THE BIG HORSE CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
Jenkins County, Georgia Location: intersection of Buttermilk Rd. and Horse
Creek Rd.
Census taken January 13-30, 1998 by L.L. Ketchum
History:
The church was organized by Rev. E.B. Churchill and Joel P. Lovett on Saturday, February 22, 1847. On July 9, 1849 a petition for incorporation was presented to the Superior Court of Screven County (the church was then located in a part of Screven County that is now in Jenkins County).
Descendants of the church forefathers tell how the church got its name. The story--possibly apocryphal--is that during the Civil War, when Gen. Sherman came through the area on his famous March to the Sea, destroying and killing, people in this area hid their horses and cattle in the creek to save them. The creek was heavily brushed and provided protection for the livestock. The creek became known as Big Horse Creek. When the church was organized, because it was almost on the banks of the creek, it was named Big Horse Creek Baptist Church.
This same creek was used to baptize members until the late 1950's. The early years were hard, tough times. There were many years when the pastor was never paid in full for the year. At the close of the War, the church was almost gone, but on July 28, 1864 it was reorganized with fourteen male members and twelve female members. In 1930, tragedy struck--the church burned, and it was not rebuilt until 1931. Modernization came to the church in 1946, when electric lights were installed. In 1947 a metal roof was put on the church. A new church was built in 1952, just a few yards from the old building. Sunday School rooms were added in 1956, and by 1958 the church went to full-time service. A pastorium was completed in June 1972. In addition to other additions and improvements made over the years, stained glass windows were installed in 1995-96.

* According to Kathleen Rabitsch, a life-long area resident and member of the church, the following people are interred in these graves: 5/46 Unknown Dickey 10/145 Carlton Dickey 10/146 Fannie Burke Dickey 10/147 B.J. Dickey 11/173 Bill Dickey 11/175 Ben Dickey 16/290 Walter Cleveland Burke
Taken from a church history compiled by Kathleen Rabitsch for the churchs sesquicentennial.
Presumably this should be 1977, since it is denoted by a funeral home stake.
