It was a fairly quiet day at Kylie's apartment. Too quiet. So, she decided to go hang out at the firehouse.
*At least there is always somebody there* she thought.
When she arrived, she was greeted by Janine who was sitting at her desk typing away at some files.
"Hi Kylie!" she shouted.
"Hi" Kylie responded. Then she headed upstairs.
When she got up there, she was greeted by Garrett, who was going downstairs.
"What's up Ky?" he asked.
"Nothing" she replied.
"Well, I'm heading downstairs to help Roland, see ya!" he said as he headed down.
"Bye" Kylie said.
She went to go sit down on the couch.
There she saw Eduardo. Asleep as always.
*Well, so much for that* she thought to herself.
She headed up to the third story to play the piano. She discovered it while she was up there looking for something for Egon a couple of months ago.
When Eduardo was in the middle of a great dream about Kylie, he heard something.
He sat up half asleep, he looked around, yet he saw nothing. He listened more closely. It was coming from somewhere above him. He knew the song. It was one of his favorites, his mom used to play it when he was younger. Whoever was playing it, played it perfectly. Exact timing and everything. *Maybe it is a professional player* he thought and tried to go back to sleep, but couldn't. He was mesmerized by the playing. It stopped after an hour or so.
Kylie came down from upstairs.
"Hey," Eduardo asked "Did you hear that piano?" Kylie froze for a second. She didn't know what to say. Finally she made up a lie.
"No, but it could have been the neighbor next to us, they play a lot." She forced a fake smile.
"Well, whoever it was, they played so beautifully. It really moved me." Eduardo said.
Kylie smiled and thought *if he only knew*.
While Kylie was walking home, she thought about Eduardo and how he heard the piano. Egon was the only person that knew she played the piano. She didn't know why she didn't want to tell Eduardo about it, but she just didn't. *He would probably criticize me, because, I am an "ice queen", and he would say that playing the piano wouldn't be something that I would do* she concluded.
While Eduardo walked home, he thought about that song that played on the piano earlier that day. He loved how that person played, so professionally, so precise, so beautifully. That song was what his mother played on the piano when he was younger. He loved that song, even though he didn't know what the name of it was. *Wait a sec, when Kylie came down the stairs, the music had stopped, and the music had come from above him, could it be her? Nah, it couldn't be* he concluded.
This kept happening over the next few weeks, and every time he asked Kylie where it came from, she kept saying the apartment next to the firehouse. Eduardo thought for a moment one day, *there is no one living there, so it must be Kylie*
A week later, when she was playing the piano, Eduardo snuck upstairs to see if it was really Kylie. What he saw made him take back everything he said about calling Kylie the ice queen.
There she was, sitting there playing her heart out. *She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen, and she plays like an angel* Eduardo thought.
First she played "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven, then "Pachabel's Canon" by Johann Pachabel, after that, "Once Upon the December" from the movie 'Anastasia.' Then last, but not least, the song that made Eduardo remember his mom, "Fur Elise" by Beethoven. He loved how she swayed in time with the music, and how she played it just how his mother played it so long ago.
When Kylie was finished, she heard applause coming from behind her. She turned around, startled. There was Eduardo sitting there in an old chair, giving her a round of applause.
She was at a loss for words, then she said "How long have you been sitting there?"
"Long enough to hear how beautiful you play," he replied.
"Thanks," she said.
"Why didn't you tell anyone you played the piano?" he inquired.
It took her a moment to answer.
"Well, only Egon knew. I discovered the piano was up here when he asked me to get something for him. I asked if I could play it and he said yes. Everybody thought that I was an 'ice queen' and I though if I told you guys that I played the piano, you would laugh at me," she answered.
"Why would I laugh at you? I never said you were an 'ice queen' first of all, and you play so well. It doesn't matter what everybody else thinks of you, and besides, you played a song that my mom used to play for me when I was younger." Eduardo said. "Yeah, what song?" Kylie asked.
"The last one you played," he answered.
"Oh, you mean 'Fur Elise' by Beethoven, it's one of my favorites."
Eduardo smiled at this. He and Kylie actually had something in common.
They went downstairs and sat on the couch, next to each other. After a few minutes, Eduardo spoke. "Have you ever played professionally?" he asked. "Nope, never had time to. When I was younger, my mom paid for lessons, and when I had to go live with my Grandma Rose, she paid for the lessons. After she died, I stopped playing. Then I found the piano up here, and I started to play again. Only when no one else was around. Only Egon knew," she answered.
"Well, you sound professional to me." Eduardo smiled as he replied.
"Thanks, by the way, how did you figure out it was me?" she was curious to know.
"It was easy, when you said that it was the people in the apartment next to firehouse, I thought for a second, there is nobody living in the apartment next to us."
"Ohhh" was all Kylie could say.
"Not only are you beautiful, you play like an angel." Eduardo remarked.
"I...I..don't know what to say," Kylie stuttered.
"Well, say that you'll take a walk with me through the park. It's a lovely day. We can't just sit around all day."
"Sure, I'd love to." Kylie said.
Is that the end? Or rather the beginning?
