"I find the intuition of actors very powerful - the human face is the most beautiful thing of all." ... Pat O'Connor (director), in an interview discussing A Month in the Country "I stared at him. His face was marvelously expressive, more expressive than the face of any man I knew." From Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres. Ginny, thinking about Jess (played by Jessica Lange and Colin Firth in the film.) Snappies from the film, A Thousand Acres.
From an review by Jeff Huston "In particular, the Bridget/Darcy angle is impressively evolved. Though not given near the amount of screen time as the Bridget/Cleaver thread, Zellweger and Firth create this soft, intense chemistry that makes us believe one little conversation (guided by cunningly crafted dialogue) can turn their emotions (and ours) on a dime. In most films this relationship would be disgustingly instantaneous, but here it is entirely natural. The entire film basks in magic, showcasing a creative synergy between script, cast, and director that is to be coveted." from an interview with Helen Fielding and Sharon Maguire, by Clare Whipps Firth himself was the basis Fielding used for the Mark Darcy character from the beginning, and both Fielding and director Maguire admit that without Firth on board there might not have been a movie. "There was no second choice." from the AOL review of Bridget Jones's Diary by John Marriott

From the N.Y. Times review of My Life So Far: Firth's deep, quietly tempestuous performance portrays Edward as both a caring father who delights in being a heroic role model for Fraser, and a petulant, self-absorbed visionary. - Stephen Holden From IF Magazine review of My Life so Far What keeps the film sturdy on its own two feet, along with the exquisite scenery, are the performances. Firth, in particular, as the wildly eccentric father who has a knack for inventing completely worthless products, i.e. a chimney that blows the smoke underground and a tire-tube with pedals and handles, is superb. Firth is subtle and assured as a man trying to break free from the rich family he married into and be distinct and resourceful on his own. |
