What can we do to help these men of long ago? To memorialize and thank
each one for the sacrifices that they made. The Constitution and Declaration
of Independence formed this country, "A Noble Experiment" in the history
of Mankind. The American Civil War is the defining moment of our great nation.
About 630,000 gave their lives to pursue their dream of what this nation
should become.
What can we do? Get involved! Listed elsewhere on these pages are
a few links to organizations that are doing right now. There
are many more just as noteworthy and local to you. Most will ask for about
a soldiers months pay back then to become a member for a year
now. And you don't even have to get shot at. Some will not charge
a dime, only an opinion. The important thing is to get involved. Though our
opinions may vary, our true goal is the same.
Below are a few other things we can do that can help:
Pennsylvania Memorial License Plate
Dear Friends,
For over a year we have been working towards our goal of establishing a fund
for the preservation and restoration of the Pennsylvania Monuments at Gettysburg.
That has been established through House Resolution 473. Now the real work
begins - how to raise money for the cause. I am launching the "PENNSYLVANIA
GETTYSBURG MONUMENTS PROJECT."
We are asking for outright donations from individuals, groups, and organizations.
Now we have something concrete to offer to all of you - a COMMEMORATIVE LICENSE
PLATE.
All proceeds from the sale of the plates will be used towards preservation
and restoration of Pennsylvania's monuments. Just think if we do a good job
on this other states could follow our lead and every monument could be
restored.
The cost of the plate is $20 plus $4 to cover shipping and handling. The
plate utilizes the same blue and gold colors of a regular plate. It has a
silhouette of the state and inside this silhouette the plate will have the
word "Gettysburg" centered at the top, in the center the phrase "GB (a logo
of the PA Memorial) 1863" at the bottom centered it will say "PA Monuments".
If you send us your regular address we can send you a picture of the plate.
We are taking advanced sales, the plate will be ready in mid-June and will
be available for sale at the 135th Anniversary at Gettysburg and also other
sites throughout the summer. Plates will be sold on a "first come, first
served" basis and additional plates will be made if the order exceeds the
first run.
We do need help in getting the word out about the plate and hope you will
pass it along. Also if you have an organization that would be interested
in selling the plates let me know. All proceeds go to the project - no one
makes any money off of it except for the company that is making the plate
for us.
I hope to hear from all of you in support of this effort.
Sincerely,
Rep. Harry Readshaw
