We left for the Specialty on Monday, April 12 with Lucah curled up amongst all the luggage (Caroline won't let me tell you the number of show outfits she took along). We caravaned with Debi who brought both Lily and Toby (MGM Mastiffs). We stayed overnight in Blyth (a small town on the California side of the Calif./Arizona border) at a nice Super8 motel and found a good Mexican restaurant.
We gassed up the next morning and headed for Tucson. The first thing we noticed after crossing into Arizona was that gas prices were about 35 cents a gallon cheaper ($1.90 vs. $2.25)-sigh! As we drove through Phoenix (about 2 hours north of Tucson) I glanced out the side window and there was Ginny in her SUV with Thumper. She had left that morning from a friends house in Valencia (a city north of L.A.). We couldn't have coordinated that meeting if we tried.
We arrived at the motel early afternoon. The motel complex surrounded very spacious grounds. The grounds were good-the rooms and facilities were a bit rundown as the motel was under ownership change. We managed to get 3 adjacent ground floor rooms. Leslie (with Rio) arrived later and ended up with a 2nd floor room. Actually it turned out to be a nice location overlooking the show ring. Rio had no trouble with the stairs and enjoyed watching the activities from the balcony. Leslie brought her pop-up canopy which we set up outside our room-that was the gathering place for "Team Comstock"
MCOA National Specialty. The Mastiff Club of America has a National Specialty every year. The event is usually in May and occurs in different locations each year. This year's event was held in Tucson, Arizona and was moved up to April 13-18 to avoid the potential for very hot weather. (Next year the Specialty will be in Indiana.)
A Specialty consists of several events in addition to the usual AKC Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, Best of Breed Competition. There are Sweepstakes events for dogs 18 months old or less. These events feature cash prizes. (Years ago we won $1.80 with Clancy.) There is Obedience Competition, Agility, Carting, and testing for Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Therapy Dog (TDI) certification.
It wasn't all work for the pups. Early each morning when it was cool the dogs would got some playtime.
Breeders Cup. The first event we competed in was the Breeders Cup on Thursday. In this event the breeder enters three dogs that he/she has bred. Caroline entered Lucah, Lily and Thumper. The judge then evaluates the set of three against the other entered sets of three. The left photo is of the practice session in the morning before the event. The right photo is of the three Comstock pups in the ring. Unfortunately we didn't win anything.
Tournament of Mastiffs. Thursday evening was the Tournament of Mastiffs. This event is open only to MCOA members so that Debi and Leslie weren't eligible. In this competition the individual Mastiffs are evaluated by 3 Judges who compare notes to select the winner. The winners are announced at the Banquet Saturday evening. Once again we didn't win. But Lucah and Thumper showed well.
The Tournament started at about 6 PM with the males showing first. The light was still good so that I got some decent photos of Lucah. By the time the bitches entered the ring it was dark and some very strong portable lights were being used. The lighting was such that I couldn't get any decent photos of Thumper. The dogs were too far away for my flash to be effective and with the flash shut off the exposure time was so long that most of the pictures were blurred. (I didn't bring my tri-pod.) The rightmost photo of Thumper was the best of the lot.
Bred-by-Exhibitor. Official showing began on Friday with the Dog Classes (i.e., males in Show parlance). The Bitch Classes were scheduled for Saturday and the Best of Breed class on Sunday. Caroline showed Lucah in the Bred-by-Exhibitor Class. She was assisted by Debi, Leslie and Ginny in their "Team Comstock" Tee-shirts designed by Leslie (she is in Auto Advertising). It was an impressive class of eleven with some very nice Mastiffs showing. Lucah took a Fourth Place. He looked good! After leaving the ring Caroline posed Lucah in the typical Show Photo with Debi acting as the Judge (righthand photo). The actual Show photo appears later.
After Bred-by. After we finished Bred-by showing everyone scattered for the afternoon. Caroline and Debi went shopping for a show outfit that would go good with a Brindle. This is apparently a big problem with Brindle showing. I suggested a pure white pant suit but that idea was rejected for some reason. Ginny went to check out a potential retirement community south of Tucson. Leslie and her older son, Matt, toured the University of Arizona Campus which was near the show site. I stayed at Camp Comstock and dog-sat. I also had a few beers and snacks (and perhaps dozed a little) to help pass the time. I always get stuck with the tough assignments.
