Road Bike Routes |
I doubt that many of you feel road biking is an extreme sport, however there are some aspects of road biking in Mobile that would certainly qualify it as one. First, Mobile is not a bike friendly city. Second, Again, Mobile is not a bike friendly city. Third, there are no established bike lanes. Fourth, few roads in town have any kind of shoulder. You need to be brave to ride on the roads here. Every biker I know has some horror story about being cut off or being grazed by a car...and if you ride long enough, you will probably have a horror story of your own. Please be smart and ride defensively. That is my disclaimer. That said, there are actually some pretty decent roads once you get out of town. They are mostly country roads, but generally there is less traffic. I will try and give each route a safety rating, a traffic rating, a road quality rating, and a final overall rating. These are only opinions, they should be taken with a grain of salt. Many thanks to Mike Thompson and the crew at Cadence 120 for their information on the following routes. Check out their web site at www.cadence120.com for group ride information.
Right now the most active road biking group in the area is the West Florida Wheelmen - They meet regularly 3-4 days a weeks and do rides from 25-65 miles. They are really good riders and are very reliable. I highly reccomend you join their group and check out the group's web site for ride info.
Groups are also meeting in other area's. See the Cadence 120 Web site at www.candence120.com for more information.
If you know of more routes, or if you have updates on these please email me at carotop111@aol.com.The map below is an overview of the area. I apologize if the map seems confusing, it is not meant to to be used for navigation, only to give you a reference for the various routes. There are three regions on the map: Mobile, Spanish Fort, and Fairhope. Routes are first sorted by region and then by distance from highest to lowest, click on the map below to jump to the route or region you are interested in or you can scroll down the page to see them all.

entire day for this ride, and eat lots of pasta the night before. This route

be some traffic on half of the loop. The other half is hardly ever used. There
is usually a group that rides on Tuesday afternoons. They are pretty fast, but
worth chasing.

Description: This is a training loop near
Tillmans corner with good interstate access. You can do as many laps as you
like. If you ride early or after work, there is almost no traffic, but around
lunch and 5:00 there can be some business traffic. There is a 4 lane road with a
median for 3/4 of the loop. There really is no need for such a large road. I
counted 5 cars during the last 1 hour ride there at 5:00. It is very safe, and
fairly flat. A great place to work on technique. There is usually a group that
meets there on Wednesday afternoons at about 4:30 to 5:00pm.
