By the way, there will be more soon!

San Diego Union Tribune - April 5, 1998

The Rockies' Dante Bichette went 4-for-5 in each of his first two games and was asked what would happen if he could do that every game the rest of the year.  "I'd probably wind up a couple of points behind Tony Gwynn," Bichette figured.

Quotes from the San Diego Union-Tribune - January 21, 1998

"I love baseball.  I love playing here and being a Padre.  I love what I do... One of the things I enjoy most about my career is that I've done it all in one uniform."  - Tony Gwynn

"(Fans) have enjoyed the batting titles and the chase (to 3,000 hits).  I love that people are excited about this thing and me.  And that adds to the excitement for me.  I don't want to finish my career somewhere else."  - Tony Gwynn

"If I could play until I'm 45, I could make a run at (Pete) Rose.  I don't think I can do that, although I've said that the last couple of years and keep coming back because I still want to play."  - Tony Gwynn

"My age has nothing to do with my heart and will and experience."  - Tony Gwynn

"...Tony and only Tony, has the total package.  Great swing.  Great hand-eye coordination.  Amazing ability to adjust in the middle of an at-bat.  He's not fooled very often and when he is, he immediately goes deep into that library in his head and finds the answer.  He's thinking ahead of the pitcher and the defense.  Teams hate that.  You can't defense his knowledge and experience.  You might as well throw pitches down the middle."  - Bruce Bochy