Open Fawn Class. The Bitches showed on Saturday. Because of the large number ob Bitches entered in the Open Class it was divided up by color. Lily and Thumper were in the Open Fawn Class of about 10 or 11 Bitches. Debi and Ginny both did an excellent job of handling and the Comstock girls did themselves proud. Lily took third and Thumper got Fourth. Both got ribbons. The lefthand photo shows Caroline and Debi bathing Lily shortly before Showtime. You can see some of the dog Agility equipment in the background.
Best of Breed Class. As noted at the end of the previous web page (Pg. 14), Rio achieved the necessary points to become an AKC Chanpion the week end before the Specialty. This made him elgible to compete in the Best-of-Breed Class which is reserved for Champions. He was the first dog in the ring out of about 50 males. The dogs were presented in groups of eight. He didn't make the initial cut. Rio looked good but is still young and needs some maturing and filling out. A couple of the dogs in his small group of 8 were well established Champions including one previous Westminister winner.
Show Pictures. By cleverly waiting so long to update the web page I was able to include the Official Show photos taken with the Judge and Show Chairperson. One photo required some minor touching up but I'll never tell.
Group Shots. After BOB Class we returned to Camp Comstock for food and drink and to begin packing for the trip home. Prior to leaving we decided to get a group shot of the Comstock Pups. It was while posing these photos that Terry Thomas took a picture from his balcony above our rooms. That was the picture used at the start of this page.
We left Tucson Sunday afternoon and drove to Blyth (making sure we gassed-up on the Arizona side of the Colorado River). After sharing a bottle of wine poolside at our Super8 Motel we headed to the Mexican restaurant we had stumbled upon a few days before. An excellent meal was had by all.
Happy Together Again. Whenever Caroline returns from even a 2 day Dog Show she is very careful about getting Riles and Lucah together again. There is a certain amount of posturing and shoving between the two boys. It may not escalate to a real fight but we don't want to take the chance. So Caroline grabs a handful of treats and makes the boys sit for a treat. She then walks rapidly around the property with the boys following and obeying commands of one sort or another for treats. After about 15 or 20 minutes of this the boys tend to be their old selves and play together with tug toys and then just relax on the front lawn. There isn't a problem between Lucah and Calli except that she won't play with him (or Riles) and that tends to frustrate Lucah. He usually resigns himself to just laying next to his mom (rightmost photo).
Oh! Boy! The Pond. A few days after we got home from the Specialty we let Calli and the boys down into the pasture area (after I cleared out most of the weeds that were taller than our guys). The seasonal pond was still nearly full. Calli came down the path to the pond first while the boys watched from the top of the path (leftmost photo). When they realized there was still water in the pond and their mother was going in they came down the path like a shot (second photo). They all had a great time splashing around and swimming (the pond is about 4 feet deep at one end). Afterward they were filthy and had to be hosed off. Thats why they don't get to play in the pond every day.
The Comstock kids were out winning this past weekend. Lily took Winners Bitch both days and Best of Opposite Sex on Sunday for a total of 3 points--unfortunately just missing the major she needed to finish her championship. Next time. Lucah took Winners Dog and Best of Winners on Sunday to get that elusive second major. Hopefully, those last 6 minor points won't take forever. On Saturday, Leslie and Marilyn came to the show to cheer us on and take pictures for the webmaster. Ron promises to get that page updated soon. We all went for a nice lunch on Saturday after the show--Applebees makes a great spicy Bloody Mary. Since I had a birthday on Friday, Marilyn surprised me with a birthday cake complete with candles (for my real age) and ice cream. We really do know how to have fun at these shows. Winning is extra. :-)
The pictures below were taken by Leslie as Caroline noted above. Leslie commented on how much fun Debi seemed to be having showing Lily.
The photo I like best though is the one Caroline took of Thor sleeping peacefully in front of the TV couch. He is a little slower getting around these days but always comes alive at meal time and still wanders into my office for ear rubs when he hears me at the computer.
For those of you who don't know how he came to be a wonderful part of the Comstock Clan please read a
Tribute to Thor written by my wife about 4 years ago.
Spice celebrated her birthday in her usual high style and wished the rest of the Comstock Clan a "Happy Birthday".
