Wrapperband

The Wrapper Band perform traditional English dance music, mainly from the North West (Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire) with some Yorkshire, Shropshire, Scottish and American thrown in for variety. The band has appeared on TV, at the Beverley Folk Festival, and also appears at premier dance venues such as Poynton, WiggInce, Mythenroyd.

This site has, information on Traditional Composers and Collectors, articles on the Double or 3/2 Hornpipe, and various midi and gif versions of tunes. We have also written a program which can be used to search for the origin or source book for tunes, which is shareware, but is available for free download. There is also links to interesting Traditional Dance music information and more general Saddleworth/North West resourses.

This site contains a number of scored tunes from manuscript sources which you can print and play yourself.

We have also converted some Mod files to Midi for those that can't read music music you can have a listen, these are a bit crude at the moment and, of course, they are no replacement for live music. The Wrapper Band hope to expand the site and will be adding Links, midi and score tunes when we can.

If you've not played a midi before, your browser will ask for an application to play it, e.g. mplayer.exe in Windows, Netscape has npaudio.dll. To get reasonable results you will also need a sound card (at least). Try some of the Links for further info /FAQ etc.

Once the tune starts playing you should be able to return to the browser and carry on surfing!

[ Sample tunes from Ellis Knowles MS. ]
[ The Manchester "Festival" Quadrille - Ellis Knowles 259 ]

The Plain Brown Tune Book is a result of various searches of local libraries, manuscripts and material contributed by band members. Where possible I have included the more unusual or hard to get tunes, in order not to clash with other publications that are available such as the excellent "Northern Frisk" series by Jamie Knowles. The main idea was to collect tunes known to have been played in the area (such as Double Hornpipes), tunes with connections to the North and North West of England for the period 1650-1850 (gleaned through a study of Broad sheet ballads) and to put some of the [ Ellis Knowles manuscript tunes ] into readable format. This was done primarily done to increase the bands knowledge of the music of the 17th 18th and 19th Centuries, but has now grown into this book.

The Ellis Knowles manuscript would to have been compiled in the first half of the 19th Century, probably in Radcliffe, Lancashire England. It is dated on various pages between 1845 - 1848, and is also stamped by Edmund Eddows music shop. As well as Ellis Knowles some of the tunes, in particular a number of classical pieces, are signed by James Knowles Copyist. The manuscript remained with the a fine fiddle until it was rediscovered in Sheffield in 1979.

Although fading now, and therefore difficult to read in places, the tunes were obviously written by a talented, and perhaps classically trained musician in the style of Scott Skinner or [ Neil Gow.]

Scott Skinner was known to have studied in Manchester, as a youth, in the 1850's. It is interesting to note that the unattributed tune "Madame Sylvain" in Skinner's "The Scottish Violinist " appears as "Radford Hornpipe" in the Ellis Knowles manuscript. Another fine tune in a similar vein is [ Ellis Knowles no. 4 ]

As well as a variety of Hornpipes the book contains Jigs, Reels, Polkas, Songs tunes, strathspeys and classical pieces. There is also a large selection of Slip Jigs, so perhaps Strip the Willow was as a popular dance.

The band has a policy of promoting local music and the Ellis Knowles tunes are very interesting from that point of view alone, however we feel that Ellis Knowles has created a document that is of interest to anyone studying English, Irish or Scottish traditional music.

Thanks to Ralph Smethurst for [ Pots and Pans ] a tune named after a local rock formation in the Penines, click on the score and hear a MIDI rendition..

The Wounded Hussar

Wounded Hussar Tune - From Honeyman

[ Play the Wounded Hussar MIDI  ]

From WM. C. Honeyman - The Young Violinist's Tutor and Duet Book. Circa 1913
Described by Honeyman as :-
This quaint and pathetic old melody forms a pleasing and easily mastered exercise for the third position. As this is one of the few tunes formed on the old Caledonian scale which will not bear tinkering according to our modern ideas of the Minor scale, the seventh of the scale, A, is natural throughout, never sharp. The copy here given is taken from a very ancient MS., and I have every reason to believe is correct. The pupil has now to accomplish the feat of descending from the shift without the aid of an open string, rapidly enough to cause no perceptible break in the melody ; and to be able to do so by the wrist, and in a graceful manner. There must be no hasty throwing down of the bow on the string at the last moment; the hair must be placed on the string, allowed to rest there at least for a fraction of a time before it is moved, the first note of a soloist being as important as the first of a public speaker.

From Lesley Nelson - Ancient Music Web Site
"I have a site devoted to Turlough Carolan and the Wounded Hussar is actually his tune - Captain O'Kane.
"The Wounded Hussar" words were later added by Thomas Campbell".
You can compare the tunes by visiting Lesley's Site of  Ancient Music - [ Music of Turlough Carolan ]

"Joseph Kershaw's Manuscript"  By INWAC (In With A Chance), local manuscript published in full.

Joseph Kershaw was a fiddle player who lived in the Oldham / Saddleworth area in the Nineteenth century. Water marks on the paper indicate that the tunes were written down from 1817 onwards. Several "Double" Hornpipes are included, showing that theory that this form of dance music had died out were premature, at least in the North West of England. The Manuscript is currently held at the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.
Local Musicians are (including the Wrapper Band) are keen to revive the "Double" Hornpipe. It is mostly used for sessions and "listening tunes" between dances, however there are also a number of more adventurous callers using them for dances.
