| Yes, I like comics. What're you gonna do about it? I'm a particular fan of the X-books produced by Marvel, though as of recently, they've been sucking some serious keister. Perhaps once editorial learns to keep their grubby lil' hands off the writing, the books can once again become a bit more readable. So what books are well worth my money, and which suck? Let's take a peek, shall we? |

| Bar none...one of the best books available. Spider Jerusalem is the most vile, obnoxious, intelligent, and downright loveable characters. Word of advice, though...if he's lookin' at you with a big grin on his face, and his bowel disruptor in hand, run like hell. |
| Another excellent one, but it's always in danger of bein' cancelled. It's not as good as it once was, but they're trying some new things which I am rather interested in checking out. |
The
Adventures of Barry Ween: Boy Genius: An excellent piece of
comedic storytelling. It started off as a three-issue miniseries
for Image, but now ONI press (publishers of the Blair Witch Chronicles
and the Clerks comics) has begun releasing it. Always some good hard
laughs, but not for those easily offended. I highly suggest snagging
a copy of the current run, as well as the reprinted trade paperback of
the initial miniseries from Image. Good art, obnoxious ten year olds,
what's not to love? :)
Lovely illustration by Judd Winick. |

Spawn: Been with it since the beginning. What can I say, I'm a sucker for good art. And it has the occasional good story. Batman: Kate's got me hooked on all the Batman books now. Good art, good stories, kickass character. He's Batman. Young Justice: Another one Kate's got me hooked on. It's all the lil' goombahs from the DC Universe (Robin, Impulse [kinda like a young Flash], Superboy, Wonder Girl, and a few others) Think Superfriends (that cool ol' 70's cartoon) de-aged, and in severe need of ritalin. Planetary: Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan) strikes again. Think "The X-Files" meets the spandex set. X-Books: Finally back on an upswing...more interesting stories, and they've got a stable art team again. Check out Lenil Francis Yu's artwork. That stuff rocks. I'll give y'all a link if I can ever find his page again. Astro City: Good solid storytelling, with some excellent art. Kurt Busiek's had some health problems, so the book hasn't been out in about six months. Always worth picking up if you see it on the shelves. |
