expanded a later
in the discussion.
- Show respect for the visitor
- Nice appearance
- Make it easy to navigate
- Encourage people to return from time to time
- Create a word-of-mouth promotion of the site
- Thorough, complete, and accurate representation of the
products
- Creates a "warm, fuzzy feeling" about BMG
- Make it easy to contact us
*********************************
Respect for the Visitor
This is the number one priority. It permeates all other aspects.
Here are some specific factors.
- Clear grouping of information in "digestible sized"
packages.
- Provided alternate text for images for text-only
browsers.
- Kept to HTML 2.0 compatible code to avoid strange
interpretations by older browsers.
- Answer his questions before he asks them. (Not completely
possible, but we try!)
Nice Appearance
- A simple, attractive, and unifying head on the top of each
page, to show the visitor that he is still on the RDF home pages,
and has not linked to another site.
- Avoid a distracting background, poor contrast, or color
selections which could make reading more difficult. Again, respect
for the visitor.
- Without time-consuming page loads (where practical).
Easy Navigation
- Intra-page links.
- Crosslinking between related articles .
- Tell the visitor a bit about what is on the other end of a
link to help him decide if he really is interested in going there.
Saves time and avoids frustration.
- Not forcing the visitor to wait for a lot of images to load on
a page that he may find he really isn't interested in after all.
When he links to a page, he can command image loads of what he may
be interested in. We give the viewer the control. That's
respect.
- If the page REQUIRES graphics to make it meaningful, we
automatically load them, but warn the reader before he links to
that page.
- Where it might be desired, provide click-ons to download
images or plain text, which can then be printed, examined
off-line, or imported into a local Application.
Encourage Visitors to Return Often.
- Put in text indicating a link to be added in the future. It is
a teaser to bring them back from time to time. (It also helps
organize the progressive and orderly development of the page.)
- Make it easy to see what is new since they last visited. This
is done with our Change Log page. After the top page opens, they
can immediately link to the Change Log, and see what significant
changes have been made and on what dates, and then directly link
from the Log to a new item they are interested in.
- Provide so much content that it is not likely to all be
absorbed during one visit.
Create a word-of-mouth Promotion of the Site
"Hey, I found this really great Web page last night . .
."
- Be unique, and therefore stand out.
- Educate the reader. This is a demonstration of pure service to
the reader.
- Provide free really useful content.
- Establish this set of pages as the most important and
informative resource on the WWW for Radio Direction Finding.
Representation of the Products
Introduce and describe our product thoroughly . It is a product
which needs a lot of explanation.
- What it does in plain English
- What can it be used for
- Explain how it works
- Pictures
- Specs
- How it is used
- Prices and ordering information
"Warm, Fuzzy Feeling" about BMG
This must be done with absolute honesty.
- The entire page should demonstrate our quality, competency,
service, and passion for the subject.
- Show people how SuperDF can actually do the things we claim!
We have feedback from other forms of promotion that some people
simply don't believe the product works as well as we claim!
- The Tutorials demonstrate that service to the customer is a
major goal and a strength of our company.
- Many visitors have received poor docs from other companies;
tell why ours is better. (We regularly receive very positive
comments on our documentation.)
Contact Information
Provide a footer on every page (that has significant contents)
giving
- Contact information
- E-mail option
- Page date
- URL address of the home page.
Don't force the visitor to navigate to the top page for this
information. (We encourage people to distribute this information to
friends and associates, and we want the contact information on every
useful page.)
Page Promotion
After the page is up, it must be well promoted to get the word out
to those you wish to reach. This is an operation unique to each page
/ customer group.
