The 2000 - 2001 Campaign
The First Defenders Civil War Round Table will begin active campaigning for the 2000 - 2001 campaign September 12, 2000. Membership renewal is due by November 14th. After that date, new members will be invited from the waiting list to join our ranks.
Here is the tentative Schedule:
Sep 12th, Annual Business Meeting and an Open Discussion on "Union Command at Gettysburg." During the business meeting the membership also voted to donate $100 to both Cross Keys and Brandy Station through the Civil War Preservation Trust. These two donations raised our total donations for preservation work of all kinds to over $3000 since our inception. We also moved our camp to The Golden Oaks Gulf Club in Pricetown.
Oct 10th, Col. Len Fullencamp, "Gettysburg and the Strategic Situation, Spring-Summer 1863." Col. Fullencamp led an interesting discussion about the strategic situation not only in the Eastern Theater but the war in general.
Nov 14th, Mr. David Bastian, "Grant's Canal: The Union Attempt to Bypass Vicksburg." Once again we moved our camp. This time to The Evergreen Country Club. Once again, our membership voted to donate $500 to cedar Mountain. Mr. Bastian, a specialist in river engineering, discussed Farragut's spring campaign of 1862 and his victories at New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Natchez. Then, an overview of Grant's operations and finally the actual operation of constructing Grant's Canal.
Dec 12th, The Annual Christmas Party. This year we were entertained by Melodie A. Young and Evan Walker. Period music and performances were enjoyed by all and of course Christmas Carols ended the evening. During the business meeting, the January meeting was cancelled to facilitate finding a permanent home for the First Defenders CWRT.
Jan 9th, Cancelled, to locate permanent Winter Quarters.
Feb 13th, Dr. Ed Baldrige, "Thaddeus Stevens."
Mar 13th, Mr. Bob Shumann, "The Burning of Chambersburg."
Apr 10th, Dr. Samuel Watson, "How Did West Point Influence the Civil War?"
May 8th, Mr. Bruce Stocking, "An Evening with General Hancock."
