Commentary

This is an example of a barren mare showing nearly continuous estrus once she arrives at the breeding farm. Although an inexperienced breeder will waste stallion services breeding her during the transition portion of her cycle, it's not an unusual experience and is not usually indicative of serious abnormality. These transition heats are often anovulatory; therefore, there is little chance that the mare will conceive if bred. Once the mare has been exposed to an artificial increasing light regime or naturally occurring light, the mare's cycles tend to shorten and the intensity will change. Other significant changes include more definite periods of diestrus (not in heat) and these periods will become more consistent in length (14-16 days). Once the mare settles down and starts cycling in a more natural rhythm, her fertility will often be similar to that of other "normal" mares. These erratic mares are frustrating for both owners who fret that the farm is not breeding the mare when she's in heat and running up expenses and the farm owners who don't want to waste limited stallion services and resources breeding mares that aren't ovulating.
