System Requirements

Adobe's Acrobat Viewer will be necessary for you to view and print these files; this may be downloaded for free from Adobe's web site, and is configurable to work automatically with any modern browser. Even if you have not used it before, you will eventually find the Acrobat viewer necessary for many Web-distributed files, such as government publications, and we believe you will agree that the precise reproduction of the hardcopy typeset page more than offsets the minor inconvenience of installing the product. While PDF files retain graphics and fidelity to typeset layout, they are also searchable as text; refer to the product's help files for further information.

Preprints

Once posted, these items will remain available on our website until the hardcopy issue is published; after that date, they will be in e-moratorium until the "moving wall" age of three years has passed. As preprints, they are not yet assured of final form; authorial revision and editiorial correction may still take place.

[preprint link will be here when active]

Past Issues Archive

Issues of Envoi published three or more years ago are available below (follow the link to the Table of Contents page for item selection). This list will be updated semi-annually as each new issue passes behind the "moving wall" date. Because the issues have been published in hardcopy, only proofreading or style corrections will be made to these items. Should any author wish to submit a revision or other substantial comment as a postscript, it will be presented here along with the original.

We apologize for the incompleteness of this page at this time; some delays in upgrading the source PageMaker files affect availability of these items.

Theory of Electronic Publishing

Like The Medieval Review, we believe that book reviews should be available online. Like JSTOR, we believe that the physical layout of the hardcopy journal, including typefaces, graphics, and all other visual elements, should be reproduced exactly in a platform-independent manner. Like Exemplaria, we believe that online preprints of items in preparation allow a powerful compromise between the academic community's desire for immediate access, and the economic demand that libraries must gain a tangible benefit from their subscription payments--something they might not gain if all of a journal's contents were available online at all times. And, again like JSTOR, we believe that publication of issues of years past by way of a "moving wall" age limit also facilitates the widest distribution of content, along with a preservation of value in the library's hardcopy subscription.