Caroline has been a bit busy so the pup's Birthday Cake was delayed a couple of days. You can see "the boys" and Calli waiting in eager anticipation for their share of the baked hamburger pie with 2 dog biscuits for candles. Chaucer got a slice also.
Sunday was another chance to excel. Lucah was a little sluggish per Caroline as it was quite warm by the time they showed. He looks like he is moving OK in the left photo. Obie showed very well. He was up for the show ring per Marilyn and looked good (right photo). Unfortunately, once again, no points for the Comstock or MGM dogs. Rio also did not win BOB. Sigh! After a nice lunch everyone headed home - with no points, perhaps, but with nice memories of a fun time.
Marilyn and Leslie met us Saturday morning at the show. Marilyn brought Obie and Leslie had Rio and Pearl (MGM Mastiffs). The photo shows the dogs resting outside our RV. From left to right are: Obie, Chaucer, Lucah, Riles, Pearl and Rio.
On Saturday Obie started it off by taking Winners Dog. Rio finished by going Best of Breed. Later in the day Rio competed in the Group ring, but though he showed very well, he didn't make the placement. Debi was at a wedding in Tahoe so didn't show Saturday though she arrived in time to enjoy dinner, wine and bring a great dessert for us. Leslie brought the low-carb wine (honest, not a joke) and Marilyn the potato salad, mayo and mustard (which Caroline forgot) and...some wine. We do have fun. Did I mention Debi's dessert was berries marinated in brandy?
Sunday was even better with Obie going Winners Dog once again (for a w/e total of 4 points), Lucah getting Reserve Winners Dog, Lily taking Winners Bitch and Best of Winners and Rio once again taking Best of Breed. We really didn't leave many ribbons for anyone else. Rio again showed well in Group, but didn't get the nod.
Below is a selection of photos from the show. Going from left to right: Obie and Lucah competing for Winners Dog; Obie having a good time running around the ring with Marilyn; Lily competing for Winners Bitch; Rio competing for Best of Breed; Rio competing in the Working Dog Group (photo by Leslie from her long distance hiding spot) and the last 3 photos are Obie, Rio and Lily posing for their Show Photos.
Speaking of Show photos, Marilyn already received hers for the Sunday show and she scanned and sent it to me so that I could get it up on the web page. So here tis. Obie looks good!
On Friday, Thumper beat out Lily for Winners Bitch for a 4 point Major. Thumper now needed only 4 minor points for her Championship so that it was possible for her to also finish this weekend. I haven't gotten Thumper's Show Picture from Ginny yet but I've included a couple I took ringside. The boys didn't get any points.
On Saturday the best we could do was a Reserve Winners Dog for Lucah. Both Lucah and Obie showed well but the competition was strong, particularly in Obie's Open Class. The two photos on the left are of Obie and the two right photos are Lucah.
We then went back to to the Motor Home and drowned our sorrows in good food and drink. We rented an extra space next to us so that we had plenty of room for everyone to park nearby and allowed us room for the extra X-Pens.
As mentioned previously, Lily took Winners Bitch on Sunday which gave her the Major she needed to finish. Needless to say that Debi was somewhat elated. I've included a couple more pictures of Lily.
Lucah and Obie were once again shut out for points. Rio, being a Champion, showed only in the Best of Breed class. He showed well all 3 days but had stiff competition. We think that next year when he matures and fills out he will be very competitive in the Breed class.
After the group photo of the 6 pups we got a photo of Calli and Lucah & Riles laying together in the backyard. We then all went out front and took turns stacking and working with the various dogs. Calli showed them all how it was done with a beautiful "free stack". Even Riles joined in the fun by letting Debi and Ginny work with him. The right photo shows Caroline stacking Riles while Leslie acts as Judge.
The left photo below shows Caroline, Debi and Leslie waiting ringside with Lucah and Riles. The next 4 photos are of Riles in the ring both moving and being inspected by the Judge. The right photo is of Caroline with Lucah in the Bred-by-Exhibitor Class. Lucah picked up another point towards his AKC Championship with his win and now needs only one minor point to finish.
Thumper wasn’t entered on Saturday so there were no Comstock pups competing in the Bitch classes. In the Best of Breed Class, Rio took BOB, Lily got Best of Opposite (BOS) and, as mentioned above, Lucah took BOW. A very good day.
