This page covers the growth of our puppies starting at about 5 months of age. At this point in time eight of our original 10 pups have been placed. We are keeping two males, Lucah and Riley. We hope to continue following the growth of the placed pups from photos and updates supplied by the pup's families. The photo at the top of the page is of our two pups running around our seasonal pond.
The earlier growth of our pups can be seen on the following links:

Princess. Martha sent a few pictures of Princess (aka Leia) and noted she was a petite 72.1 lb. She looks good but appears she will be a fawn rather than the Apricot we first thought. Caroline calls her a fawnicot like our Tessa. A few excerpts from Martha's email:
I am attaching some photos. One is of them rough housing in the hall with poor Charcoal trying to rest, the other is her "waiting" to be given the okay to munch, and then her new favorite squeaky toy. I will send more later. She is a pistol. It is a riot in obedience. When we finish the down stay, the teacher says "Wake Princess up". That is okay in my book! She is a mudder, and if I had a seasonal pond, she would be there with her mom. I hose feet after we have a potty break, and she is the only one to attack the water. That's my girl.
Lucah & Riley. The two boys are the best of buddies. Whenever they are in their garage pen they usually curl up together to sleep. If they are not sleeping they are usually rough-housing. The right photo is a rare one of them sitting together quietly.
We started taking the pups into our pasture area the last couple of days. They love it. They either find chunks of wood to munch on or go ripping around at full speed. They usually come when called (if not too distracted) and like to follow Caroline around the pond.
Caroline usually brings along a few treats for short training sessions on "Come" and "Sit". Sometimes Lucah gets a little "antsy" waiting for his treat.
The pups enjoyed their pasture outing again this morning. There is a small channel leading into the pond which Lucah and Riley leap over as they rip around the pond. I should have entitled the left photo: Leaping Lucah and Rollicking Riley. It is amazing how agile these pups are. When they are not running around they are foraging for acorns under our big Oak tree. Brindles are, obviously, hard to find in the dark. This time of year they are also hard to find in daylight as the right photo shows (or doesn't).
Spice. Today we received a couple of pictures of Spice. She is certainly a pretty girl. Constance labeled the photo on the right "Mom relaxing with the kids". I suspect a more accurate title would be "Mom exhausted trying to keep up with the kids". Below are excerpts from her Nov. 15 email.
79 lbs. and growing!!!! it's just amazing. she looks lean and seems to get taller by the minute. each day is a treasure. training is coming along beautifully. she heels on leash, sits when i stop and does a respectible attempt at "stay". we need to work on this. her "down" has already surpassed our expectations. lily was never good at this command!!! we had a meet and greet with the local ups man today and on thursday after our weekly weigh-in, we visited the police department! we have two friends who work in the paso robles unit and thought it would be good to socialize her with the uniform, etc. she was phenomenal. just took it all in with no problem....very curious about everyone and everything.
Obie is looking good. He is tall and lanky at the moment but when he fills out he is going to be one big dog. The pups all got along and seemed to remember each other. Obie certainly remembered Caroline and gave her a kiss. We couldn't let them run free as there was a busy street nearby. Neither Obie nor Lucah seemed to be bothered by the nearby traffic but Riley was a little nervous. I noticed quite a few cars slowing to look at the pups. One lady even pulled into the parking lot and came over to pet them. They ran right over to her and were very friendly. From the reports we have been getting from our puppy families it appears that all of the pups are very people oriented and dog friendly. Just the kind of temperament you want in a Mastiff.
Obie.I finally remembered to pick up the developed film I took of our visit with Obie and Marilyn in Salinas last weekend. I took my 35mm camera last week also since my Digital Camera only holds 4 MB (my Digital Camera is almost 4 years old which is rather ancient by today's technology standards). I scanned and uploaded a few more pix of Obie (including one with Riley) for your viewing pleasure.
Lucah & Riley. I thought you might like to see what Riley and Lucah looked like with a Dane style ear crop. The pictures on the left give an indication although the left-most photo is a bit blurred due to their rapid movement (don't adjust your set). The two pix at the right show their at-rest ear set. Hard to say which is best.
Spice. Constance sent us an update on Spice yesterday along with a couple of nice photos. As her left photo title states Spice and Rio have accepted each other. The right photo shows Spice's first attempt at climbing on the bed. I guess it is too late to warn them that once Spice is allowed on the bed it may be hard to keep her off. Her mother, Calli, will sneak on the bed whenever she can. We either keep the bedroom door closed or put some bulky item on the bed to keep her off.
I've included some excerpts from Constance's email (the Lily referred to is their previous mastiff who lived to the age of 12):
spice has gone up - literally. she only gained 1.5 lbs. last week, but she looks like she's on stilts! she stands 24-1/4" and weighs 81.5 lbs. fully grown, lily only stood 26". we are in for a big girl! our leash training is coming along very well. she's also doing super off-leash. i found that "stay" doesn't seem to compute, but "wait" does??? oh well...as long as she doesn't move, it's okay by me. she and rio are now inseparable. they play like litter mates and he welcomes her being next to him (see attachment). he seems so happy that he has another "sister". he does seem a bit confounded, however, when we're walking and SHE'S ahead. that's usually where he was and lily was trailing behind! he's never sure whether he should bound after her or what!
In Tessa's honor I would like to include a few of her pictures on this page. The picture on the left shows her in her prime. She was both an American and International Champion. The picture on the near right shows her playing with Calli when Calli was a pup. The picture on the far right shows her curled up with her best buddy Thor in our small office. For those of you who would like to review Tessa's early years, click on Comstock Mastiffs. More recent photos are on our main page COMSTOCK MASTIFFS - 2002.
Tessa had more energy than any Mastiff we have known. Her various nicknames were "Turbo-Tess, "Tess the Tornado" and "Wild Child". Her other endearing name was "Miss Ornery" because she could be very stubborn at times. Actually she was a very lovable companion and both Caroline and I miss her greatly.
Today Marilyn took Obie to visit Debi and Lily for a play session and photo shoot. The pups had a wonderful time playing per Marilyn's email. Both Lily and Obie are looking great as the photos show. Obie weighs 97 lb.
