ISLAND REPERTORY COMPANY
Belfry Centre Studio theatre
Victoria B.C.
ISLAND REPERTORY COMPANY will present the Victoria premier of Canadian playwright Kim Morrisseys play, Clever as Paint: The Rossettis in Love at the Belfry Arts Centre Studio Theatre for four performances only, opening Wednesday, April 4th and closing Saturday, April 7th. Clever as Paint: The Rossettis in Love is a twistedly satiric yet poetic examination of the pre-Raphaelite painters, Gabriel Rossetti, his model, mistress and then wife, Elizabeth Siddal, and their friend, poet and publisher William Morris.
Set in 1860s London, this macabre tale depicts the troubled marriage of Siddal and Rossetti, with Siddal struggling to become recognized as an artist in her own right while married to one of the renowned artists, and renowned philanderers, of the time. After Siddals suicide, Rossetti buries his love poems in her coffin and continues to paint her. Seven years later he digs her up again to get the poems, publishing them for money and fame. Strangely beautiful, Clever as Paint offers fresh insights into the boundaries between art, craft, grief, inspiration, and despair.
Clever as Paint is directed by Richard Stille, designed by Margaret Lopatecki (sets) and Chris Oliver (lights), stage managed by Chad Laidlaw and features Shelley Dusterbeck as Elizabeth Siddal, Brodie Stephenson as Gabriel Rossetti, and David McPherson as William Morris. Showtimes are at 8 pm and tickets ($16/$14) can be reserved through the Belfry box office, 385-6815.