Saturday afternoon Rio competed in the Working Group against about 25 other BOB winners. He looked good as the left photo shows. He measured up well against the other dogs. He made the cut of six selected for final judging (right photo) but, unfortunately, did not get a group placement. He is still a growing boy and I suspect his turn will come.
In case anyone is wondering (or even noticed) there are no pictures of Rio and Lily in the BOB class. The reason for this is we were short-handed since Marilyn wasn’t able to attend the show with Obie. Caroline was handling Rio, Debi was handling Lily, and Leslie has to stay out of sight of Rio while he is in the ring. So who handled Lucah in the ring is your burning question. Well, it was yours truly, the chief photographer and webmaster. Only my second time in the show ring. At least this time the Judge didn’t say “You’re not a handler, are you?” as in my first appearance. Fortunately, Caroline trained Lucah well so he knew what to do even if I didn’t. Unfortunately, Leslie was able to get a couple of pictures from her hiding place which I feel obligated (pressured is a better word) to include here.
On Sunday, Caroline had high hopes of finishing Lucah. All he needed was one point. The right photo shows them running around the ring. It looks like both Caroline and Lucah are smiling and having a good time. Unfortunately another dog took Winners Dog. Lucah got Reserve Winners Dog but no points. Riles wasn’t entered on Sunday.
Thumper was entered on Sunday. She showed very well and took Winners Bitch and one point. Now all Thumper needs to finish is 3 minor points. In the Breed Class Lily once again took BOS. BOB went to the class dog that beat Lucah. That finished showing for the day so it was time to head back to the RV for lunch. The ladies decided to bring the canopy from the show area intact to provide shade for our lunch table. Much easier than taking it down and then resetting it up. I tried to get a photo of the dogs at the RV (on Saturday) but Lucah wouldn’t turn and face the camera.
About the chocolate fondue. Leslie brought a fondue pot along with chocolate syrup and bananaa, strawberries, and red raspberries. We had intended to have fondue for dessert Saturday night but we ate too much Chinese food (courtesy of out friends, Pat and Jean Mullens) and were so tired (showing is tiring) we all passed on dessert. We got to our place Sunday about 5 PM along with Leslie and Debi. We made a pot of coffee and adhering to the adage “Life is short, eat dessert first!” we pigged out on the chocolate fondue and fruit. It was delicious. Another fun, and successful, weekend of showing.
International Shows are conducted a bit differently than AKC Show. They are limited to about 350 entries. Each dog of a breed is first judged individually against that breeds Standard and a Rating given. A written evaluation of the dog is given to the handler. The dogs of a breed are then judged together in the manner of AKC Shows to determine Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. BOB then continues on to Group, etc. Detailed information on these show can be found on the
International All-Breed Canine Association of America web site.
The top rating given a dog is V1. If a dog can achieve three V1 Ratings from three different Judges from at least two different countries the dog is declared an International Champion. The Antioch event had four shows scheduled over Saturday and Sunday with both American and Foreign Judges. This can get a little confusing at times trying to keep track of which Group is which.
The key thing to be noted is that Rio earned V1 Ratings in each of the three shows he entered from two American Judges and a Swedish Judge therby earning an International Title. This was Leslie’s first time handling Rio in competition and she did an excellent job. She also took BOB in all three shows and went on to take a Group 1 (first place) in the Working Group in the third show. The latter meant that she had to stay until the end of the day to compete in Best in Show but no one seemed to mind.
Thumper also earned another point towards her Championship by taking WB, BOW and BOS on Saturday. She was shown in the Open class by Ginny. Thumper now needs only 2 minor points to finish.
On Sunday we were shut out although both Lucah (in BOB class) and Thumper showed well.
Up north in Yuba City Lily continued her winning ways by taking BOS on Sunday (the only day entered). Debi said that Lily got a good look for BOB and might have gotten it except she moved like a snail around the ring. Since Debi was there alone there was no one to take pictures so I composed an interim picture for the web page until the Official show picture is available.

