Gumayas & Hospital Caves
- The Togcha River Gorge
Trip Location: Central Guam Difficulty Level: Easy to Intermediate. Time of trip: 4-5 hours.
This was a great
hike starting on the eastern coast of Guam in the center of the island. A
good landmark is Jeff's Pirate Cove. We hiked up the river along a
faint trial. When the trail ended we jumped into the river and hiked
on up.
The trail is
lush and quite easy to manuver. Jet started out leading along the trial,
once it died he relenquished the job to Dan who took us across the river
and up thru a maze. Once we were well off the main trail we let Bubba
Kev our trailblazer find a path back to the river.
We missed the first set of caves and ended up at the hospital caves that was located close to the bamboo cluster along the river.
The cave was not too deep but was quite impressive. So we
decided to back track and find the Gumayas caves. So we hiked back into the Gorge to look for the them. After scouting the area for a while Jet decided to climb a tree and scout, while he was fooling around Uncle Dan and Kev were busy searching for the cave.
Kev stumbled into an opening and yelled and sure enough it led to the caves.
Theses caves were more impressive and Dan ventured into the cave which was waist high in water to explore the depth of the cave.
It did have some
nice formations within. There was also a second cave to the left of
the one we found that led up inside the Gorge a good 70 or so feet.
Coming out we continued our hike up thru the gorge coming across several little waterfalls.
Eventually we ended up missing our turnoff for the car and hiked couple of miles beyond at which point we decided to begin heading up the hillside.
We ended up several miles from
out car and luckily the friendly neighbors gave us a ride
to the main
road and from there another pick-up gave us a ride to our car.
We sure were thankful to both who showed us the true Guam hospitality.
Another great day and another adventure in the books. There were some great clifflines along the way which Kevin was carefully eyeing for another rockclimbing adventure.
