Venus On Her Shell

Rendered less than human
By mandatory costumes
That were required in the ballroom
And the salon of the Duchess
At the abandoned exhibition
By the fountains and the modules
And by far the great majority
Unquestioningly complied
Fixed by form and content
And the full sophist illusion
And thus
Were unstandably less than delighted
By the revolutionary spectacle
Of Botticelli's Venus
Remaining naked on her shell

Burdened by accessories
Glove and fan, cane and domino
Martinis and Prozac
And slowed to the crawl of humility
By grandeur of midnight opera
Caped crusaders reconsidered their objectives
And discussed new destinations
Highly disconcerted and lacking for responses
When Botticelli's Venus
Remained naked on her shell

In time the mockingbird chorus
Of scandal would be silenced
And rolling tongues rescripted
With some new preoccupations
Until long hence reactivated
By once and future memoir
But at the crest of prurience
Spurred on by the activators
And cumulative distortion
And societal candy vectors
Remained fatally fixated
By the clearly stated challenge
Beyond all law and sanctity
That was made the time when Venus
Remained naked on her shell