Thor and Riles. I'm closing out this long and belated update with some photos taken by Caroline last Tuesday night. Thor was asleep in front of my TV couch as usual. Caroline let Riles in the Family room with us. Riles loves Thor but doesn't understand why Thor doesn't react in the usual manner to Riles overtures to play. Thor, being blind, doesn't see Riles dancing around and doing his "play-bows". Thor knows that Riles is near him of course but also senses that Riles is a friend. Finally Riles lies down next to Thor and starts licking Thor's face. Caroline got a couple of good shots of the 2 dogs together including a rare one of me laying on the couch in the background. (The picture of me is whats rare-not the fact that I'm laying on the couch.)
June 3, '04 - Good-Bye Old Friend!
This afternoon we had to say good-by to our beloved Thor. He no longer was able to get up on his own and we sadly decided it was time to let him go. It was 6 years ago this month that we adopted him, one of 4 dogs that came into MCOA Rescue on the same day in Southern California. He was already a senior citizen when he came to us. The veterinary ophthalmologist put his age between 7 and 8 years. He also had advanced PRA and bilateral equatorial cataracts and would soon be blind. We anticipated having him with us only a few short years. He fooled us by living another 6 glorious years. We could not have asked for a better companion. He never missed a meal or acted aggressive with any of our other Mastiffs, including all the Rescues that passed through our house. Maybe he knew just how special he was that he could stay. Though we never knew his lineage, he was a Mastiff through and through We will miss him forever.
June 8, '04 - Happy Birthday Two Year Olds!!!
The Comstock Pups turned two today. Hard to believe. I've included a picture of the pups when they were about 1 week old. They have grown a bit wouldn't you say. We took Lucah, Riles and Chaucer to the vet for a birthday weigh-in. We took momma Calli too. Their weights are below as well as the other pups as info becomes available.
Calli = 182.0 LB.
Riles = 206.0
Lucah = 211.5
Obie = 205.0
Spice =
Princess = 160.0
Thumper = 185.0
Rio =
Maisie =
Lily = 190.0
Chaucer = 180.0
June 10, '04 - A Belated Birthday Celebration.
June 11, '04 - And Still Another Dog Show.
Last weekend Caroline headed north to Dixon (near Sacramento) with Lucah for a 2 day dog show. She was joined by Marilyn with Obi, Debi with Toby (MGM Mastiffs) and Leslie with Rio. Debi did not enter Lily in this show because it was not expected to be a Major and Lily only needs a Major to finish. (Accepted ring etiquette is that you don't enter a dog needing only a Major in a non-Major event since you might take points from a dog needing Minor points.) It turned out that there were enough entries to achieve a Major. When Caroline informed Debi of that by email a few days before the show Debi's response was "expletive deleted". (This is a family web page after all.)
The dogs showed well per Caroline. Leslie took pictures (I was home dog sitting). The far left photo shows Caroline and Debi with Lucah and Toby respectively in the Winners Dog Category (Lucah won his Bred-by class and Toby his 12-18 mo. class). Unfortunately neither dog got even a Reserve Winner. No points! The near left photo is of Caroline with Rio in the Best of Breed class. He didn't win either. A disappointing day to say the least. But the Ladies, troopers that they are, did their best to allay their sadness as the right photo shows. The phrase "You lose you booze" comes to mind. Caroline said that when everyone came to her room for the party Lucah got so excited it was like he was saying Oh boy! Oh Boy! We're having a party! and went around kissing everybody.
Jun. 25, '04 - Another Show (with better results), Chaucer, and Amazing Mystery Dog!
Napa Fairgrounds.
Undaunted by their total shut-out at Dixon, Team Comstock proceeded to Napa for another Dog Show the weekend of June 19/20. We took our motorhome this time as well as our minivan. Three dogs (Lucah, Riles and Chaucer) are a bit much to haul in our RV. Napa is about 260 miles north of us and would normally take abour 5 hours allowing for a leisurely lunch stop along the way. We managed it in just over 7 hours thanks to Friday afternoon bay area traffic (reminded me of why I retired and moved from the L.A. area). By the way, nothing quite gets the adrenalin flowing driving a 34 ft. RV in tight stop & go traffic like realizing you are in the wrong lane as you approach a toll bridge that determines whether you end up in Napa or Sacramento.
Chaucer.
As mentioned above, Chaucer has been staying with us so that Caroline could work with him on Conformation training for the show ring. He looks in good condition and seems to enjoy his morning training sessions. In fact he fusses to be first before Lucah and Riles train.
Chaucer also enjoys swimming and is a very powerful swimmer.
