INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing Battling The Bulge. If you have ever battled the bulge yourself, you
know how frustrating dieting can be. More often than not, your losses are fleeting, and your gains
are never ending. Even if you manage to lose those unwanted pounds, the monkey is never off
your back. A donut looms around every corner.
Battling The Bulge is a game that is both fun and instructive. The keys to a successful diet are:
knowledge, discipline and will power. The keys to winning Battling The Bulge are the same --
knowledge, discipline and will power. Battling The Bulge is a fun way to gain the knowledge you
need to begin your life long battle with your bulge. If you can win this game, you can win your
personal battle.
The important thing to remember is that, essentially, dieting is a mental activity. It's a contest
between will power and indulgence, discipline and culinary anarchy, knowledge and blissful
ignorance. It's your head against your hips. May the best part of you win. Let the battle begin.
OBJECTIVE
Be the first player to lose all their excess weight.
SETUP
1 ) Place the various game cards on the game board in their appropriate spots.
2) Each player takes a game piece and places it on the Doctor's Office space which is the starting
space on the board.
3) Each player takes one WILL POWER card.
4) The players must decide how much weight they wish to lose. (Four players losing ten pounds
each will take about two hours to complete the game) Whatever weight the group decides, each
player will start the game with that amount of pounds and calories in their pudge pool. For
instance, in a ten-pound game each player will take: one FIVE POUND card, four ONE POUND
cards, and 3500 calories (one pound = 3500 calories). A total of ten pounds.
5) Choose a starting player.
THE PLAY
The starting player rolls the die and advances his/her pawn the number of spaces indicated on the
die. Movement around the board is always clockwise. One complete trip around the board is
equal to a week of dieting. Depending on the space they land on, the following instructions apply:
EXERCISE: The exercise spaces indicate various forms of exercise used to help control weight.
When you land on one of these spaces, take an EXERCISE CARD. You may then choose to
perform the exercise described on the card or the one on the space.
Next roll the die to determine how long you exercised. A one on the die equals 10 minutes of
exercise, a two is 20 minutes, a three is 30 minutes, etc. The calories burned are presented on the
EXERCISE CARD, or if you choose the board exercise, the calories burned are on the back of
the Weigh In Question Booklet. Deduct that amount of calories from your excess weight. IF
YOU LAND ON THE "SPA" SPACE, YOU MAY ONLY PERFORM THE EXERCISE ON
THE CARD
After you have completed the exercise, keep the card until you land on or pass the Doctor's Office
space.
FOOD GROUP: When you land on a Food Group space, take a FOOD GROUP CARD. Hold
these cards until you get a set of all four food groups: Dairy, Meats, Grains and Veggie. When
you land on or pass the Doctor's Office space, turn in your complete set and deduct two pounds
from your pudge pool. Duplicates of any one food group should be retained and applied to future
sets.
BINGE: When you land on a Binge Space, ON YOUR NEXT TURN you will either go on a
binge or avoid the binge by turning in one WILL POWER CARD. If you do not have a WILL
POWER CARD, you must go on the binge. If you have a WILL POWER CARD, you may turn it
in or save it for later, but if you choose to save it, you must go on the binge. Turn it in by
returning it to the WILL POWER CARD pile on the game board.
You go on a binge by moving your piece into the binge arc. Roll the die as many times as
necessary to transverse the entire arc. Each time you stop in the arc take as many BINGE
CARDS as are indicated on the space. When you have finished binging, add up all the calories on
your accumulated BINGE CARDS and add that total to your pudge pool. Return the BINGE
CARDS to the bottom of the BINGE CARD pile. Your turn is over.
NOTE, if you land on the Binge space just before the Doctor's Office space and must go on the
binge, you will miss the Doctor's Office space. You must go around the board again and land on
or pass the Doctor's Office space in order to turn in your EXERCISE or FOOD GROUP
CARDS.
WEIGH IN: When you land on a Weigh In space, take a WEIGH IN CARD. The number on the
back of the card corresponds to one of the sixty questions in the Weigh In Question Booklet.
Another player will turn to the appropriate question and ask you to choose either the Will Power,
1000 Calorie or 300 Calorie part of the question.
If you answer the part you have chosen correctly, take a WILL POWER CARD or deduct either
1000 or 300 calories from your pudge pool depending on the part of the question selected. Return
the WEIGH IN CARD to the bottom of the pile. Your turn is complete.
If you fail to answer correctly, no WILL POWER CARDS are taken or calories deducted. Return
the card to the pile. Your turn is complete. Try your luck at some sample questions.
CRASH DIET: If you land on the Crash Diet space, you may, on your next turn, go on a crash
diet on simply continue around the board. If you go on a crash diet, follow the directions printed
on each of the crash diet spaces.
PICNIC/PARTY/DINE OUT: When you land on a Picnic/ Party/Dine Out space, you can invite
one or all the players to take a BINGE CARD. The number of players you can invite is indicated
on the space. If they have a WILL POWER CARD, they can use it to avoid taking the BINGE
CARD. If they take the BINGE CARD, they must add the calories on the card to their pudge
pool.
The player that lands on the space must also take a BINGE CARD or use a WILL POWER
CARD to avoid taking the BINGE CARD.
FAD DIET: When you land on the FAD Diet space, You may turn in a WILL POWER CARD
and deduct one pound from your pudge pool. If you do not have or do not wish to use a WILL
POWER CARD, simply wait till your next turn and continue the game.
DOCTOR'S OFFICE: When you land on or pass the Doctor's Office space, you must turn in all
the EXERCISE CARDS you accumulated as you went around the board. If the number of cards
turned in is three or more, you may take one WILL POWER CARD.
If you have obtained a set of all four (Dairy, Meats, Veggie and Grains) of the FOOD GROUP
CARDS, you may turn that set in and deduct two pounds from your pudge pool. Save any
duplicate FOOD GROUP CARDS to use in making future sets. Turning in a set means returning
it to the food group card stack on the board.
MISCELLANEOUS: The spaces such as Water Weight Loss or Plateau are self explanatory. Just
follow the instructions printed in the space.
That's all there is to it! The first one to lose all the excess weight in their pudge pool is the winner.
Good luck and good dieting.
FOOTNOTE
Battling The Bulge is based on accurate and tested dietary principles. The calorie content of the
BINGE CARDS is accurate to the nearest ten calories. The calories burned per minute of exercise
is also based on data reported in various nutritional and fitness publications and are accurate to
the nearest ten calories.
Questions in the Weigh In Booklet are based on the latest nutritional information provided in the
reference's list in the bibliography below. The Will Power part of the question is the hardest to
answer, the 1000 calorie is next hardest and the 300 calories is easiest. As you play the game and
become familiar with the question and their answers you will also be gaining the knowledge to
complete a nutritionally sound and successful diet. (Additional Q&A booklet will be compiled and
published at future dates.)
As indicated in the game, always start your diet with a visit to your doctor's office. And as your
diet progresses, periodic visits to your doctor is another good idea. In our game, one trip around
the board approximates a week. Exercising three times a week earns you a will power card.
Maintaining a well-balanced diet of all four food groups earns you a two pound weigh loss.
Losing two pounds a week is a prudent diet objective. It takes will power to resist the urge to go
on binges. So you can see how Battling The Bulge combines all the elements (knowledge,
discipline and will power) of a good diet to make you a winner.
So have fun and remember, if just one pound is lost, we have done our jobs. Good luck and good
dieting.
