Phil's Perpetual Blanket Sale
A Division of Continental Consulting
195 Sterling Place Highland NY 12528-2021
New, Used, or Worn-out Reproduction 18th & Early 19th Century
Clothing, Uniforms, and Accoutrements Bought and Sold
(Last Updated 2008/03/07)
Phil's Perpetual Blanket Sale is slowly getting a long overdue facelift. We have been somewhat downsizing the used militaria (due strictly to the lack of availability of used articles) and expanding into other areas over time. Initially we are looking into hand blown green glass bottles and pewter cups. For the most part they will be seconds. However, the imperfections will be minor and not something that an active living historian would cause in the initial use. The good news is that these seconds will sell at 25-30% less than their respective first quality item.
We are also experimenting with a very limited line of hand made officer's epaulettes by our proprietor. Unlike the green glass and pewter cups, these will be first quality.
Come and see a small selection of these items at our next road show -- but come by early as the items are expected to sell fast!

Pewter Cups
Tired of drinking your after-hours beverage out of a tin cup? Wish you had something nicer than a polished vessel of over-weight armitale? Why not try one of our pewter cups? They come in 8 oz, 9 oz., and 12oz. sizes in a bright finish (pictured). Design may vary slightly from that pictured (i.e. the 8 oz size we now carry has a slight taper to it). Occasionally we also have some available in a satin finish. None of these cups are first quality (as confirmed by their low price), but are very good seconds that show no more damage than an average living historian would give them in an evening at Dunning's Tavern. Check one out. You will not be disappointed!
Sorry, we currently do not stock the 8 & 9 oz. satin finish variety and only have one left in the satin 12 oz. size

Epaulettes
We here at Continental Consulting came into a quantity of bright gold twisted fringe and some bright gold metallic lace. It seemed logical to want to make some infantry officer's grade epaulettes for re-sale. Our proprietor agreed (since he was going to have to make them), so we are proud to offer them. here.
The epaulettes we sell are meant for regimental company grade (Captain, Lieutenants, and Ensigns) or field grade (Colonels, Lt. Colonels or Majors). Field grade officers wore two and company grade officers, one. In the British Army, they always wore that one on the right shoulder. The Continental Army, near the end of the war, began to have their Subalterns (Lieutenants and Ensigns) wear theirs on the left shoulder.

Scaled for the average to below average sized man. Sold singly. Popular flat knot-design. Designed with under-strap to slide under loop on shoulder of regimental coat. We have two in stock - Both with a navy blue background. One was the prototype, so is not as well made as the other. Consequently, it is a little bit cheaper. Our first-quality scaled-down epaulette is pictured here.
Sold! -- $45.00 & $55.00 ($4.00 S&H)

Scaled for a larger man with wider shoulders. Longer fringe. Popular flat knot-design. Designed with under-strap to slide under loop on shoulder of regimental coat. Specially made by our proprietor. We only have a single company-grade officer's left in stock with a scarlet red background.
Price $75.00 ($7.00 S&H)
Gold Lace Special
We have come into an additional quantity of the 1/2 inch wide gold lace used on the epaulette shown above. It is very delicate and requires a thin needle and light thread to sew it, but as you can see it works rather well. We only have a single 18 yard skein available and it is being sold as one lot.
Price $55.00 ($5.00 S&H)
Colonial Chronicle Baseball/Golf Caps

18th Century Repro Glasswear
We restocked early in 2007 with a nice assortment of "Pirate" bottles and flasks. We had a good run on our inventory during the year, so only a few bottles remain. A detail list is available on request.
A note on our glasswear: Many of you know our source for the bottles we sell is P&B Glassworks in Williamsburg, Va, which was started in 1993 by two former glass blowers from Jamestown. We had hoped to restock from them this fall, but due to the sudden death of founder John Pierce, they have ceased doing business. John was a skilled craftsman and a class act. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Special Message from the Proprietor
Dear Friends,
I had an epiphany a couple of years ago that it was time I begin to downsize the amount of period repro clothing & equipment I have personally accumulated. In the 32 years I have spent doing living history, this accumulation has been pretty significant, even when you factor out the many items I have already passed on to others over the years. There is so much stuff; I do not have the closet and cabinet space to hold it all.
Because the spirit was willing,. but the heart was not, it took many years to begin this process. I have finally made the decision to pass on some of my favorite pieces that I no longer can wear, or have any hope of ever wearing again. Please look at the pictures below to see most of the garments in question. They are not shown to say "Look at me," but are presented by my staff to give you idea on what the garments are and how they fit.
All the garments were made/worn during my most prolific period of the 1980s. They are constructed internally with machined seams, except where noted. All finishing is by my own hand, including top-stitching and button holes. However, the button holes are whipped, and are not made with the more correct knotted design. All garments have ample & roomy pockets done in an appropriate style.
The blue & buff officer's coat I am wearing at John Jay Homestead in Katonah, NY, was sold a couple of years ago. The exquisite yellow-buff breeches of un-ribbed corduroy still exist and are in the same condition pictured. With a double row of hand top stitching, these are probably the nicest pair of breeches I have ever made. Perfect for the officer of fashion, possessing one inch knee buckles.
The top-center picture of me on the "Macy Clipper," during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, shows the white wool vest with B&W pin stripped lining. With finished edges, this is a very nice garment for the officer or sergeant during the early spring or cool summer evenings.
My old friend Brian McCoy and I are doing funny and rude things to Henry Cooke's plume in the bottom-center picture taken at an Old Sturbridge Village Militia Muster in the late 1980s. The blue smock I am wearing is for sale and useful for events from the 1750s up to the 1850's. It is 100% hand stitched, including the seams. I am very proud of it, but have a couple of other larger ones to fall back on. Admittedly it has seen more wear than the other garments, but still as tough as the day it was made, it will easily give many years of service to the buyer.
In the picture of me in the maroon roundabout is about a size 46 and the pumpkin pants have a 42-44 waist. The pants are made of a tough, colorfast linen, but I had to keep piecing them to get the right fit in the inner thigh. (Note the tightness in the thigh that was corrected by this piecing.)
The laced madder wool vest, shown at a special event held at Van Cortlandt Manor, is the finest waistcoat I ever made. All the lace work is entirely by hand. In fact, it helped me win Master Honours for trimming men’s garments from the BAR. Unfortunately, with the impression we were doing, I had limited opportunity to wear it my early days with the 2nd New-York and I out grew it quickly. Now it is only a pipe-dream that I will ever wear it again. Very warm - a great cool weather garment. The piecing in one shoulder is all but invisible.
Finally, I am in the red blanket coat, standing in formation next to my old friend Charles "C.J" Nohai. Another old friend, John Isaksen, is cropped out to CJ's right. We were at the 200th Anniversary of Stirling's Raid on Staten Island, January 13, 1980! I cannot believe I had that much hair or was ever that thin. I have even got a regimental coat and a waistcoat under that thing!
If you look close, you will note that I am sporting two haversacks. I was unit adjutant that year, so I kept all the paperwork separate in a "farby" red and white ticking haversack. I even have a neatly forged eating knife and scabbard slipped into the rear frog of my waistbelt. I still have the knife, though I eventually placed it correctly in my "regular" haversack. (When the unit adopted single waistbelt frogs as a standard, the convenient extra loop was eliminated.)
This picture is a detail from a photo, that I believe was taken by Ingrid Schaaphok.
