The Grand Company of the Peacock

"Ne Vediere Possum"

The Grand Company of the Peacock is a tournament company devoted to recreating tournaments as they were practiced in the late 14th century. We were originally formed to meet a challenge from the Tenans of the Noble Folley. At their first Pas du Roi Rene. It was our original desire simply to get a group of fighters together who would be able to present a coherent 14th century image in costume and armour.

Since that first event we have worked together to create matching harness and accessories and to present ourselves as an example to others of how we feel our Society should look . Our original six fighters and their ladies have blossomed to 18 full members from the states of Illinois and Wisconsin.

We have chosen the emblems of the peacock and the crowned "A" to represent us. We feel that the peacock is a noble beast--full of pride in its appearance and taking great pains to be its best. In the medieval world the peacock represented the church and it's thousand eyes. Called "Pavo" in latin for the sound of its voice, it was a much sought after bird for royal menageries. The crowned "A" is a medieval anagram for "Amor Vincit Omnia" or "Love Conquers All." We believe that the love of the things in which we engage make all goals attainable. Thus the Peacocks bear on their shields a field quartered blue and green bearing a peacock in the first and third and a crowned "A" in the second and fourth. Our motto is "Ne vediere Possum" meaning "We can not see"-- a motto chosen not so much for it's great meaning but rather inspired by the fact that the fighters are nearly blind in their pig-faced bascinets.

We are inspired by the work of other tournament companies. There are several links to these available from Chronique The Journal of Chivalry.