Mystery Dog!
Who is this dog (bitch actually) and what is she doing? Stay tuned for details of an aMaisieing Mastiff!
July 4, '04 - A New Comstock Clan Champion!!!
Today at Seaside Park in Ventura one of the Comstock Clan took a 4 point Major to earn the AKC Champion Title. I'm too tired after unloading the motorhome to provide pictures and details so you will have to wait until tomorrow to find out which one finished.
July 12, '04 - Introducing Int/Am CH Comstock Calli's Tiger Lily, TDI, CGC
Sorry about the delay in this announcement. I realize that my "tomorrow" turned into a week but that was because we were busy getting ready for our second puppy reunion which was held on July 10. More on that "tomorrow". Anyway we are delighted to announce that Lily took Winners Bitch and a Major at Seaside Park in Ventura on July 4 to complete her AKC requirements for the Champion title. We are also very proud of her mom Debi who handled Lily expertly against some very stiff competition. Debi graciously asked Caroline and Marilyn to join her for the Show picture in honor of their help in obtaining Lily's Championship.
The Puppy Reunion.
Last Saturday (July 10) we had our second Comstock Puppy reunion. Four of the puppy owners had conflicts and couldn't attend. The picture on the right shows those that were able to make it. We had fun and certainly ate well. It was a Mexican themed dinner with homemade enchiladas, tamales, various salsas and dips, etc. topped off with a "Killer Chocolate Cake" (OK, I know the last item varied from the theme but it was good!!)
Aug. 17, '04 - Backfill Time.
The blurbs on the Ventura Show and Puppy Reunion above are a bit brief. I had intended to sneak a few extra pictures in when no one was looking and make the page look like it was well planned and orderly. But that would be dishonest (and too much work) so I will just tack on the additional info and photos.
The Ventura Show.
The Dog Show at Seaside Park in Ventura was a three day event concluding on Sunday July 4th. This is one of our favorite shows because of its location near the ocean and corresponding pleasant summer weather. It is also a big show with nearly 3000 entries and about 300 RVs. It was a Major all three days for both Mastiff dogs and bitches and so we had high hopes of finishing Lucah (who needed 4 minor points) and Lily (who just needed a Major win). It was also a chance for Thumper and Obie to get their second Major.
The Puppy Reunion.
The Puppy Reunion mentioned earlier was a lot of fun. We took the various dogs down to our pasture area where they could run and play. Not all at once since we weren't sure how all of the dogs would interact. The left and right pictures are of Obie and Rio respectively.
Aug. 30, ’04 – Riles in the Ring and Chocolate Fondue!!!
What do the above two items have in common? They were wonderful first time experiences this past week end. Yes, Riles finally made it into the show ring under the excellent guidance (and coaxing) of Debi (Lily’s owner). He didn’t win, as his more experienced brother Lucah took Winners Dog and Best of
Winners on Saturday at Santa Barbara. Riles is an impressive looking dog and with more experience will, no doubt, be a contender.
Sep. 9, ’04 – Obie Gets His Second Major!!!
Last weekend Marilyn and Debi showed their dogs at Petaluma. Lily looked good but didn’t win her usual BOS as she has done for most of the shows she’s entered lately. Obie was a little feisty on Saturday, according to Marilyn (we weren’t there to observe), and didn’t place. On Sunday, however, Obie showed very well and took Winners Dog for a three point Major and went on to take Best of Winners and BOS. Obie now needs only 4 points to finish. No pictures because both Marilyn and Debi were in the show ring. When Marilyn gets her Official Show Win picture I will put it up on the web page.
Sep. 23, ’04 – Introducing a New International Champion & His Handler!
Last weekend at an International Show in Antioch, CA, Rio was shown to his International Championship by none other than (drum roll, please) his owner, Leslie. Leslie did a great job as attested to by the pictures below. She was ably assisted by Debi and Caroline in their Team Comstock shirts.
Oct. 11, ’04 – A New Comstock Champion!
This past Saturday, at the Channel Islands Kennel Club Show in Santa Maria, Lucah took Winners Dog and earned the final point needed for his his AKC Champion title. All of his points were earned in the Bred-by-Exhibitor class with Caroline showing him. That achievement, I understand, earns the Caroline/Lucah team a special AKC Certificate.
