Obie. Yesterday Caroline swam all of the dogs. Individually, of course! The water temp was 71 F which I consider too cold for man or beast. But Caroline comes from heartier stock than me so she proceeded (with a wet suit of sorts) with the swim lessons. Our dogs have all been in the pool several times but I don't think we ever swam Obie before Marilyn came for him at 8 weeks. He was a little hesitant at first as the picture on the left shows. But, with Caroline's help, he got the hang of it pretty fast (right photos). He went in and out of the pool several times and seemed to be enjoying himself.
I may not swim with Obie but I do wander around the property with him. He loves to explore. A few days ago we were wandering down near the neighbors fence and he saw the Emus and became very alert and interested but did not bark. I managed to get a nice photo of him staring thru the fence.
Riles = 154.0 LB. Lucah = 153.9 Obie = 153.0 Spice = 133 Princess = 126.2 Thumper = 140 Rio = 154 (3/15 weigh-in) Maisie = 133 (3/16 weigh-in) Lily = 151 (3/17 weigh-in) Chaucer = 153 (3/19 weigh-in)
Spice. Along with Spice's weight, Constance and Rob sent some pictures of Spice. She is looking good.
Rio. per Leslie: We had some beautiful weather today so we were out playing in the yard. I have included some photos to share. We have been working on our "standing pretty" and "stay".
Thumper. Ginny stopped by last Monday afternoon and brought Thumper along for Caroline to see. She is looking good per the pictures below. In the far right hand picture you can see Thumper getting in the back of Ginny's SUV using a ramp. The ramp was purchased through one of the Vet catalogs (she told me which one but I forgot). The ramp is 6 feet long and folds in half for storage. I think she said it will support 250 LB. It is much lighter than the wooden ramp I built for use with the motor home. The ramp is particularly useful for getting Mastiffs out of SUVs (or motor homes) without having them jump down. Jumping down can sometimes hurt a shoulder or leg because of the heavy weight of these massive breeds.
Obie. Some mornings Caroline takes the various pups for an exercise walk around the pasture. Usually about 3 laps. The uphill slope at the end of the lap is especially good for building up the dogs rear muscles. The other day she took Obie for his walk and I managed to get a few pics. In the left photo he saw me leaning over the fence to get a picture of him walking with Caroline and decided to run toward me to be petted. The next photo shows him walking sedately downhill with Caroline. She stopped at the bottom of the slope to pose him for me in a nice natural stack. The last photo shows Obie running up the final slope with ease.
Lily. Debi sent us some pictures of Lily. She is a beautiful girl as the photos amply illustrate. In the left 3 photos Lily does look a little bored. When a Mastiff puppy gets bored outside they sometimes do a little digging as shown in the next photo. The last photo shows Lily doing what a Mastiff does best-looking sad.
It has been raining a bit here yesterday and today (about 3.2 inches total per my rain gauge). Late this afternoon the sun came out and with it a nice partial rainbow which I managed to photograph before the clouds closed in again. By the way, for all of the thousands of you out there who have been wondering what the name Atascadero (where we live) means I will finally tell you. The translation is somewhat dependent on who is translating. According to the Chamber of Commerce welcoming brochure the word Atascadero means "Where the waters meet." If you should happen to drop by the Historical Society display you will see that the word Atascadero means "Mudhole". The two translations are sort of similar in meaning but they do tend to evoke different visualizations wouldn't you say.
Rio. Leslie sent us some photos of Rio in mid-March. I particularly like the one of the boy sleeping with Rio.
Chaucer. Jay sent us photos of Chaucer a few days after we got Rio's pix. That is one impressive bone that Chaucer has. I wondered where he buried it? A gorgeous head. Reminds me of Lucah's.
Lily. Here are a couple of pictures of Lily at the Dog Show in Bakersfield. She took Best of Breed in the Puppy Match.
Spice. We received these pictures of Spice from Constance yesterday. I particularly like the one of the "boy" sleeping with the Mastiff. I think that no matter how old we get there is a certain comfort in curling up with our dogs.
Obie. Caroline took Obie home to Marilyn on April 4 th. I managed to get a few shots of him in our backyard that morning before he left. He was a fun dog to have around.
Our Boys. Lucah and Riles still love to romp around together. They also like to roam around our pasture area down near the pond.
