Here are the profiles of the characters in the game

Cloud Strife

A mercenary who once was an elite soldier in the employ of Shinra Company. On his own, he roamed the land, finding work as he went and eventually being hired by Avalanche, the rebel organization against Shinra's rule. Although reluctant to become involved, Cloud soon becomes embroiled in a desperate battle for the preservation of the planet. His oversized double handed sword is used to cleave enemies with brute force.
The broodiness of this character could mean Cloud will be forced into shouldering fate he didn't want in the same manner as Julionir of FFII and Cecil of FFIV. Could this then mean that FFVII will be a scenario type RPG that places emphasis on the overall story like the even-numbered titles in the series?

Barett Wallace

Job: Avalanche leader

The leader of Avalanche, the rebel group fighting the planet's domination by Shinra Company, the monopolistic power firm that controls energy generated by mystic powerplants that are sucking the very life out of the planet. His right arm is fitted with a special prosthetic gun unit that is all over brute power ands little finesse. He is simple in outlook with everything defined in black and white.
He is a widower, having lost his wife in a tragic incident, and lives with his daughter Marin.
An important figure who acts as foil to the hero. In battle, his role appears to be the lead man to lay frontal attacks and absorb the most punishment. It appears his role is like that of Josef from FFII, Yan from FFIV or Mash of FFVI. Barett's straightforward personality should make him a solid anchor to give sense and purpose to the hero's quest.

Tifa Lockhart

A positive and upbeat young woman who lifts the morale of her comrades. Despite her stunning good looks, this lady is an aggressive and tough customer who can slug it out with the best. She is also one of the key members of Avalanche. As a childhood friend of Cloud, she harbors romantic feelings for him but has been unable to express them yet.
A character with the sort of friendliness that could upstage the heroine. As the most glamorous of the female characters, she may attract a legion of male fans.

Aerith Gainsbourg

A beautiful young woman with a strangely spiritual atmosphere. A flower seller working the streets of Midgard, she unintentionally becomes involved with Cloud and his rogue band. She appears to have magical abilities including cure spells. It would be interesting to see what kinds of romantic entanglements will emerge in the game especially with Cloud.
Perhaps the heroine in the game, Aerith's cure spells will make her indispensable in battles. By making her one year older than Cloud, the scenario writers appear to have laid interesting subplots that enrich the story.

Red XIII

Just as the name says, a ferocious beast with flaming red fur. However, in spite of its wild appearance, its intelligence is said to be at least equal to human intellect. Given its vicious claws and teeth, this animal looks suited to in-close fighting, but it is otherwise shrouded in mystery. Even the origins of its name is totally unknown.
A character that appears to play an extremely role in the story's development. But we're guessing here as Square isn't saying. Perhaps it will become one of the summon beasts.

Cait Sith

Weapons: Megaphone (tin horn)
Height: 100 cm

Blood type: ?

A magical cat that is always seen perched atop the head of a fat mogli doll it brought to life. Using its megaphone, this character controls the living doll to launch goofball attacks. Although it has little physical power, it uses a slot machine for triggering a variety of odd attacks (kind of like FFVI's Setzer).
Its hobby is fortune-telling, but like its personality, the results can't be trusted.
A goofball mascot that takes after moglins and the yeti from FFVI. It looks like this character will take credit for all the laughs. Should be the most interesting character in battles.

Cid Highwind

Job: Pilot

Birth date: Feb. 22
Blood type: B

A foul mouthed but kind pilot who has never lost his dreams. As an expert pilot, Cid can drive most anything be they planes or boats. He is convinced one day he will be flying into space.
This is the sixth flight engineer/pilot Cid in the series since FFII. This time around, he's not the decidedly old Cids of the past, but he's still your basic grease monkey flight jockey as always.

Yuffie Kisaragi

Job: Materia hunter (Kunoichi)

Weapons: Knives, boomerangs, origami (used as throwing daggers)
Height: 160 cm
Birth date: Nov. 20
Blood type: A

Although a direct descendant of an extremely tradition-bound ninja clan, she herself obviously has little concern for conventions as evident from her outfit. She forcibly joins Cloud's band of rebels to use them for obtaining a yet-undescribed object. She is sly and utterly self-centered, but her huge shuriken throwing star and her ninjutsu techniques should make her useful.
As the youngest of the announced members, it may well be that she will cause a lot of turmoil with her childish and conniving ways. Her job description, materia hunter, is intriguing. So far, Square is only willing to reveal that materia is a system that affects the abilities of characters such as magic and special techniques. Perhaps they re similar to the esper stones that were used to summon guardian monsters in FFVI. As materia appears to affect the abilities of not only Yuffie but everyone else, how this character fits into the story is very intriguing.

Vincent Valentine

A mysterious figure with brooding good looks and a dark, nihilistic atmosphere. His involvement with Cloud appears to have something to do with Shinra Company. Although he does not cut a particularly imposing figure, his body is said to harbor horrifying abilities.
Vincent appears to be the hero's rival as a source of conflict and tension to make the story more taut. It may be that he will play the part of characters such as Edge of FFIV and Shadow of VI.

Sephiros

The most powerful soldier known in the world, and was the leader of Shinra Company's Public Maintenance and Order Force. Everyone looked up to him as a hero, carrying with him the Masamune, a heavy long sword which no one except him can carry and also having great knowledge of high level magics.
His past is kept in the top secret files of Shinra Company, and only President Shinra and a limited people can access these files. Five years ago, he has disappeared during the investigation in Nibulheim old-type reactor. The media released the information as death upon accident. The origin of Sephiros is directly tied with the Genova Project, which also deeply involved his parents. The project development leader was his father Professor Ghast, who was also the Head of Science Development Division during that time. The project name Genova is also the name of Sephiros's mother.
This character eventually will be in your party while in cloud's memory. He is however controled by the computer AI. He is awfully strong that you don't have to do anything. He will take care the enermy for you.
Will he be your ally, or will he be your worse nightmare?????
