Comparatives and Superlatives

Big.......Bigger.......Biggest
Read the lesson below and answer the questions

        Adjectives describe nouns.  For example:

This is a small yellow square

This is a big red square:

Small, yellow, big, and red are adjectives.

We can use the comparative form of adjectives to compare two things:

The yellow square is smaller than the red square.
The red square is bigger than the yellow square.

We form the comparatives of short words (one syllable words and some two syllable words) by adding -er   (See the spelling rules below).  We form the comparatives of longer words by adding more before the adjective:
bigger,  smaller               BUT            more beautiful,    more interesting

Spelling rules for comparatives of short words:

Add -er to form the comparative of short (one syllable) words:
small — smaller           old — older

When a word ends in e, just add r:
nice — nicer  white — whiter

When a word ends in a single (1) vowel and a single (1) consonant, double the last consonant   before adding -er.

big — bigger       hot — hotter

When a two syllable word ends in y, change the y to i and add -er.

easy — easier  funny — funnier

A few comparatives are irregular:
good — better bad — worse  far — farther
