What is MAMDC?

MAMDC is a group of martial artists online who get together online and in person to chat, work out and generally socialize.

MAMDC stands for Martial Arts Multi-Discipline Conference. We're really just a social club, though.

We don't put-down other martial arts...we just want to meet, discuss differences and have a great time!

Below are a few of us at our get-together in Cherokee, NC.

MAMDC currently encompasses many different martial arts styles, including:

Kuk Sool Won™

Kuk Sool Won is a system of all the traditional Korean Martial Arts including but not limited to throwing techniques, falling principles, acrobatics, forms training, joint locks, pressure point striking, weapons, sparring, grappling, hand striking, leg techniques, body conditioning, specialized breaking, internal and healing studies.

Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do is eclectic yet american. Its roots lie in Bruce Lee's Chinese Gung Fu; however, it evolves and constantly changes. Students must constantly research and develop their own curriculum. The student must find what works best for him or herself. This keeps Jeet Kune Do "alive" and expanding in its breadth.

Its basic concept is to use what works for you:

to blend and to flow
to be bound not by tradition but be free, alive and respond like an echo
having no form is to have all forms

Jeet Kune Do is self expression in martial arts and in your every day life.
You should be yourself because every one's JKD is different according to his/her preference

Jeet Kune Do is not a style or system or a product. An instructor can only point the way; the steps the student takes are his/her own.

Uechi Ryu

Uechi Ryu ("The way of Uechi") is named for Kanbun Uechi. He was born in Okinawa, but spent many years in China studying Kenpo, Chinese medicine and PanGaiNoon ("half-hard, half soft").

Uechi-Ryu is traditional Okinawan self-defense meant for more practical applications rather than tournament competition. It is based upon three animals: the tiger representing strength, the crane representing elegance and grace, and the dragon, representing spirit.

Uechi-Ryu uses strikes to vulnerable targets to defeat foes. It is application oriented and avoids high kicks, spinning techniques, flashy exaggerated blocks, or many jumping techniques, since these leave a fighter vulnerable to attacks and throws. Uechi-Ryu uses soft blocks to redirect the force of an enemy's attack, instead of using karate's more traditional hard blocks. These soft blocks also set up opportunities for counterattacks and throws. Uechi Ryu is a grappeling style and permits the grabbing of legs, arms, etc.. in sparring (something many styles forbid).

Kenpo

American Kenpo founder, Edmund K. Parker (1931-1990)studied Kenpo for many years under both Frank Chow and William K.S. Chow in Hawaii. He was the first individual to bring the art to the United States in 1954. Parker studied Kenpo techniques with a scientific approach analyzing body movement to achieve maximum efficiency, creating a system geared mainly for street self-defense that could be easily adapted to meet the needs of any individual regardless of size and strength. His main focus was teaching principles of movement and not strictly techniques. "Basics" are the core of Kenpo to include: stances, blocks, parries, punches, strikes (open and closed hand strikes), finger techniques, kicks (not used often and are aimed low) and foot maneuvers.

Jukaido

JUKAIDO KENPO BUJUTSU
Ju is a Chinese character meaning several things such as:

1. Pliable
2. Submissive
3. Harmonious
4. Adaptable
5. Yielding
6. Flexible
Kai is a Chinese character meaning several things such as:
1. System
2. Society
Do is a Chinese character meaning several things such as:
1. Way
2. Path
3. To Follow

Jukaido means Flexible System Way

At first glance, the layman would think that it is a judo organization with a fancy name. This is not so, in that Ju Kai Do is a flexible style that is adaptable. It combines and unifies Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Okinawan and South East Asian fighting systems of throwing, locks, holds, kicking, punching, rolling, jumping, ground work, weapons etc. These techniques are hard, soft, line and circle, but must be practical, proven, effective and highly skillful nature for self defense and combat.

Tae Kwon Do

As it is literally translated from Korean, Tae
means "to kick" or "to strike with the foot," Kwon means"fist" or "to strike with the hand," and Do means "discipline" or "art." Taken together, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of kicking and punching"--"the art of unarmed combat." Modern day Tae Kwon Do, as it has come to be developed over the years, is a unique martial art incorporating both the quick, straight-line movements that characterize the various Japanese systems and the flowing circular movements of most Chinese styles. But what truly distinguishes Tae Kwon Do is its varied and uniquely powerful kicking techniques. It is this prominent use of leg and kicking techniques that sets Tae Kwon Do apart from all other martial arts systems.

Tang Soo Do

The modern martial art of Tang Soo Do is more than 50 years old. It began when Grand Master Hwang Kee began teaching it in Seoul, Korea in the fall of 1945. He mastered Soo Bahk Do and Tae Kyun by the age of 22. In 1936, Master Kee traveled to northern China where he encountered a Chinese variation of martial artistry called the 'Tang Method. He studied the 'Tang Method of Kung Fu from 1935 - 1945 and combined it with Soo Bahk Do to develop what he would call Tang Soo Do. He also incorporated some of the foot techniques of Tae Kyun into Tang Soo Do. Modern Tang Soo Do derives its hardness from Soo Bahk Do and its softness from northern Chinese Kung Fu. Grand Master Kee said that his art is 60% Soo Bahk Do, 30% northern Chinese Kung Fu, and 10% southern Chinese Kung Fu.

Judo

Judo was founded by Professor Jigoro Kano in 1882. He had studied Jujitsu for many years and he saw something more in Jujitsu than to kill and maim. He devised his own system, called Judo - The Gentle Way.
Judo was founded on the following two principles:Seinoyoku Senyo (Best Use of Energy) and Jita Kyoshi (Prosperity).
Judo can be practiced at any age, from the very young to the very old player.
It is not just a game, Judo is a Way of Life.
Judo became an Olympic sport for the first time in 1964 and is practiced the world over!

Hapkido

Hap Ki Do techniques include kicks, strikes, throws, grasps, and weapons with all movements aimed at an opponents pressure points, joints, and other vital regions. Techniques often use soft circular motions and avoid confronting power, making Hap Ki Do known as the gentle martial art. The breathing techniques and soft circular motions learned in Hap Ki Do train you for defense and life. In Hap Ki Do one learns about Yoo Won Whah. Yoo is a mountain stream flowing naturally; Won the opponent's power and my power put together; Whah, the two above put together. This is what Hap Ki Do means. Your opponent attacks you, you accept the attack, redirect it and counter attack.

One of the most difficult elements to develop is the power over the mind. It is an integral part of Hap Ki Do training called Ki Cho Jjah Gi development. It is the concept that all things in nature have power and one can tap into the power of nature. Plants responding to music and superhuman feats of strength and speed are cited as examples of nature's Ki. Ki development requires the pinpoint focusing of mental balance, self control, self confidence, and concentration

Isshin-ryu

Isshin-ryu Karate Do is the brain child of Okinawan Master Tatsuo Shimabuku. It conbines kata of Shorin Ryu and Goju Ryu along with Master Shimbuku's innovations. The style features vertical punches (with the thumb "stakes"), blocks supported by both bones of the arm, and short natural stances. The system includes kobudo, using the bo, sai, and tonfa.

It has been described as "dim mak on steriods".
