DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT COLLECTION

ITEM NUMBER: 1RK

This is a museum quality collection of rare and unusual thin red shale slabs excavated from an ancient riverbed formation in New Jersey. The shale contains impressions of plants and animals living in the early Triassic geological timeframe (approx. 197 million years old). The impressions contain molds and casts. Some of the impressions are multi-layered sets. Identified footprints are:

  • Grallator
  • Lesiertillian
  • Anchiasauripus
  • Rhynohosauroidos
  • Anomepus
  • Bachtracopus

HOW THEY WERE FORMED This is a simplified model to explain the formation and preservation of dinosaur tracks: (a) a dinosaur's foot impressed in the substrate; (b) the foot is withdrawn, leaving its imprint; (c) the footprint is filled and buried by accumulating sediment; (d) after lithification, the sediments are split open to reveal the original footprint and its filling; (e) the original imprint or natural mould; (f) the footprint filling or natural cast, shown inverted. Reprint from DINOSAUR TRACKS by Mr. Tony Thulborn, Chapman and Hall, 1990
